Do You Ever Find Yourself Reminiscing About Pets That Are No Longer Around?

This came about when I wrote an article about Thebes, a very special cat that was almost human-like in her behaviour. She understood what we told her and not every cat can do this. There was an awful lot of eye contact as well.
Thebes lived until she was 19. The night before she died was spent in my bed, led next to me until it was time for me to go to work. This was unusual because she hadn't spent the night upstairs for ages, and even navigating the stairs (which weren't carpeted then) took a monumental effort on her part as she was so frail.
A few hours before me and Mum had been discussing "the Needle Man" and the fact that Thebes should be able to go "with dignity" and not subjected to a trip to the vets. He should come to her to the house she loved so much.
All that never happened though, as Thebes died whilst I was at work. "No way was the Needle Man coming to finish me off, I'll do that all by myself thank you!"
Her ashes reside in a lovely, carved wooden box on top of one of my speakers at Mum's house! She is the only cat to be "brought home" so to speak. I don't know why but it felt right to do this.
Anyway, all my cats are special, whether alive or dead and I hope to be re-united with the latter on the Rainbow Bridge!
How about you? Did you once own a cat or a dog that you find yourself thinking about practically every day, even though the animal in question may have been deceased for quite some time?
Yes, they are ONLY cats (or dogs, or whatever) but they are OURS and people who cannot understand how attached we become to them - obviously, have never owned a pet. Only then would they understand.
Thebes died in 2003.

We had a dachhound beagle mix that we got when the kids were quite young. They grew up together. His name was Fred, and we very much enjoyed him and the happiness he brought to our family. He was a graat watchdog, too, and he just loved to run and chase with my son.
He became very ill at age 14, and we had to have him put down.
I was doing some ceramic work at the time, and I found a greenware statue that looked exactly like Fred, so I brought it home, got out a picture of my dear Fred, and painted the markings just like Fred had.
We still have the statue...it sits in my curio cabinet and is treated very gently.

Do you have photos of the curio..and Fred? I'd love to see them if you have. Great story by the way, thanks for sharing.

We never stop loving them my friend. We are privileged to have them in our lives, however long that may be.

When I dug out the photos (that I didn't realise I had with me until I started routing around) that's when I thought back to when they were still around..Thebes, Chloe and Jodie. My Flojo is turning out to be an awesome moggy too. This morning she was virtually sat on my head, preventing me from getting out of bed. It was like wearing one of those Russian fur hats lol.

I've owned dogs since I was a kid and I have a lot of memories of them, some of them sweet and mostly hurtful. I feel sad whenever I think of the dogs I've lost and I also have some bad memories of some of those pets, it hurts while remembering all those circumstances that led to their loss. I feel bad about them until now though they happened several years ago.

I do know what you mean. I cannot help thinking about one cat in particular..Jodie (who had severe arthritis in his legs) and wondering if we could've done more. There's no way of knowing at what age his arthritis set in and by the time we had him looked at he was detiorating practically day by day. My vet was very good though..said all the right things to me. I often think if there is better treatment around for arthritic cats now, which is silly but will help in future if my current cat ever develops it. Currently, she's only 3.

When my sons were growing up, we had a beautiful Newfoundland that we all loved. I think about her every once in a while and remember some of the fun things about her. Years after that, when the boys were grown, my husband and I had a pit bull that we both loved. She was so sweet and gentle and it was heartbreaking when I had to have her put to sleep because she'd become so old and sick. I don't think you ever really forget the pets that you cared about.
