Westborough Baptist Church to Picket Christine Green funeral

Christine is the 9 year old that was murdered by Jared Loughner this past Saturday. She was born on 9/11/2001 in the midst of terror and died during a senseless act of terrorism. Now this "church" wants to bring more pain to her family by picketing her funeral The people of Tucson are fighting back with 8'x10' "angel wings" worn by people who will protect the family from these sick, hateful, sorry excuses for human beings. I think this is a great idea. http://edition.cnn.com/2011/US/01/11/arizona.funeral.westboro/?hpt=C2 In Dayton recently a group of students held signs of love to protect the family of a soldier who had died from these freaks. I like this and the "angel wings" form of protection. While I would love to take a baseball bat to these horrible people, I have to admit that creative thinkers like the people in Tucson are better people than me and have much better solutions. I need to get that kind of mindset. What would you do if Westborough Baptist Church came to your town to picket the funeral of a fallen soldier, a child or other deceased person? What would you want to do if it was legal?

"Angel Wings" is an excellent idea much better than my idea (if it was legal) to give them a taste of their own medicine... shoot them!

Nut jobs like the Westborough congregation would spread their arms and beg you to shoot them, think they would then move on to their "reward". I have a feeling that their "reward" won't be what they are expecting.

I think "their reward" is what they deserve!!! I can find NO reason for them to walk on this earth; however, I truly believe that it is God's place to judge them...not me. Right now I'm wondering why He hasn't brought a plague among them??? All I can say is...in MY eyes they are WRONG!!!!

The angel wings idea might be the "solution" for all cities/towns where the WBC shows up to do harm. I can't believe the WBC can pass itself off as a Christian organization. I can't believe the Baptist Church would allow the WBC to use Baptist in its name.

Brainwashed or inbred--or both? I think any person with an IQ over 40 knows that WBC has NOTHING to do with the Baptist church which, in my experience, is made up of decent, sincere people who want to stamp out hatred instead of encouraging it as WBC does.

I have been a Baptist my entire life. The Baptist Church cannot stop them from using the name Baptist in their name as they are NOT part of the Baptist Association!!! They are an independent church organized in 1955 & not under the jurisdiction of any specific group except their leader Fred Phelps. The WBC is not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles, though mainstream Primitive Baptists reject the WBC and Phelps. So the true Baptist Association can do nothing to stop their hatred nor the use of the Baptist name. The Westborough Baptist Church is made up of mostly Phelps family who I can only assume have been slowly brainwashed over the last 56 years!!!

I wonder if the Baptist Church could try and stop them in the courts? I don't know under what law -- trademark/copyright/slander/liable/? It's just sad that WBC has "Baptist" in it. I'm not a Baptist, but I have several friends who are...and a lot of friends who are Catholic... None of us think the other is going to hell, at least not because we're Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Unitarian, Presbyterian and Lutheran. LadyMarissa, thanks for the background on the WBC. I've never delved in to the history of this "church", so, thanks. I just wish there were something the Baptist Church could do. It's like someone assuming your name (reputation, etc.) and dragging it through the mud. Has anyone ever really investigated the WBC and its members? Maybe there's a way to shut them down without violating their freedom of speech?

Well they're response to everything is "This is gods punishment on America for supposrting homosexuality & the war" so I'd probably beat the %^&$ out of them & say "This is our punishment for being an a$$ in the name of your god!". These people need to be locked away in solitary confinement for their own protection.

I agree. Unfortunately, one or more of them will probably get hurt one day and then all hell will break loose. I can't see them getting much sympathy but they love taking stuff to court! Luckily, the bikers that will be attending have done this before and know how to behave and the angel wings participants seem to be calm, serene people. The only nutjobs will be the WBC.

It is encouraging to me to know that there are people who have such loving spirits that they can come up with an idea like angel wings. I'm afraid my own spirit is much coarser and nearly as close to God. I hope I can be as good one day. By the way, WBC is NOT associated with the Baptist Church in any way except that they hijacked the name. Real Baptists do not have that kind of hatred in their hearts.

hidragon thats good to know as I used to go to the baptist church when I was going to the U of S.Dakota as it was on campus and had a wonderful youth program and college program . I belonged to the Baptist choir while I was at the U. I really enjoyed going each sunday even though I was a mthoidist going to the Baptist church lol.

Which is as it should be! As it is, people like the angel wings people and the bikers protect the families. It's good that we have people like that who have more self control than I do!

iagree with you. id want to take a bat to those freaks. they are as mentally ill as the nut job that killed her. but iam so glad some are so wise as to choose a good way to stop them as apposed to stooping to their level. they truely are angels and are wearing wings to prove it

AZ is passing a law today, I read, requiring protesters to stay 300 feet away from the mourners. I would have made it at least 1000 but it's better than nothing. Those people who thought of angel wings are very inspirational to me and embody what the Christian reaction should be. Of course, I'm sure they welcome the hundreds of bikers who will be there, too!

Wow, how someone would want to take time out of their schedule to picket things like this is unreal. Makes you wonder where their heart really is, and are they really people you want around you? I know that God never intended for people to be like this even when they do not always agree. But to have the others in the Church want to stand around there walking in the Church with Angels wings shows Faith and courage and a Love of God trusting him and believing that he is protecting and watching over them knowing no harm can fall upon them. To me, this is the best gesture anyone ever could do.

That is so true. Even though WBC wants to spread their hate they are actually inspiring love and togetherness. Their message will fail every time and I think that makes them angry. Meeting hatred with a wall of love is the only was to combat such vitriol. It is inspiring!
