Alcohol bad for loosing weight?

So, I'm a big guy, always being big since I was a little kid... but since I hit 20 or so, I've been on and off in trying to loose my weight. It's gone really well for me a few times, and I've lost about 80 pounds over a 1 year period, before, without any kind of pills or anything, just watching my diet and exercise. So, now, my weight has been going back up again, to a level that I just plain don't want it. I've been trying really hard throughout this last year to get rid of it, but it's been way tougher on me! It's been so difficult to get my weight down to where I want it. I thought it was just because I've been getting older... but I just realized something... I've also been drinking more over this last 2 years or so. I never used to drink alcohol when I was growing up, and only started to like it maybe 2-3 years ago, and now I drink often... but not going crazy with it... I have about 1-2 drinks, 2-3 times a week on average, and every so often, when it's a big alcoholic event, I have about 6 or so drinks... but that only happens once every couple months, or so. Could it be this that's keeping my weight from going down? I'd really like to know what all of you think... have you ever been through anything like this?

Yes of course it's the alchohol. Your body turns the alchohol into sugar (a carbohydrate) which it can metabolise to produce the energy that your body needs to function. But there is only so much that it needs for day to day energy needs, typically 2000 to 2500 calories for a male, the surpus is turned into fat which is the bodies way of storing fuel for future use. Also, if you drink a lot of soft cola type drinks, they are also loaded with sugar and which simply adds to the problem.
