Are inexpensive store bought reading glasses good enough or should I get prescription glasses?

If you really need glasses you should get your eyes checked and get the prescription glasses I know because I need some desperately but I can not afford it at the moment and I also don't have insurance at the moment either but I did find a pair of great reading glasses at the 99 cent store that I can use until I can get to the eye doctor, maybe you could try that kind of store if you have one in your area or maybe a Wal Mart or something? Well take care and have a good day!

If you're not having any eye problems, and you're just wanting better closeup vision, then cheap reading glasses will probably be fine. They will *not* damage your eyes. That's a myth that a lot of people believe. The most they can do if they're not right for you, is give you a headache. I have prescription reading glasses, and a pair that cost me only a dollar. I keep the cheap ones in the kitchen for reading labels and recipes, and as far as I'm concerned, they're just as good as the expensive glasses. The only difference is that they have cheap frames that aren't too comfortable to wear for very long. And there's also a difference in quality in non-prescription glasses. Mine cost $1.00, but I've seen nicer ones that are about $20.00. The main thing is to find a frame that's comfortable and the right magnification.

First you need an eye test and a prescription. Now if both eyes are the same, store bought glasses might just work for you. BUT! If there is an Axial component, seen as degrees of rotation, then you could make your eyes worse with them. Very few people are lucky enough to have eyesight suitable for these cheap glasses.

Personally I never had any luck with store bought reading glasses. I bought them twice in my life and both times I bought them it didn't work for me. I can't see from far, up close my vision is pretty, but from far my vision sucks. And at the time, my glasses that normally weird were out of commission and it was going to be a week before I got them back, so I decided to go to Walgreens and buy a pair of glasses for the mean time. The first pair I bought, mind you I bought the same number I normally wear with my normal presciption glasses, I wasn't seeing very well, everything was blurry, I bought another on and those give me migranes. Maybe it's just me and not the glasses itself. But I would never spend money on that again.

The first thing for anyone to do if they have an eye problem is to consult an eye doctor so he could prescribe what is best for your condition. Our eyes could be damaged if we self medicate and do not ask the advice of experts in that field.
