Has anybody been to Guatemala? I just finished reading a book about it. It's capital is Guatemala City and their national bird is the quetzal. The great Mayan city of Tikal is located there. Guatemala's basic traditional instrument is the marimba. I was most interested in one village's way of celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). In the Cakchiquel village they fly huge kites that are 20 feet across, on this day.

We have a World Village there at Guatemala City being run by the Sisters of Mary. Thousands of Guatemalan youth are being taken care and given free education. It's a charitable institution there which was founded by an American priest, Msgr. Aloysius Schwartz who care for the less fortunate. The Sisters of Mary chose to have a World Village there to help Guatemalans.

I got a cheap flight to Cancun in Mexico and as part of my trip I went to two places in Guatemala and a number of places in Belize. I traveled to Tikal National Park and a lakeside town called Flores. I loved seeing the Mayan ruins and climbing up a Mayan temple to see the sunrise. If I had been able to spend longer in that lovely country I would have got a bus down to the Guatemala City and Antigua. There are more places in that sort of area that would be amazing to visit.
