How did facebook become so much very popular?

I always wonder the growth of facebook. Just started in 2004 but it is now in top rank. Many social network already launched before facebook say linkedin, it started in 2003 but not reached fb level.
I read some article about fb, it is running on 50,000 servers, how big this site! Pageviews 600 billions, 300millions users.
Microsoft,oracle,google are giants in the computer software industries. They develop so many softwares, applications etc..etc.. But this Mark Zuckerberg, achieved everything in single website. One of the unbelievable incident in this millenium.
Let us discuss here about facebook, you can update something about fb.

yes i wondered it too.., especially on how he earned the billions of billions of money every year..., well other people says that i should watch the social networking movie..., it is a movie how the developer made the fb...,and his trials in making it..

I think it is probably the structure of the site and its ease of navigation. When building such a site, I believe the owners have seen something that will prove popular with Internet users at the right time. If it comes on-line too soon, bit will flop and too late will be old news. The guy who created Facebook was thinking the right things at the right time and hence his success. I wish I could discover such a formula!

Facebook probably reached critical mass because of online games like FarmVille.
Frankly, I was a long-time member of Facebook even before my friends knew it existed. But I haven't really used it until about four months ago when I started playing FarmVille.
Right now, I'm always online and diligently attending to my virtual farm. But other than FarmVille and Mafia Wars, I'm still not using much of the web services available at Facebook.

I think what makes facebook very popular is it features plus it is really easy to navigate. I like the newsfeed a lot since all I have to do is scroll down and I get updated on what's happening with my friends and relatives' lives. The free games is also one of its best features, not only kids get hooked but also adults. It has also messaging, individual chat, group chat and photo tagging. I think it has almost everything a social networking site should have.

Hi there Mkmaran!
Well, before I had a Facebook account, I was actively using Friendster. I guess what made me choose Facebook is the privacy settings, the applications, and the easy access to your friends' activities. I know that Myspace had the same features before but only few of my friends have Myspace account. I think those three reasons that I stated plus the fact that in Facebook, the site is designed for people to get connected with people that they already know.

I don't really know, but maybe facebook became popular because it's easier to communicate on there and maybe the word got spread around well by people like my friends told me to got one so I did and ever since than I love facebook because I can communicate with all my friends and even at the same time with the IM feature really does help. Also facebook doesn't freeze for me myspace would freeze a lot and that's why I don't like to go on there. So yeah facebook will be around for more years to come because people keep finding out about through friends or other people.

it is popular because of its features such as wide variety of applications. we can create pages . post anything on our as well as our friends wall. we can share videos, pictures and many other things with our friends. and we can also chat with our friends . it is popular because it have good marketing plan.it become the rave at universities around the world. facebook is so much pleasing because it has a very simple layout that anyone even a eighty year old can easily use.

Well I have thought about this and the answer to me is quite simple I think. It is a simple thing to pass the time on the Internet. To easily stay in touch with fans. To write your thoughts down. I think that is the reason why it has caught on. It is the most absurd, time wasting thing in the world and at first you cannot believe that anything like this could potentially catch on. Yet, it is and Facebook has become a part of our world. For better and for worse.
