A dozen witches put a curse on the Romanian officials in charge of the change in law which took effect on January 1. With this they wanted to demonstrate their outrage at being forced to pay tax. The new law is part of the government's drive to collect more revenue and crack down on tax evasion. In the past, the less mainstream professions of witch, astrologer and fortune teller were not included in the list of those who had to pay tax. Under the new law, they must pay 16% income tax and they must contribute to health and pension programmes. If you were one of the officials, would you be afraid of the curse? Do you belive in withces and fortune tellers?

No, I wouldn't be afraid and I think it is a good idea, after all are they not making money on this professions of fortune telling and other things they do? Of course I noticed the word "Romanian" so this is not America. I wonder if an American witch made money if she also has to pay taxes???

You mean that there is a chance that an American witch could not make money? But the Romanian witches earn so much! They have huge houses and expensive cars, this is a proof of their wealth. Of course everybody welcome the new law (oh, well, everybody except the witches ), after all this is a profession like any other, and they must pay taxes as everybody does.

Wow, no I don't know what kind of money witches in America make, but I guess if they made that money, then they should be taxed. Most of the witches I know in America are teenage wiccans, though that might be different I don't know.

so called "palace" - Here's how their houses look. Of course, they look tacky, but can you imagine how much money they must cost!
Maybe people in America are not so gullible like some of the Romanians. I don't know what kind of people would spend their money on witches, but the witches are prosperous here. Here's how their houses look. Of course, they look tacky, but imagine how much money they must cost!

uhh..it is disappointing if they can't turn their face into somebody else. well maybe they can exchange the tax with telling the fortune teller to the officer the officer is free to get it and the witch free to pay tax

I don't know if they can exchange the tax with telling the fortune to the officer, but I'm sure they can exchange the tax with some money in the officer pocket. Corruption is at home here, in my country, so something like this is quite possible.

Why wouldn't they not pay tax? Aren't their occupation a job as any other job? They are paid for their services, and they must pay tax on their revenue, as we all do. Don't worry, they can't turn their face to somebody else, this happens only in movies. You watched too many times the movie Harry Potter. The witches from Europe are not that powerful!

I certainly wouldn't be afraid of the 'curse'. Whoever they are, anyone who earns money ought to be taxed if they earn more than a basic amount. Tax evasion is rife and, in fairness to everyone, needs to be dealt with, however much individuals feel that it's unjust. If one person pays tax and another doesn't, how fair is that? No, I don't believe in witches and fortune tellers. I believe in something MUCH more powerful!

I think though that, if I lived in Romania, I might have a healthy respect for Romanian witches. They are wealthy (apparently) and influential and can no doubt do damage even without their spells. It would probably be not good for ordinary people to get involved.

They wasn't tax dodgers, you know? The law hadn't had any specification for this occupation until this year. I want to see how many of them are going to declare their activities now, that they must pay those tax. I don't think the witches can be a threat in any way, but I may be too naive, I don't know.

I understand from what you say that they weren't tax dodgers. Just that, up till now, a silly law protected them. Of course they are angry - I would be, if I were them! - but fair is fair! I don't think their spells and incantations are any threat but what rich and influential people can do to the government is a far bigger problem.

I have heard and watched this news yesterday and I was surprised that there are still witches existing. I believe what a curse can lead to. A curse still comes from the tongue and it is powerful. One who is cursed must rebuke it right away. Tax officials should not fear though with the curse if they think this is the best for the government. To be positive may perhaps overcome it. Fortune tellers are still spreading in here, but I do not believe them. Many also believes in astrology, but as for me, I do not rely my fate in them. I believe more on what I can do with my destiny and my faith in God.

That is the difference between belief and faith my friend. One may believe something or God in particular, but they have no faith in Him. Because if they do, then they should not rely on their destiny to any thing. Same is through with those practicing witchcraft, fortune telling, astrology, etc, such are not a work of God. Hence, we lack faith when we rely on such. As for me, I may admit that I read my astrology sometimes, but I do not rely on them.

I do read the horoscope sometimes, but only for amusement. Have you noticed how they say similar things to all the stars? I don't believe there's any truth in this. Yet I have a colleague at work who strongly believes in astrology and she always tries to convince us there's truth out there.

Hello maean, I don't believe in fortune tellers, horoscopes and witches either, but there are a lot of people who do believe in such things. I wonder where is their faith in God, as most of the people declare themselves as christians. The church forbid such things as witchcraft. The church says that if they have faith in God , no curse will have any effect in their life. But they choose to go to the witches instead of making their faith in God stronger...

Funny ! For the reputation of the Romanian witches I hope that at least an official had a severe indigestion after new year's Eve dinner . I am living in a Cartesian country : I am quite sure that we began to tax witches the day after we decided to stop burning them . I don't believe in the power of witchcraft, but I believe in the power of fiscal administration .

85% : a plebiscite ! If their spell does not work, they have to run for the next elections in your country, and then they will be able to remove this taxation .

Everybody looks forward for the next elections, but I don't think the witches have any chance to get rid of this taxation. The autorithies are so insatiable when it comes to cash a new tax from the people!

As I said before, the statistics show that 85% from the Romanians would have liked the spell had worked. I wonder why our government hadn't copied witchcraft taxation from yours earlier? Witches had enough time to make a beautiful fortune and I'm sure they will continue to do so, even with the new tax they have to pay.

I don't think I would be afraid of them but more afraid that they would physically try to make their little chants come true. It's like with everything you have crazy psychotics out there who just want to cause damage. I believe God is greater than what they are chanting.

I wouldn't be afraid of their spells either. I don't believe in witchcraft and I can't understand how some people may be so gullible to pay for the witches' services. And they pay quite well, as anybody can see from the witches' wealth.

It seems that some people have strong beliefs and they cannot give up on them, not even in the years of a crisis. If I think more, I also haven't stopped spending money for my hobby, regardless the economical crisis . Maybe this is a hobby for them, too.

Tell me about it.. I told my husband that any job that has to do with what is good like spirit stores, bars, fortune tellers, exotic dancing, etc. makes good money. In this poor economy everyone has money for things like these.

I'm sure the whole world is watching now to see if it worked! We should have a say in how or who is taxed. Government officials should be made to think twice before enacting unpopular legislation.

I would invite the witches to come to Greece. We need a lot of help here too! But they would have to fly on their broomsticks as all other forms of transport are currently on strike!

Don't worry, they have expensive cars to travel to Greece. But I don't know if they know how to drive them, as they wasn't to school for too long. Maybe if you convince some of your fellow citizens to raise funds for this, I'm sure they will come to put a curse on Papandreou and his fellows. But note that they won't do this for free.

You will be surprised to find out that most of the citizens would like the spell to work. The government hasn't been so popular lately, with its attempts to fight the recession. This was one of the few laws that was welcomed by everybody (of course, everybody except the witches )
