Electric bill going sky high? What do you do to save money?

I have done many things to lower my electric bill, including building a few solar panels, putting nearly everything on a timer, and installing CFL light bulbs. Can anyone tell me what more I can do? My bill is now half of what it used to be. The money I now save pays my water bill. I look forward to reading your tips!

If you do not already have a programmable thermostat, i would look into that. I have my entire entertaiment system on one power strip. I unplug it when it is not being used. in fact I watch less tv because of it. Close off rooms that you do not use, as long as it is not a bathroom that needs to stay warm to keep pipes from freezing. I use plastic sheeting as an extra layer on my windows during the winter. I keep the thermostat set a little lower, 68, in the winter. I turned down my water heater from the factory setting of 135 to 125. It still gets hot enough at 125 to kill most germs in the dishwasher.

Hello friend, it's brilliant that you did solar panels for yourself, that's half way to the goal. Here our bills are large, for November we have 100$, but it's winter time and i just can't stop the climatic or the radiator in the bedroom. What i can do is to cook in the nights, because here around 10 pm electricity is little cheaper than it in is the days. Also using the laundry machine in the nights is working for us. Our boiler is working in the nights, in the days not so often. We don't have schedule for using the electric machines at home, but also we don't have TV or like that, it's only the fridge, laundry machine, computers, oven, climatic and radiator.

It sounds like you are being smart about your electrical consumption. Unfortunately in America, the heating systems in most houses force us to heat the entire house. I would rather do as you are, and only heat the rooms we use at night. I also like the idea of washing, and cooking when the electricity is cheaper.

You can save also by unplugging the electric appliances that you don't use. If you plan to watch television, then you should also know how to budget the time for watching. If you have your ref on for many hours and yet the fridge is empty or does not have much on stock for veggies and such, then turning it off for quite some time would work. About washing clothes, it is better to minimize using it by not using the dryer if the weather is really sunny. It is also good if you can just rinse the clothes using tap water and a wash basin and wash the clothes on a manual hand wash so that you can skip on using the washing machine just to rinse off the clothes. Hope this ideas help you.

Thank you for your ideas, I will put the tv on schedule to be unplugged when it isn't be watched. The dryer idea is also very good.

hello fixerupper3530 How do make your own solar panels? Is it hard and how big are they and where do you use them? Thanks for the answers. I also use space heaters to save on gas heat. Way to high in Penna. with electrical caps coming off where we will pay more now starting now. There are different providers of electricty that you can call and compare prices too. Thanks and have a great day! Sincerely Unique16

I learned how to make solar panels by watching youtube videos. I placed mine in the backyard to capture the southern sun exposure. They produce enough electricity to run my refrigerator, tv and lighting. You are smart to use the space heaters instead of using the gas to heat the entire house.
