As agriculture lands are becoming lesser and lesser, moreover the changes in climate and various other reasons those vegetable cultivations in our place have become too difficult. Most of vegetables are brought from near by States. Moreover the hike of fuel too affected the cost. It is seen that in home cultivation lots of worms gets into it and if fertilizers are used it could damage the health of those who consume it. It is seen that each day the rate is increasing even though very rarely at times it gets bit reduced. Is vegetable available in your area costly, are they plenty available.

Here in my country, vegetables are still available but with the recent drop in the temperature, the region that supplies our vegetables has been hit hard by this frost. We are a tropical country, but up north where most of the vegetables are grown the vegetables are being harvested even if they are not ready because the temperature have gone really low. I am planning to go there this weekend and I don't hope to buy any vegetables, at least not in the price range that I expect it to be.

Here in china, the vegetable prices also up and up this year.Well, prices of lots of them have been several times more than before.
I really could not understand this, yes, maybe there is flood or draught or some natural disaster which made them more rare. But there are other reasons, including some bad businessmen and the government put too much paper money into the market.

I live in Manitoba and we have a short growing season, so right now most of our vegetables come from either the States and also from Chile. Near harvest season, it is from just over the border and from California. The trouble is that many farmers are converting their corn fields into ethanol, and that is not good. It means that fuel prices go up. Here in Canada even though we do not have restrictions like in the States such as not allowing drilling, we have to contend with out short growing season. I am thinking of growing my own vegetables and salads, but first I would probably have to take all the lawn out of the backyard or to use containers.
And the trouble is that with some people, esp. those who live in apartments or houses with no or small backyards, they are limited in their solutions. Sure we can turn the heat down at night and also during the day, but how low do we go to save money and when does it get too low? Also we could put better insulation, but what happens when one cannot afford the insulation?
Things do not look that good.

In the area where I live, the weather has be very freezing which was very damaging to many fruits and vegetables which increase the purchasing price. It is very important to eat several servings of fruits and vegetables daily, but with the increase in prices it is very difficult to eat a healthy diet that includes them.
It is very sad that some people are struggling desperately trying to survive the economic downturn to the economy and the prices are increasing every week. The merchants are really the big winner because they sell products that are of little quality for a lot more money than they are really worth.
We, the consumer, really have very few options when it comes to buying food for our families.

Even with the massive flooding of the north eastern states, we will always have plenty of fresh, premium, cheap organic vegetables & fruit available here. The cost won't even go up significantly & if a certain item does go up in price, we either grow our own or boycott it! It takes time, but we can learn how to combat worms & diseases in plants. Properly grown certified organic produce is strong & healthy enough to resist worm & parasite infestation. Yes, use hydroponics if you have the money, but we have so, so much horticultural wisdom handed down to us that we might as well make good use of it. We should be changing our eating habits to evolve much more than we are now. Governments will stop giving all the massive subsidies to meat production if it can see that the people aren't buying it anymore. They could then subsidize the production of healthy, beneficial food, especially when so much more water & land resources are freed up as a result. Growing plants organically also improves the soil each time instead of destroying it with animal agriculture & cheap tricks to get the most money back for the least effort.

Yes,because each aspect causes now vegetable prices so high that may be because of weather, also maybe caused by some external factors of malicious pushing up prices, anyhow, the price of of vegetables is in rising, now, the traditional Chinese Spring Festival will come,I think food can only continue to soar,ah,how dreadful!

It is winter at the moment in my home country. Therefore we can't grow vegetables or fruit here when the weather is cold. The good news is vegetables and fruit are exported from other countries for our benefit. The bad news is the prices are high. The costs are much lower in the summer months. Earlier this month value added tax went from 17.5% to 20%. It is so sad that vegetable costs in your home country are getting not at all affordable. You might be interested in organic vegetables but these are even more expensive than normal vegetables. Maybe you could begin growing some of your own vegetables. You could perhaps buy vegetables at a market because they will be cheaper than a supermarket.

Hello Sham,
It is true that Kerala is depending on the other states for vegetables and other food grains. Earlier they cultivated all these for own consumption and when they started to depend on other states the cost also become high. In this place vegetables are comparatively cheaper except the recent hike in onion price. The onion price hike is affected in all states of India. According to the officials the hike will remain upto 2-3 weeks.

Hi Shamrack!.
I think the same thing also happen here. Vegetable price raised until 100 percent than regular price. We had rain almost a year continuously so its really hard to grew any thing. Its seem start to had dry but I hope we don't had a full year dry season with I think will become disaster also because we will face severe drought and will able to grow any thing.
I am start to grow tomato and eggplant in container and so far its work really great. I can enjoy fresh tomato right from the vine and its organic too. I wanna grew my own vegetable too but I have very limited space so its won't possible. i think i had to satisfied with store bought vegetables.

Maybe some people or countries should try hydrophonics or growing plants and vegetables in a soiless medium under controlled environmental conditions, even using full spectrum lighting or artificial sunlight. For one you can grow vegetable at a limited space because they can be stacked one on top of the other, it's also grown indoor so it is less affected by climate changes and natural calmities
