I am actually concerned about the social impact and other effects that religion has on an individual.
In India Religion has many implication whether one likes it or not.In a way it has divided people like no other institution has and has caused havoc, which makes me wonder if we are better off without religion. Or is it just that people do not have the maturity to handle religion and its implications in the right manner?
How does religion effect you as an individual? Do you sometimes feel that you are probably better off without it?Please share your views..

For me religion is very important to make us completely a good people. If people doesn't have religion. It will make the world worse than today because they don't have control to themselves in doing bad...
Religion makes me feel safe and good man. I am a God fearing people and which makes mo not do anything bad my fellow. Because I know doing bad to someone is not a good deeds...
I don't think I feel better without religion. Because as I am found real religion in my life. i feel better and feel safe with tranquility...

Hi aerous,It is an individuals personal decision , as to whether he wants to follow religion or not. Since you are happy and feel confident by being religious it is alright. The only point is that religion should not bring in any negativity into your life - thanks a lot for your response and all the best

Aerous, I was student of sociology and one of my subject was religion. I had to study many religious scriptures including Bible. It does not make any difference as far as I am concerned since it is after all written by human hands. What you say is true Religion is being misused by certain individuals...

Well, you right kiran. It's a right of every person to choose what religion to believe or to join. But people should read first the bible, first to decide what religion really they want to belong...
Religion is good but there are people using religion for their own interest to make it negative outcomes to others...

Religion is very important in our lives. 99 % people don't even know what religion is meant to be for, All they just know is to create fights over it. Ask those fighters if they have ever cared to follow the rules of their religion or lived their life on terms of religion ? I am sure nobody will have any correct answer other than dogmatic explanations or defensive replies. Religions are the base given to human being to reach the ultimate reality or self-realisation or say a path to workship god. If you honestly study all religions you will come to know that all of them lead to one ultimate god that is "Self Realisation or God". But nobody has time to study them and others write of wooden explanations about them being crap or things like this is the teaching or so. Without religion human beings will be like animals, The samskaras which we get in our childhood and all the life from our elders are based on religion, We learn to follow it and reach near god. But how many of you do it with ultimate faith and with total understanding of it ? I am sure none follows his own religion now a days. Saints and gods are above Religion only for one reason :- They have already achieved self-realisation. These religions form the base of workship god and getting self-realisation is not many people know. All they know is to create fight on religions keeping aside the main teaching and goals of relgions. See There is a broad difference between "CASTE and RELIGIONS". Castes were created by humans and religions by gods, the aim of later being to establish a base so that a human can walk on that path all his life, follow it, achieve self-realisation. It is only for human beings that there are religions, you will always find saints or yogis living above religions because they have achieved the self-realisation and do not need to get into any garb of religion to guide themselves through a path. They will always preach all religions and regard them as one way to reach the ultimate reality and will even have disciples of all religions simply for one reason that they have reached the high state of self-realisations and religions do not matter for them after that. But to reach that state you need one base or a path which is religion and he who follows it properly will one-day realize its real meaning.

Hi moneyspinner, thanks a lot for your detailed response However, I differ in many views since I dont believe either in God, at least the so called God we humans depict in our daily lives and never in Religion since it has been proved that religion was an institution created by man to cater to his needs mainly to guide and make man follow the right path. One can put forth many arguments either way, but what is far more important is being sensitive to others needs and being humane. This is something that is inherent and has to be cultivated with or without God and Religion...all the best

Yes as you say these are personal issues and religion itself is a matter of personal choice. Whether one believe in it or not is wholly a personal matter. In fact many argue that it is only when you reach very high degree of thinking that you realise the shallowness of the entire concept. But I am sure there are many arguments for and against it . However, each one to his own, and it is best not to be judgmental

Well Not believing that micro-organisms or bacteria are not there does not mean they do not exists, You need a strong glass and magnify your vision to see them, Same way to see god you need to delve much deeper in meditation to achieve self-realisation, which the yogis Do for 1000 years. Can people who don't even respect religions or are ever ready to fight, be sensitive to other person's feelings or needs ? I don't think so, these are the people who just need a reason to get into controversies. Anyways Things like god and self-realisation are not a matter to be talked in writing or talking, neither will people believe in any damn thing in the world unless they themselves get the shock of life or experience a particular thing :D. All these things are just a matter or personal experience of each person.
Regards Moneyspinner :).

Hi Kiran,
To each his own but I prefer to follow my own path without the guidance of an organized religion. I do feel that it divides people or rather people let it divide them. Religion should be a personal spiritual journey. Unfortunately for all to many it is not. It is their excuse to be right and everyone that doesn't believe as they do is wrong. All religions have people that are like that in them and some more than others. I don't understand it and won't buy into it. So yes, I do think the world would be a better place if there were no religion. You really don't need an organized religion in order to be spiritual and believe in God or Jehova or even no one single God.

Hi Graptopetalum,
I have to first tell you that I see your view on Agnostics as completely opposite from how I see it. Most Agnostic people that I know are more than interested in talking religion with anyone and including and maybe especially those in organized religions. What I've found is that those in organized religions get angry and frustrated when they can't answer the questions of an Agnostic. Agnostics are looking for answers whereas people in organized religions just believe what they have always been told to believe without question. Probably the only thing that I would have a strong stance against that you listed would be murder or child abuse. When it comes to religion...people are free to believe what they want to believe. I know what I believe and until I can prove to someone that I'm right in my belief then I'm willing to accept the possibility that I could be wrong. My mind is open to the possibilities that I could be wrong where as organized religions are not open to that possibility. They believe what they believe and want others to believe it but yet they can't convince me that their belief is better than mine. I don't even try to get them to believe as I do. I just challenge them to prove me wrong .

Surely everybody believes that their beliefs are right. If they didn't, they'd believe something else. OK, there are issues where you probably don't have a strong opinion about. There are probably some issues where you have very strong opinions and are convinced that any stance other than yours is wrong. Most people strongly believe that murder and child abuse are wrong and will strongly oppose anybody who tries to do them. Atheists are often very strongly opposed to organized religions and become hostile to those who follow them. Agnostics usually don't like thinking about God and morality and get upset when people try to make them do so. It's not just members of organized religions who have strong views and become hostile towards those they don't agree with!

Every society needs something to guide it. People say that they have laws to guide them. So, look at the laws that each country has. They all come from the dominate religion of that society. So, what do you do when you discard religion? You get a society like North Korea where the State is basically the god. The people are kept in line through fear, but the society is dying.
Now look at the different countries in the world. Look at the religions that the Laws came from and the societies that are ruled by these laws. Christian,Hindu,Islamic etc. Which societies would you prefer to be Governed by?

Of course I don't believe that since democracy was in existence even during the time of Vedas and at that time Christianity was not even there. It is not the religion but the system which is based on humanitarian values that has been the base for forming laws...

In a country like India where the population consists of all the major religions in the world it is not possible to have a law based on any one religion. We have a democracy which caters to all religious sentiments.I am sure religion plays a role only in a few islamic countries and catholic nations other than most nations follow a democratic structure of governence. all the best and have a nice day

Hi kiran,
You are absolutely right to put that in India there is nothing like religion that has impact on our day to day life.
Personally religion has no meaning for me, I mean I am not a so much attached to the custom of a particular religion kind of person.
If you are following yours you are welcomed and I am there sitting alongside you. And if any religion demands that I do carry out something on the spot I would not hurt others sentiment by just denying it.
And you can say I am better without it.

krajibg, I'm not sure what you mean by "And if any religion demands that I do carry out something on the spot I would not hurt others sentiment by just denying it." OK if it's a little thing like (un)covering your head in one of their places of worship, fine, I'd probably do it. However it could be killing somebody or doing something that would greatly offend others (e.g. try saying what you think about Mohammad marrying a six year old in front of a mixed Muslim and non-Muslim anti child abuse activists audience and not offending people). What about dressing in a certain way all the time, never doing something you very much like, marrying a certain person. What if a religion, which you don't even agree with, tends to get very angry if you criticize it, even if the criticism is justified. I think in that case you really should say, "You're not the boss of me! I have freedom of speech!" To do otherwise would give that religion the idea that they have the right to censor the media even where they aren't the main religion, which is extremely dangerous.

I don't like religion , people mistake morals for religion , they think the both go hand in hand , it false , religion is taking us backwards , religion is nothing but a bad opinion and the the stupid thing is people are willing to die for their religion , its better to be a person of good morals and compassion than be religious and be ignorant by the same token

Just like mother, home and family, school and society religion is also important for a person to be guided in a proper way. That is an easy way to guide people, specially children. That is a good tool. But some people misuse that.

I don't have much knowledge about religions including my own religion. But I know how to use my religion. For example Tomorrow the churches are celebrating three kings day. So the children dressed like three kings ; go to every houses; collect money and sweets. the sweets will be divided among all the children. But the money will be sent to poor countries. Tomorrow my children also participate in this activity. I am sure my children will get many good things specially helping attitude, work for others, social development etc, This is the way I use my religion. On the other hand if the priest asks me to send my children with him for some purpose I will not send them. That is a mother's concern.

Religion was designed for people who refuse to think for themselves. It has kept them
docile when the fear of God overtakes and can be very vicious when the Devil pushes God aside. On the positive side, religion has made people behaves like Ladies and Gentlemen. On the negative side, religion has made people believe that prayers is the answer to everything. This is hampering development and progress in the world today

Hi Graptopetalum,
It doesn't matter how long it has been around, the fact is God didn't create it.
I don't agree that God argued with anyone or any prophet. When you pray or argue with God, you are talking to yourself. Any answer you hear it is emanating from yourself.

efc872, when was religion 'designed'? There has been organized religion since the beginning of recorded history (about 5000 years ago), probably much longer. Pretty well all religions were either based on older ones or go back so far we can't tell what they were based on (if anything). Judaism goes back to the beginning of recorded history. Christianity is based on Judaism. Islam is based on Christianity, Judaism and Arabian polytheism, possibly with a bit of Zoroastrianism (which seems to have been partly based on Judaism) thrown in. Sikhism is basically a hybrid of Islam and Hinduism (another religion that goes back as far we can tell). Mormonism was based on Christianity but is also an offshoot of Freemasonry (which seems to be partly derived from Judaism and Christianity). I could go on but the point is that I don't think anybody really knows how or why it started.
Many of the Biblical prophets argued with God, they did think for themselves. I think it's important to realize that the Jewish/Christian God DOES allow his followers to question him. Allah is less reasonable, he condemned Satan for refusing to worship man, rather than explaining why.

I don't really like organized religion. Nothing has been such an effective tool for justifying hate and war. I am not a religious person, though I am a very spiritual person. When I was young, I was raised to believe in the Bible and God. I was unable to understand or accept many aspects of life and the world. I have since found my own way and now I am a much better person for it.

I agree that organized religion has it's problems. I don't think it's fair to lump all organized religion in together - you never see a Christian crashing a plane into a building to get 72 virgins!
Nobody's perfect (except Yeshua). Therefore any group of people is going to be imperfect.
However, without organized religion, who's to say, "This is right and that is wrong!"? Organized religion has the power to get lots of people together, gather money, make plans and have large numbers of people implement them. Non-organized religion can do none of these things (I would argue that when, for example, atheists start meeting together and organizing things, they've become an organized religion). Admittedly sometimes organized religions coordinates to bad causes. However it often achieves good things, helps the poor, removes corrupt governments, gets good laws passed, saves the persecuted etc..

I was brought up in a catholic religion environment...but I alway questioned a lot about the impositions that religion put up on us...not to mention all the killing done in name of religion!. Today at 65 I do not believe in religion what so ever...and yes I believe in God...but I refuse to belong to any religion because at the end of the day what religion have done is to divide people into sectors [ believers and not believers][ according to their religion] and I for one don't want any part on it!...religion was created by men [ mostly males] to suit a purpose... and what purpose was that? the one and only...to dominate the weaker class! to keep people in the dark so no one ask any question...a mystery was created about the holy trinity so the ignorants [who had no education at all] had no way of knowing any thing at all! the bible was not written by God it was written by men!and it's not the word of God...it's just the word of some delusional/ detrimental[ I can say more here but I may offend some people][ which I don't care any way] people to suit the needs of the time! hello kiran,
religion cannot save you. i always hear those words and i get to think a lot about it. i have been raised a catholic and always thought and believed that the church bring together the whole family. it teaches humility, sacrifice for the people you love and even to friends, dedication and sharing and others.
my parents try to instill these values to all of us and my siblings and i find that we grew up as better persons if goodness is the subject.
yet, i am not sure if religion would save one from the "fires of hell". i guess it is attitude on everything around us would be the answer. maybe religion cannot save me, but i know my faith in God would.
have a nice day.

Hi Kiran. Well until 2004 I knew that there was a God and have always loved God for everything in my life. But until 2004 I had never heard the true way that Gods word should be taught. I thought all kinds of things that wasn't really taught right. Heck I thought I would fly away and to find out that isn't true. And out of the blue I was pissed at my ex for waking me up at one am and then going back to bed and telling me to wake him up at 4am so he could get ready for work. So I got up and turned on the TV on a preachers show and I couldn't take my eyes off it. This man taught me the right way to study Gods word. http://www.shepherdschapel.com/index.htm Since then I have gotten a divorce and married a good man and we now study everyday of the week with this man. So our lives has made a 360 turn around we now have a lot better life since we really study the true way God wanted HIS word taught. No we couldn't and wouldn't be better off without religion .

I wasn't taught the truth about Gods word I wasn't sure I wanted a mean and hateful God as my guide. I was taught that God was mean but that isn't the truth God is great HE don't get up everyday saying who can I zap today....LOL Since I found the teacher that I am sharing the link too. My life is so full of happiness and love I don't ever want to forget God or HIS promises to all that are willing to believe on HIM. Happiness is one thing but all happiness comes from God. I don't know much about India. I do know that Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism are generally peaceful and tolerant. Christianity claims to be the only true way to know God but generally lives peacefully with other religions. Islam however is inherently violent and intolerant of other religions. It's even intolerant of moderate Muslims. The Koran is full of exhortations to fight and persecute "unbelievers" (non-Muslims) and "hypocrites" (moderate Muslims).

I define religion as the sum of a person's beliefs about the paranormal and morality. Therefore you can't not have a religion you can just have a simple or vague one. It's like somebody who doesn't have blood type antigens still having a blood type (O Rh-ve).
I think what you're objecting to is organized religion. This includes most the things people think of as religions: Christianity, Buddhism etc. However it also includes people who meet in small groups like Wiccans and atheists who meet together and sing songs to praise, er, well, whatever. People who strongly oppose organized religion and organize with each other to do so, are forming their own organized religion! If you organized people to punish those who wanted to follow organized religions and prevent them from meeting together, this would itself be an organized religion, a rather vicious and intolerant from of atheism! This was tried in many communist countries (I think it still goes on in a few, like North Korea, which will probably soon start and loose a nuclear war) and it didn't work well. Therefore trying to get rid of organized religions is probably more trouble than it's worth and you will effectively still have one.
That's before you take God (or Karma, whatever) into account.
I don't know much about India. I suspect most the religious conflict involves Islam. This is the most evil and dangerous of the major religions. The Koran is full of exhortations to fight, and oppress "unbelievers" and even "hypocrites" (moderate Muslims). It's basically at war with the rest of the world (and different Muslim groups are frequently fighting each other), just the rest of the world is in denial about this but that is obviously changing as people learn more about Islam. It seems likely that either Iran will get nuclear weapons soon or be stopped by an attack from the US and/or Israel (apparently the US is refusing to let Israel attack Iran to pressurize it into a "peace deal" with the Palestinians that probably prove disastrous). Wikileaks has revealed that many Muslim countries are asking the US to attack Iran to stop it's nuclear program. Therefore I think the war with Islam will become a lot more obvious very soon.

I agree that even if one wishes one cannot disassociate oneself from religion since you are born into one religion or the other. But later as you grow up, of course you have a choice as to whether you want to lead your life as your religion dictates or not.India has followers from almost all major Religions. They all live harmoniously most of the time.To be fair, majority of the Muslims are peace loving and live like anybody else.it is the politicians s who incite the masses when they get a chance .It is the same with Christians and for that matter with all other religious groups.
The major problem we face is that of Islam terrorists, who are trained by Pakistan based terror groups and sent to India to destroy and kill .Thats where the choice comes for the more religious minded people whether to support these terrorits who call themselves Jihadi's ,in the name of religion or not..

I do not believe in any religion myself, and I feel that the conflicts of religious differences are absolutely abhorrent. The whole "I'm right, you're wrong" mindset is arrogant and absurd. And when it goes even further into the "agree with me or perish" it just becomes ludicrous. I think the characteristic inability to accept that everyone is different and everyone has different beliefs is the core fault of all religion.

I thing your religion is your beliefs about morality and the paranormal. This definition includes Christianity, Buddhism, atheism etc. but excludes football. Religion is actually just a guide for us humans, if we read the bible or the Quran or those other holy books. We can learn stuff from them and apply them in our daily lives. The problem is, some people take religion as a way of living and let it control their lives. Things that are no longer applicable in our day and age being done because of their beliefs.
An example is this, there is a religion that does not allow blood transplant because it is considered impure and dirty. So some people of that religion would rather die of sickness than accept treatment.
It is quite foolish cause they let the religion control them. And the people who made the religion or writing people follow now, have no idea about the modern day. Blood transfusion in the past was impossible and back then blood transfusion were done by blood pacts or blood drinking and so they condemned the act.
So... To me, religion is a guide and should only be treated as a guide and not a way of living. Having religion control your life basically makes you lifeless. And most religions teach about valuing life. Contradiction there right?

Hi SinRealm, I agree completely with your views, I feel the same way as regards religion. If used in a proper manner Religion become a guiding force, but when manipulated by power hungry religious leaders and terrorists who take shelter beneath religion, it becomes a curse to human society ! - thanks a lot for your views, have a nice day

Hi lotterylover, thanks a lot for your views . I am not sure that such advises given by religious or other people would work every time, since they have very little medical knowledge and in my opinion it is best to trust the doctors any day than any one else - all the best and have a nice day

The only religion I know of that forbids blood transfusions is the Jehovah's Witnesses. This was founded in the 1870's so it isn't very ancient for a religion. It's prohibition on blood tranfusions is an interpretation of Biblical teaching which ASFAIK, no other Christian (Jehovah's Witnesses are not generally considered Christians) or Jewish group follows.
I think lotterylover's wife was very lucky, or perhaps God was with her. Well she did say, "No transfusions unless I am going to die," so perhaps the doctors knew she'd survive. In country's with good health care systems, you're probably not going to catch AIDS or anything else nasty from a blood transfusion these days. Elsewhere, it's more of a toss up but the risk of AIDS may be less than the risk of dying of blood loss. Do you want to die now or take decades dying of AIDS (the treatment's got a lot better)?
