The day I learned to drive bicycle

If my memory serves me right I was 10 years old when I learned how to drive a bicycle. But before that, if how many times I fell off a bike I can't recall anymore all I have is the mark of scars on my knees. Have gone through minor crashes before I was able to balanced my body and managed to go back and forth. The first step how to easily learn a bike is to be confident of yourself and the idea about falling and getting hurt must be set aside. Ask any adult to instruct and guide you all through out. Did you had any stories of your first day riding a bike? Have you met an accident out of it?

My first bike was actually a trike. I think I was about 2 years old then. I don't remember riding it though. I only see my red trike in pictures. Then when I was 4, I got my first bike. I was very specific with the one that I want. I wanted a pink bike with a basket in the front. My mother was working in the US back then. When she saw a pink bike with a white basket in the front, she immediately bought it. I immediately learned to ride it because it had training wheels. After a few months though, when I started playing with the older kids in the neighborhood, they thought me how to ride without a training wheel. By that time, my training wheels were getting ruined too so they took it off. When I was 6, my dad bought me a bigger bike. At the time, I thought it was really, really big. After having it for a week, I feel in a heap of sand when I avoided a dog while taking a turn. I got wounded a lot. In my elbows and a big circular wound in my knee that I still have a scar of, and some smaller wounds in my face. What's worse is that in a few days, we were gonna have our graduation picture taken. I was graduating pre-school at the time, which is why my dad gave me a bike as a gift. Hmmm, this discussion actually made me miss riding a bike. :)

Haha. Not really, they just bought me one when I was two. I guess that's why I like riding bikes, since I've been doing it for so long. Every time I see a pink bike with a basket, I still remember that bike. A few months ago, I found out that my mom feels the same when she sees a pink bike. Well, He didn't know that I would fall down, like, right before picture week. It turned out okay though, I still looked good on my picture. :)

Reminiscing? It's really good to bring back the memories of our childhood. I for one, when seeing kids in the streets biking, I just can't help but remember the day I was his age struggling to reach the pedal to move forward. Nice to know it turned out okay and you still looked good on that graduation picture.

WOW! Two years old? Maybe you're too hard headed and persistent that time wanting a bike. LOL! Or your parents are as eager as you are to buy you one, thus at 4 you finally had that pink colored bike with front basket as requested. You are lucky to have them. For that age having our own bike probably the greatest gift we could ever asked to our parents. Although he should have gave it to you after graduation. I knew he realized it the moment he saw those scars in your face and knee.

Yes and I believe I was about eight years old. I took a neighbors bike without permission. I was so determined to learn so I jumped on the ten speed. Since I had never owned a bike I could not learn sooner. So I saw so many do it so many times that I figured it could be so easy. So there I was riding this bike and doing a great job, so I decided to show off and began to yell out to the neighborhood kids look at me, hey look at me. So there I was strolling so fast and paying attention to who was watching me and not to the path in front of me. So I crashed right into the viaduct bridge and landed on my rear. Although all the kids were laughing I began to cry out of pain. I scraped a great deal of skin off my fingers and knees. I pretended to be okay when in fact I wasn't. But I learned to ride a ten speed on the first try. LOL

LOL at the time I laughed along with them as I hid my tears inside from being so hurt. But now I look back and have a grand laugh each time I think about it. As it serves me right for taking the bike without permission.

Pretending to be okay is another thing that I can't just do. Honestly, you're making me laugh thinking how you probably look like at that moment. This can be one of the most unforgettable experiences in your childhood. It's funny recalling those moments even the situation isn't.

Don't know if I laugh at or sympathize you for such experience. But I must say you're a brave young girl there. Did anyone try to help you out? Good thing you got no serious injury. I wonder how your neighbor reacted knowing you took the bike without permission and more so seeing you with wounds.

My brother was the one who taught me how to ride a bicycle without training wheels. It was scary at first, but I got the hang of it and he soon could let go of the back of the seat and let me go on my own. I really liked to ride my bike when I was younger, and even got up the nerve to ride without sitting on the seat, and go as fast as the bike and my legs could take me.

I can do that too but not to impress anyone but to put strength into your feet especially when struggling at elevated roads. What can't I do is biking without your hands on the steer.

I first rode a bicycle at the age of five. Bicycle, with two small wheels. First learning, I often fell, and my knees are often decorated by injuries. But finally, I was able to control and balance the bike, until i finally get to drive it. Grateful, was able to ride at that time.

For a five years old, you really should have those little wheels at the back for you to learn balancing. Like you are, got so many bruises too because of biking and you can see still those even now.

Even i learned riding a bike when i was 10 years old.My experience of learning to ride a bike was really interesting. And i did not met with one accident but there were many.I learned to ride with my fathers cycle. It was a 24 inch bike. The height of the bike was almost equal to height. It was the school holidays when i started.I first did a scissor cycling to learn because of the height of bike. And then after a year i rode by sitting on the saddle.Accidents were very common with me when i started riding sitting on saddle. When i got hurt for the first time while learning,i hide my hand in my pocket from my mother because i knew that if she comes to know that i am hurt she will definately not allow me to ride the next day.

I remember when i was 7 or 8 years old, i learned how to drive a bicycle, without anyone's help. At first time,i rided it and it's indeed goes in a line, then a turn appeared, i had to move my handlebar, but maybe because of nerver tension, i moved the handlebar no directional, at last i fell off the bike and fell into shrubs. My knees impacted the shrubs and i got hurt. Even now, there was still a very big scar mark on my right knee just like a red birthmark. I rested 2 weeks in my house and could not walk. That was really a bad memory. Fortunately, i could drive the bicycle after i recovered....

Maybe you will agree because I heard stories that others were able to control and drive bicycle on the next trial after getting hurt. Well it happened to you and me. It can be true or we are just being careful in our next attempts.

Yes now that i stop and think about it i also had some great accidents when i first learned to ride my bicycle. I had twisted my ankle and i had to rest for a couple of days before i could learn to ride it again. I found it really difficult at first to learn but with my dad by my side it was really the most wonderful experience ever for me. I can never forget that day! Cheers!

Happy to say that I never met such accident that could stop me days from riding again. Besides minor bruises I don't have any injury related incidents. How I wish to have a father to help me through but sadly haven't had since 3 years old.

The day i learned to ride a bicycle was about 5 years old. That was the time i started running around, playing with kids in the neighbourhood. DUring my childhood days, bicycle was the most popular recreation because there wasn't any skating or skate boarding. I remembered when i learn to cycle, it was on 4 wheels before i took out one wheel to make it 3, and finally down to 2. It takes alot of fall to succeed but it's worth it for the speed and adrenaline rush.

I am eager as your age to ride my own bike but it was 5 years later when I finally had it. Indeed it's very popular and I envied those friends of mine who started riding at early age. Luckily, after 5 years bicycle still in the trend or even more popular in my place.

I learned to ride a bike when I was 11 years old, rather late because my parents would not allow me to ride a bike when we were still living in Manila because there were just too many accidents, it was different when we moved to a private subdivision, we could bike the whole day especially during vacations and we reached very far places, yes I have many scars from childhood, I later enjoyed assembling bikes more than ride them.

Oh yes, it's safer to bike inside the subdivision as the streets or roads are not that busy and the vehicles have speed limits. Most of my childhood friends both boys and girls were playing along with me and sometimes we go to nearby villages racing to eachother. I really missed those days. Got no talent though assembling bikes but I tried once the vulcanizing job.

hi..I envy you..I don't know how to drive a bike. :( .I'm 27 and everyone is trying to encourage me to try it.I guess I am one scared chic..I feel bad for myself that I cannot take the risk of getting hurt and scratches. However,I am proud to say that my 5year old son can drive a bike..months ago..all he did was drive his bike with balancer until one morning,my hubby decided to remove it.I was surprise that my son was able to drive a bike without a balancer at a very young age.I guess I'm gonna have to try it myself one of these days..I luv bikes..it'll be a dream come true to learn to drive. ;)

Hi there Tanya, Isn't late for you to learn how to drive a bike but if I may suggest ask your husband to guide you as he seems to know the steps, or start by putting the balancer as your son did, that is if you can ignore what others might say about you. Who cares anyway, it's your life and you don't need their consent nor approval. Goodluck!!!
