OK folks, get the laughing over with!!!
As most of you have heard me say, I purposely live in the Southern US mainly because of the mild, snow-less winters!!! My town averages 2 inches snow per year & I consider that to be 4 inches too much!!! Well last night I went to bed with dry ground & woke up 8-1/2 hours later to 6 inches of snow. 4 hours after getting up I have 8 inches of snow in my yard. When I look at the streets, you can't see where the side of the road even is. To most this is just considered a dusting; but take into account that it has been 22 years since we've had a serious snow. My sleepy little town has only ONE snow plow & they discovered this morning that it doesn't run!!! With the economy like it is, equipment only needed once every 22 years is NOT considered top priority in the budget. Like most storms we've been threatened with that never materialized, we just were NOT prepared!!! It has been 22 years since I've needed snow boots & God only knows which closet they are in the back of!!!! I can tell you that my normal shoes NO way begin to protect 8 inches of feet & legs!!!! I have NO place I need to be today; however, now that I'm stranded inside, I can think of a million & one things I need to do!!! This is driving me crazy (yes it IS possible!!!) & I'm getting that closed in, claustrophobic feeling & I NEED TO GET OUT!!!
OK, I'll quit whining now & just ask, how do you deal with bad weather when it comes your way???

I didn't get out until late this afternoon. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!! I was pulling my hair out. We had ice on top of the snow. We haven't gotten above freezing since the storm. What dripped off the roof of my house only created a sheet of ice just outside my front steps,. The road pretty much cleared itself today & I had run out of milk & bread, so I scooted down to the nearest store while the sun was still out!!! I still couldn't find my boots, so I slid out to my garage & found them in a box out there. I guess my hubby thought I just made up that we had snow & I needed them inside. He was from Oregon & knew what "real" snow is!!! It didn't snow here the whole time we were married & he was anal about getting rid of things we didn't use. I guess I'm just lucky that he didn't throw them away!!! They kept saying on the news that if you have cabin fever to go sledding. First off...I don't own a sled & I couldn't get to the store to buy one!!! Secondly, I'm too freakin old to be out sledding!!! I like my bones attached to each other!!!!
Thanks for checking up on me!!!

I live in the pacific northwest. And although it also snows here, it isn't quite the dusting or dumping that they get out east. So, sometimes we also get the dilemma of not having enough snow plough.
The problem here is getting anywhere. As this is the northern part, people still expect you to come to work even with a few inches of white stuff. And the day after is murderous on the road as you have to deal with black ice.
So how do I deal with it? I just grit my teeth and count the days 'til spring!

My hubby was from Toledo Oregon. I think they have mostly rain there, but he told stories of the snow all around him!!! I have GREAT respect for black ice & I'm counting the seconds until Spring arrives!!!!

Hello Ed...WELCOME TO MYLOT!!!
My car has 4 wheels, but it's NOT a 4-wheel drive vehicle. When the roads are slick enough, it doesn't matter if you have 8 wheels, you can slide off the road & get hurt or somebody not paying attention can slide into you & not only damage your car, but kill you in the process...sometimes it's just NOT worth the risk!!!
My main problem was I didn't have the appropriate boots to go out & be safe. I really didn't want to go out in the cold & snow, yet I was bored staying in!!!!

I see others have helped you out already. We are in Kansas with four to six inches, but no moisture under it so no ice. We have had lots of storms where there was lots of ice and it broke trees and so forth. This is the light stuff that will blow off the trees. I did not go anywhere today, did not need anything. I got my share of cleaning windshields and driving on snow and ice when I drove school buses. I wore my tennies and shoveled or scooped the sidewalks (city ordinance). I had foot surgery last year and my boot still does not fit very well. I am staying inside and eating hot soup, and drinking warm beverages. Be good and do not fall or anything.

well, i am in canada and we have seen our share of snow (no, we dont have it all year, we actually get weather well into the 90's during the summer!) but here in canada, we have major weather flucuations! in some parts the humidex can go as high as 45 (celcius) or the windchill can get as low as -34 (again, celcius) but as for snow, you just deal with it. we dont have a ton at the moment, maybe an inch or so but more is expected today. we just carry on as usual all year round.

I could hear the Canadians & those living in the Dakotas laughing at me whining over a silly 8 inches!!! I do know that it's all relative!!! When I lived further North, I did much like you said & just dealt with it!!! Having no real family to take care of me if I broke something & not having enough money to cover a hospital or nursing home stay, I felt the need to be more careful than I did when I was in my 30s or even 40s. Looking back, I think I was in the midst of a panic attack off & on during the day!!! I'm much better today as I've been more proactive & was fortunate enough to watch some good movies & I found some interesting discussions that have kept me busy today!!! There are days that I don't know what I'd do without myLot!!!!

Hi LadyM,
In the UK we haved had around 15/20 inches of snow in the last two years and we are still NOT prepared f or it, everywhere closes down and not enough gritters and snow ploughs, thank goodness all the snow has gone now and only getting heay rain, but the weather man says we still may have snow later in a few weeks as it is still very cold, please deep warm with not having a proper snow boots, you don't want to slip and fall, so stay in and enjoy the snow from the inside.

I've been inside ALL day today, but I've stayed much more active on myLot. After surviving yesterday & getting a good night's sleep. I realized that I just couldn't go through a similar situation today. I've been lucky today in that there have been numerous good movies on TV & I've made sure to stay active here on the Lot!!! Thank you for your concern!!!!

How about a nice book, a hot chocolate, a nice nap, a slitly boring TV rerun? Of course you can do something really nasty, according to the wheather and take everything out of the closet and clean up and leave it perfect (cleaning the fridge is an alternative). I have been thinking of doing that for some time but the sun is shining here, I´m in Summer so I´d better wait until a Winter day for that..
By the way, Summer is also a nice time for a nap. I think I´ll go do just that now. RElax, love!

I hibernate in Winter. I twell you, LadyMarissa, reruns are the best. They go hand by hand with naps. You put the TV on at a rerun (sometimes you can even get classics which are the worst), lie down under a nice comforter and start thinking on how could you have been hooked to (Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, The Nannie, you name it). You close you eyes for a second and when you open it´s dark outside, you are late for your chores, adrenaline heats you and there you go: no claustrophobia anymore

ME TOO! I can't get off my hill, if I tried I would bust something vital..especially my bum...we had 10 inches of snow last week, this week it is 4 inches and we are supposed to get more. Temperature last night was only 6 degrees but felt colder.. I live in Kentucky and we are always having cold winters full of snow,Ice and whatever else it decides to throw at us. We even had to go 11 days without electricity because of a Ice storm some people had to go up to 2 or more weeks without it but I hated not having it and it made me appreciate it all the more. Snow is fun...if you have kids to get out and play with..but when you need to get places...well..your out of luck awhile. I was supposed to went to the store on the 8th and I haven't gotten there yet..be awhile before I can manage to get off my hill without falling or getting hurt..and with more snow in the forecast...might be a few weeks..lucky me..I always have enough food to do a month in advance..

Poor you! I know just how you feel and I will probably feel that way beginning tomorrow. We're expecting 3-5" of snow which isn't really much but they take their time plowing the residential streets--if I can even get out of my garage! I would park on the street so I can get out but with my luck a car would slide into it.
The stores are quite crowded right now, I just got back from buying everything I'll need for the next week and everyone else had the same thought. People here always stock up when a snow storm is coming, which is smart.
When I am stuck at home for a few days I don't do much differently. I rarely go anywhere, anyway. It's just knowing I can't that drives me nuts!

I just grumble a few naughty words under my breath and trudge on through it.
I know what it's like to have weather you're not used to and I'm not laughing at you, that's for sure! We just had THE most horrible winter I've ever been through my entire life last winter. I grew up in Maryland and moved here to the mountains of Virginia three plus years ago but the weather is pretty much the same... normally we have MAYBE a foot of snow throughout the entire season. We got over eight feet last winter. It was AWFUL!!! We were quite stuck, as you are now. Well, when the snow reached over the bottom of the car doors, that's when you are REALLY stuck. We had to shovel our driveway/parking area, which is about 50-60 feet long before we could try to go any farther. Luckily, we have someone who plows our private road and that was done pretty quickly after each snowstorm. BUT, once you get out, you have to worry about getting a parking spot wherever you're going. Most shopping centers plow the snow up in huge piles here and there around the parking lot and it can cut down on the available spaces by almost half!
Yeah, I feel claustrophobic when we get more snow than normal, too. That and, of course, my mumbling some not so lady-like words. I mumble those words because I know I'm going to have very sore muscles for the next few days because I have to get out there an shovel this stuff.
So, don't feel bad. Your reaction to all that snow is quite normal... for where you live. If you lived up here your whole life and felt this way over 8 inches, I'd have to call you a weenie.

Well, I lived in Maryland & Virginia for about 20 years. The last town was Manassas VA & I was far from a weenie when the bad weather hit. I trudged a mile & a half through 18 inches of snow to get to the local convenience store & never even thought about it. Yes, i cursed ALL the way back home!!! Only difference is I was only 30 then & didn't have problems with Arthritis. I've been away from those kind of conditions for around 30 years now & I just freaked out being stuck in this dayum house today!!! People here have NO clue what a snow plow is used for. I wasn't up to shoveling. It amazes me how lazy the kids are now day. I offered to pay several of the neighbor's children to shovel my drive & they turned me down. The other thing is people here have NO clue how to drive in the snow as they seldom have to. Those that wanted to go out are young enough to think they are invincible & I'm old enough to know I'm NOT!!! If I'm gonna die, I want it to be from something I've done...NOT some young buck having fun & not paying attention!!! With everything closed, they didn't have much to do!!!

Hi my dear friend! I'm not laughing, believe me! Snow is no joke
to me anymore! Even though I live in NY we are also just not
accustomed to 8+ inches of snow, at least not where I live and
not as often as it's been coming! The last storm over Christmas
dropped 19 inches! I can't walk in that! I can't walk too well
in 6 anymore. And now we are yet again "bracing" for another
"dumping" tomorrow night into Wednesday of 6-12 inches! No
more snow! And it is really cold too. I hardly go out anymore
because I can't take the cold and without a car I have to walk
to the bus or walk to the stores and I'm getting to damn old
and breakable for this! Thankfully I have the Internet of I
would go totally insane. I'm ready for Spring!

Thankfully I have the Internet or I would go totally insane. I'm ready for Spring! Oh hell YESSS sister!!!! I did use the plastic bags over my cheapo fur boots to go out & feed the dogs. I was exhausted by the time I got back in!!! My left knee was in such pain from the cold!!! I've NEVER cared for the cold & I despise it for sure now!!!! My town is so small we don't have any public transportation. One guy tried to start a taxi service, but it fell flat!!! There were enough wrecks around here today I didn't feel comfortable enough to drive myself anywhere!!! And if I had, it wouldn't have been open when I got there. A friend's daughter is a waitress at Applebee. They were the ONLY restaurant in town to open today & they closed after what would have been lunchtime due to NO business!!! My friends here that were kind enough to respond to my discussion helped me through one of the toughest days I've had in a while; so I'm indebted to my friends, the internet & myLot!!!!

I can truly sympathize since I lived in MT for bout 8 years :)
Just keep in mind, the same thing happened to us here in Oklahoma last year...
The snow will melt and quickly too. Put a grocery store bag over your shoes with a rubber band if you truly must go out.... and go do as you please..I'm sure the towns are in no better shape tho,so take a few mins. and go find those boots !
God Bless,

Just goes to show what Claustrophobia can do for you!!! I lived 20 years in Washington DC & traveling in snow didn't bother me as I had what I needed to survive with me in my car!!! I have some ankle high boots right in front of me, but I quickly found they were useless in 8 inches of snow as they filled up rapidly. Some good thick socks, those boots & a couple of bags will get me outside where I can get OUT of this house!!! I'm sure my dogs will be glad to see me with their food too!!! You know...that one is so simple, I should have come up with it by now!!!

We have a snow storm coming tomorrow so I suppose I could go out today and do what I need done before tomorrow, but that would not be fun, as I am so comfy sitting home right now. LOL
Where I am at we can get anywhere between 6 - 20 inches and funny how it is on those days I end up outdoors. Yikes!!
The only way to handle it is to stay inside and or go out doors and bear it. I opt for indoors as much as I can.

LadyMarissa-
I feel your pain, where I live we get a good amount of snow, but I still hate it and dread it. I don't leave the house because I am scared to drive in it. Usually will watch funny movies, cook some dinners and some cookies.
Play with my son if he is off of school and sometimes even just get back in bed with a good book to pass the time. Try not to panic and think of being stuck because that will make it worse.

I've hated snow ALL my life!!! As I got older. I just got to where I could deal with it. Being over 20 years since I experienced my last snow storm, I was totally out of practice when this one hit & was totally unprepared...except for food!!! They have warned us of impending snow so many times, it became like the boy who cried wolf...I quit listening!!! When I get paid on Wednesday, you can dayum well believe that I'll be buying a decent paid of snow boots as I'm concerned that they are promising there will be more to come!!! My common sense is saying don't worry about it as every 15-20 years is NO time soon. I can promise that this time i will put the boots so I know where they are for the next storm!!!!
I don't have a child to keep me company so i envy you there. I'm not a big reader, so I lose out there. I do enjoy watching movies, but no good ones came on until late this afternoon!!!

Good books are always a good idea in these sorts of situations. Also hot chocolat or tea is really good too. I live in Canada and alot of times here when it snows it really snows. If we can avoid going out we do but when we can't we like 4x4s. There have been many times when you can not get your vehicle down the alley way for days. Just keep warm.
