I saw a show about this on History channel not long ago. According to the facts stated on the show, only a small portion of the sugar produced here in the United States comes from sugar cane. Most of the sugar produced here is produced from sugar beets. I don't know about sugar production in other parts of the world though...

Sugarcane is not the only source of sugar, there are so many sources as there are many kinds of sugar, sugar can either be simple or complex depending on the molecular chain , glucose is an example of simple sugar, while there is sucrose, fructose (sugar from fruits), lactose from milk , maltose etc... most compounds ending with the suffix ose in chemistry usually refer to sugar

Hello again mukthar,
Two centuries ago, during the Napoleonic wars, England decided a maritime blockade of Europe, so sugar from cane had some difficulties to enter. Scientists work on a lot of plants of fruits able to produce sugar -- maple, grapes... --, and the winner was sugar beet. It is a summary, there is a better history here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_beet
It is the main source of sugar in Europe today.
