The root cause is Satan the Devil, a superhuman wicked spirit creature.
1 John 5:19 (New International Version, ©2010) 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.

tiffnkeat, that's a great post! The number 1 problem is the devil and the demons and as long as they are running free there will never be peace or unity or righteousness on the earth. We believers can have these things in our own lives and we might be an encouragement to others but we need to pray for God to remove the wicked influence.
As you point out, the number 2 problem is man's sinfulness and some people are extremely wicked. They make their father the devil proud. John 8:44 (New International Version, ©2010) "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."
We can be a light in this world and if others love the light they will join us in making the light shine brighter. Let's hope that more and more people will join us.

I agree. This quote, or rather verse, sums it all. In addition, Man's weakness in terms of greed, pride and denial of God is causing all conflicts. Who's heart knows content? It seems more like everyone's heart NO content. I had a poster hanging by my cupboard that aptly says "No God, no peace. Know God, know peace." The problem also lies with man, because there are also disagreement amongst believers. We should all pray for peace to start amongst fellow believers. Then as a body of Christ, go out unto the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Much of it is to do with money making - ie weapons sales - Without the weapon sale many of the conflicts rooted in ideology, religion etc would not progress to the large scale deadly conflicts we are seeing. Unfortunately much of the arms sales are driven by so called legitimate governments such as the US, France, Uk,Russia etc - so don't expect to see an end to it anytime soon ;-( Wikileaks has been a great sourse of information of how governments really work - with hope this my lead to governments realizing their decisions will be scrutinized eventually by the public and may lead to more moral and just decision making (but I'm not holding my breath)

Governments do what they want regardless of what the people want. Where do the governments get their power from?
Luke 4:5-7 (New International Version, ©2010) 5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
So until God himself steps in and takes away the ruling power from the devil and the governments, things will continue to go from bad to worse. Any cry for peace and security will be another sham to mislead people away from God, the only one that can bring peace to the earth.
