With bedtime stories it generally depends upon the child. My 3 year old is in and out about if she wants one or not and I go with her wishes at bedtime about it. I have no wish to make it something she is forced to do.
Maybe you could find some way of separating the girls for bedtime story? Have your husband do a quite activity with the youngest while you read to the elder, perhaps the elder can brush her teeth and get ready for bed first, then while you read Dad can have child number 2 getting ready? Or if they sleep in different rooms just have the both of you switch out every night, one reading to the elder while the other just talks quietly for a couple minutes to the younger. And then the next day just swap places so that both parents get equal bedtime with both girls.

My little ones still have a bit of a gap in-between their ages, so I haven't reached this problem yet. I'd imagine that when I do reach this problem I'll tell them that they can take it in turns to choose the story they want to hear and hope that it settles the issue. Hopefully making the younger sibling feel more engaged will stop them from bothering the older one.

Hi.
I still do. My 3 year old daughter loves it so much when I'm telling her bed time stories. Now that she has a baby sister, I tell stories to the latter ,too which sometimes makes her jealous. What I do is instead of reading it to them I read the story ahead of time and relayed it to them during bed time. In this way, I do not have to hold the book which the baby wants to grab from me everytime I'm reading the story.
They can now both enjoy the storytelling while lying comfortably and contentedly beside me until they both doze off eventually.
