"Black Jesus" Not Allowed on Broadcast TV?

United States
January 9, 2011 2:21pm CST
I was just watching Soul Plane on cable TV. Its a bit explicit, so knowing I'm watching a broadcast channel I knew there were to be some words and scenes cut out. There was a scene where a woman says "Oh My Sweet Black Jesus", and they dubbed it over to say "Judas" instead! Further more, this is supposed to be a "Soul" channel! I don't get why they blocked it. There are many people, including me, that believe that Jesus was black. As Eddie Griffin stated in his standup "Skin of Bronze....hair like sheep's wool." Even though there are people who would disagree, this is still the United States where we can worship what we believe openly without repercussion, right? This just struck me as weird and I had to tell you all. But what do you think? Should a term like this really be bleeped out? Or was it unnecessary to remove this from the movie?

If we truly view this from a geographical point of view, Jesus was middle eastern. He also lived in Egypt for a short period in his life, so he could have gotten a bit dark there. I don't understand either how people can look over this fact, Jesus was middle eastern. Of course, middle eastern is not exactly "Black" but its not "White" either. And it is the US, but its also cable, they have rules and guidelines to follow. I feel no negativity in using that phrase, I see no harm in it. But then again, I'm just one person, but I agree with you, it was unnecessarily removed.

I just believe too much concerning christianity is bleeped. I don't think it should be bleeped. We have a right to our beliefs and speech (not so much anymore). I know there was my boss at my house one day doing business and he offended me by saying I shouldn't have let this black girl come into my house and eat and wait til my daughter got home so she could visit. I told him he was gonna feel very funny if he went and saw Jesus and found He is black. I also told him if he made another remark like that, we would meet elsewhere to finish our workday. Now, I know Jesus is a jew. I know some jewish people. They aren't black, but who knows.

Sammy Davis Jr and Whoopi Goldberg converted to the Jewish religion. They were not born jews. From all historical accounts Jesus was born and raised in Jerusalem to Jewish parents.

Actually Jesus looked like a typical man who lived in Israel at the end of the BC period and the beginning of A.D. before the Jews were scattered among the nations and intermarried among them. There was no six feet high Jews as now, I suppose even King Saul may have been five feet eight when the rest of the Israelites were five feet five. In other words they were not that tall. And their hair was black or dark brown. But it was not Kinky as is common with AFrican Blacks nor did they have the full lips. And the people who knew Jesus did not say "Oh Joseph, Mary, your son has this halo above him and this long red hair, pr he has a much darker skin then you. Are you sure he is really your son?" You seem, much of this Black Jesus or in Europe, auburn haired Jesus has to do with pride. It is like saying, "Our race or ethnic group is more righteous and Jesus speaks to us directly, whereas your race or ethnic group are not worthy of His love." By the way, the ancient Sumerians who are the ancestors of the people had black cujrly hair but they were not Negroes. And curly hair also appears in the White or Caucasian race to. You have to lookl for the whole picture. And being a white lady, I do not want to feel that Jesus just came to save the Negroes and that we had to work harder. By the way, what did Jesus look like? Did he look like he came from the Negro group of the human race? If so, that was wrong. He should have looked like He came from the Middle EAst.

I meant to add the Kuwaits are the descendants of the ancient Sumerians.

Actually saying that Jesus is black would make people who are white believe that Jesus is less likely to listen to them. Now this is wrong, He will listen to those who call on Him, but people do think that way. So in order to discourage people who are not of the correct race, the editor had the adjective 'black' deleted. You are rather upset because you are by your photo African-American. But if I had read it, and not being a self-confident person, had I not been a Christian and known that Jesus is now at the side of God in Heaven, I would have been upset. I would have assumed that the reason Jesus did not answer my prayers was because my skin was not dark enough. Oh did you consider the bronze to meant something like a metalic glow and not like skin color? AFter all, John saw the vision of Christ as a spirit, not as a mortal being.

There was no actual picture of Jesus in the movie, the woman was making an exclamation of how good the individual looked in the magazine. I believe that Jesus was black simply because of what it says in The Bible and what I identify those characteristics to, "Skin of bronze, hair like sheep's wool". But the truth of the matter is, not one of us can definitely say what race Jesus actually was, or even if he existed. It is all according to a particular person's faith. That also wasn't the point of this discussion. No matter what race Jesus was, why would it have to be edited out because one person exclaimed their belief.

Hi drknlvly, There was certainly no need to dub this over except that some white Christians are prejudice towards blacks. We all know the part of the world where Jesus was born and we also know the color of the skin of those who are born and live there. Jesus was no different. If one is a true follower of Christ and his teachings, skin color does not matter.

I think that the censoring of the situation was an utter travesty, and a few other adjectives that you could find to insert over-top of travesty. I do not see what the big deal is with people about Jesus and race. We only know what we've read in the bible, and if those accounts were, for any reason, incorrect... well, let's just say that a LOT of people would be feeling mighty foolish.

That is too bizarre...What difference does it make what color someone imagines him to be? I do not know anything about the station you were watching, but if you say it is "a bit explicit" I assume it was not bleeped because someone used the his name when they should not have.

Well, I dunno if that is the case. A white woman was admiring the picture of a black male model, to say the least. But her response to the picture was to exclaim "Oh my Sweet Black Jesus!" I can't wrap my mind around my mind why that would have to be bleeped out.

Since when is using someone's name a censor-worthy thing? I definitely can't grasp this one either..

Well, if they only bleeped out the "Jesus" part, then it looks to me more like they were worried about saying the name of Jesus and not worried about saying anything about "black" Jesus. If they didn't beep out "black," then it's obviously not a slight to the word "black." Perhaps they didn't want to offend Christians - not by saying "black Jesus," but by using "Jesus" in a vain context. Or maybe they didn't want to offend non-Christians by saying "Jesus" in the first place. It's not logical that they would have a beef with the "black" descriptive but block the noun. As far as debating Jesus' skin tone - I fall more on the side that he didn't exist to begin with, so I find it rather entertaining that people argue about which "race" he belonged to. But as far as the Soul channel - keep and eye on them. Maybe they have a habit of blocking religious references. The name and programming I've seen suggests that it's geared more toward the black community. Perhaps some execs there feel as if "Jesus" would be a slight to the Muslim and non-religious parts of the black community, etc. It's hard to tell about TV sometimes!

I've been watching this channel for a while, and this is the first instance of religious editing I've discovered. They even have some religious programming that shows on the station on Sundays. But I guess this is the same as some people getting offended at the term "Merry Christmas", another one I don't understand. So you don't celebrate Christmas, its not like I'm talking bad about your religion because I wished you Merry Christmas! Same here, if you don't believe in Black Jesus, why should it offend you that I do? Would it offend you if I talked about the Tooth Fairy or the Easter Bunny?

I don't celebrate Christmas, personally, but I've never been offended by someone wishing me to have a Merry Christmas. I equate it as someone giving me a blessing and wishing me good luck and health and a variety of sentiment, not something done with the intent purpose of just peeving me off.

No it shouldn't have been deleted. But I guess they are worried some people might be offended by the truth.

hi drknlvly I think that was silly as Jesus and Judas were miles apart, theyh should not have cut that out at all. Jesus had to have been dark brown skinned really. Yes this in the US and we still can worship as we pleasel. I feel it should not have been removed from the movie at all.Sustituting Judas for Jesus is awful in my eyes. wow.

Yes that bothered me as well. Bad enough you are cutting out "Jesus", but couldn't you have come up with a better name to dub in? Even Homer Simpson runs around talking about "Jebus". I'm sure there was a better way to dub that out if it just had to be dubbed.

I don't think that it should be bleeped out. But I don't think that the reason they did was because the woman was saying Jesus is black. I don't know why they did it; people are just really afraid of offending people these days, and with good reason.

I don't think it should have been bleeped out that was just plain stupid!!That to me sounds like total nonsense!! Why would they do that? Yes we can believe what we want to here and all over the world! Well I would have been like what? If I were to have seen that and thought are they crazy? What's wrong with the person on the television? Well have a good day and God Bless You!!

Jesus would have looked alot like a modern day palestinian I have heard people say that he was black my grandmother in law even has a picture of jesus with dreds most pasestinians have tight curly hair not like an afro but close also it says skin like bronze most africans were completely african not like blacks in america who have white and indian and things like that mixed in giving you different skin tones so bronze wouldn't be a good word to describe that besides why does it make you more comfortable for him to be black?
