Office Politics- I'm a victim

It's been 4 years since I've been working in my current company under the same boss and I have reached nowhere professionally. I'm not saying this because I don't like the job. No, I love the work that I do. It is about the monetary compensation which I expect from my company, the promotions which I should have got in these years.
The company pays me hardly 50% more than it used to 4 years ago. I have not had a single promotion for 3 years when most of my peers have gone 2 levels higher than me.
Its not that I am not good enough. I always am rated amongst the most talented personnels in the company. When I start to think about I can come up with couple of reasons why this happened. Firstly I am too honest. If I do not like any company policy I always blurt it out in front of the management. May be that's why I do not feature in their good books even though I'm good enough.
Secondly the office politics. There are a number of groups in the office , sort of camps. I do not associate myself with any of them. All these groups have at least one person who is in the higher management and so affects some decisions in the favour of the group members. And maybe because I do not have any such reachs that I am not able to grow.
Have any such things happened to you too?
If yes then please tell me if there's a way that I can improve the situation. I am thinking of quitting the company as I think its the only way I can grow.

Hi kingAtul,
Going by what you mention there are two things on the table -
1. As you say - You are too honest - Man this is India and if you want to survive in the corporate world, you have to be tactful and (I know it is not me but you have to be a liar at least not honest when it comes to opposing out the policies of the organization).
2. The Politics would be everywhere and there is no way you can stay unaffected. So try to be good and more restricted to your work.
I avoided many such instances just because I kept changing the companies every 2-3 years. The more you stick to any one they start taking you for granted and again, the growth prospects are not that appealing to me after a few years of stay. I worked as a Trainer - teacher in Computers and knew they would not allow me the Top Posts in any case and I used this to my advantage.

I have been thinking almost on the same lines thesids. I've got to be slightly more diplomatic and without necessarily getting into petty politics, need to steer through to success.
I do normally concentrate only on the work and used to think that it will be noticed and I'll get what I want out of my job. Now since it didn't happen I need to try something else.
I like your approach though. Not sticking to one job for long when you are aware that you won't be given top posts. I personally am a person who doesn't like that many changes, but still I can do something similar to that.

In that case start out with trying to lobbying with your seniors (I never suggest that to anyone) but as you mention that you dont prefer to shift jobs frequently (which is quite correct) there can be this one and who knows it works out right... no harm in trying out a couple of times before thinking - this is it and I can d no more so shift.
Good Luck

My advice to start looking for another job but do not quit until you have another one. You will find office politics going on in every company. It's an unfortunate part of working.

hello kingatul!
that's a sad situation you're in. Being in HR, i would like to tell you that it's one way to fight for your right or voicing your opinion on matters that matters to you. However, the way you express your opinion and the words and tone you use would affect the overall impact of your whole presentation. No matter how good or competent you are in your work, if you are viewed as someone who will make potential trouble for days to come, you would surely be ran over in promotions. No management would like to promote someone whom they view as a possible threat to the peace and order of the company. So, i think it would be better if you would review the tactics you have used in expressing your opinions.
Secondly, office politics or politics abound wherever you may go. It cannot be avoided and it is best if you will learn how to dance your way around it, if you don't want to be drawn into its steely claws. You don't have to take sides, you just have to be friendly to everyone, for everyone matters in the long run, in a company. Avoiding either camps puts you in bad light since it seems you are avoiding the very people who belongs to each camps.
Lastly, if you feel that you have sacrificed a lot and is still not getting the promotion you so deserve, then maybe it would be better for you to find alternatives. No use wasting your time and effort on companies who don't really value hard and honest work.

hello deriellevc73, It was good to have an insight from a person from the HR field.
I have noticed that I normally spoil my case by bringing emotions in a practical discussion about the growth. I should be more careful for that.
I am going to have a discussion with the people from higher management about my options and theirs too.
Let's see how it goes.

office politics always plays a part in promotions awarding but i dont think it can keep you in the same position for 4 years-- atleast you should have rosen one step higher if it was entirely about 'politics" the fact that you have about 50% pay rise so far means that your efforst are being recognized but its most likely you arent good in the way you use your honesty to blurt the management....just let them have their way even if you know they are wrong...that way you will rise up the ladder...the fact that you have that payrise already means they wnat to keep you in their company....if you have an grudges with the management then its high time to quit especially if the management is composed by the owners of the company...use your experience to look for greener pastures elsewhere

First of all, I would like to tell you that I admire how you stand by your grounds and how honest you are a person. Not many employees are like you. Sadly though, what you described is the reality in most companies. Though I haven't experienced anything like this before, my sister and a couple of friends have. Office politics is a dirty game. To stay on top, some would suck up to bosses or form camps. And being honest about how you object to some company policy, though this is your right and you should be listened to, would just make you look like you're against the whole group. This is a very sad reality. And what's even sadder is that it's a cycle. Many fall victim to it. Have you tried talking personally to your bosses? I think it's your right to demand something from the company given that you have rendered your services to them for 4 years now. If they listen to you, then good. If not, well, I think you really have to consider looking for another job. It's not because you're not good for the job, it's because the job is not good for you. I can sense that you're destined for greater things. Take a chance. Who knows? Maybe the perfect job has been waiting for you for quite some time now too.

Absolutely right kaycharmedMD. People suck to the bosses to try and reach the top and always be there. And maybe people like me miss out.
I have talked to my boss personally but it seems he doesn't give a damn about my situation. He always gets away saying it is not his job and he has already informed the higher management about my problems and they'll take a call on it.
I guess I'll have to take a chance now. And as you put it may be there's a perfect job which is out there for me.

If you think that you are not getting what you deserve in terms of position wise or financial wise, then quit. Look somewhere where you will grow and where people will see your potential. For as long as somebody from the camp belongs or are close to the higher management, do not expect any promotion because they will pick someone from their camp or group to be in the position before you first even of you deserve it than them. I was a victim of those office politics. My a-hole of a boss schemed on me just for me to get out of job. But he did not succeed as I fought, and his plan backfired on him! hahaha! he deserves it!

Office is a place that can never ever make you happy. Only one day i feel happy in office and that is my salary day. Other days I always consider as war. Because without your knowledge, you will suddenly be trapped in a office politics. So after three years of experience, I feel that if you really want to work in office environment, then you have to mix up with everybody but have to think everybody as present in a war field. And managers can enevr ever be happy!! Thats for sure. Whether you are doing a gr8 job or not!! I dont make frnds in office because i really dont believe that collegues can be very very good frnds. I used to maintain proffessional relations with them. And yes..in three years, my current company is the second company where I am working. I left my first company, because of two reasons. One, I was expecting good hike and second, location was a constraint for me. And I really believe that when you will feel disgusted after reaching office, feel really bored about going to office...its the high time to quit the job. Because everybody is proffessional. So I will say...try to make a switch to another company.
