Building muscle for the skinny guy?

well many people say that you have to workout till your muscles burn... let it rest for a few days and repeat. i was just wondering if that will work.

Potentially everytime you work out you create small tears in your muscle fibers. When they heal the muscle fibers heal thicker. So obviously the cycle is tear, heal, grow, repeat. Now the thing is it takes 48+ hours for a muscle to heal depending on severity, nutrition, rest and so on.
How you "work" your muscles will also make a difference. Generally using heavy weights will make you bigger and more muscular. Using less weight and more repetitions will give you a more fit trim look.
