Do you use metal detectors to hunt for gold?

It seems that there are many people who buy metal detectors, and use them to search for gold and other precious metals. Some people even specialized in hunting for precious metals underwater. Do you have such hobby? How is the findings so far? Do you think it is a good idea as a hobby or as an investment?

Are you a treasure hunter? Are you someone who is planning, or someone interested in venturing into treasure hunting? If so, I wish you good luck and may you find the hidden treasures of the old! I have friends here in our place who have spent so much money investing on tools for treasure hunting. They also have maps for hidden treasures. But they already have spent more than 30 years of their life, still not finding even a single treasure.

Hi Magtibaygom, I definitely do not plan to hunt for any treasure. I doubt there is such a group of persons exist in Singapore. This country is too small and too new for any hidden treasure. I think your friends are living in a happy dream. They may find their treasure one day. I just wonder what will happen if they find a hidden treasure buried ten metres into the ground. Are they going to dig it out? I think they have a better chance if they hunt in China. After all, most of the sites, such as the tomb of whatever emperors, are found by farmers.

Yeh i couldnt agree with you more treasure hunting can take over your life and can also get you into big trouble if you go on wrong land or dig something up like a metal pipe under ground lol.I do think that china would be a good place too start though as they have a lot of money and also it is well populated so there will be lots of stuff out there.

No but be careful with metal detectors and don't use them on archaeological sites. In a large part of the world you have to be archaeologist to do archeology and all you will earn will be a fee, the confiscation of your detector and jail. There are countries -- Italy, Turkey, etc. -- where you risk 20 years of jail if you use a metal detector on an archaeological site without an authorization : enough time to imagine a better way to find gold.

Hi Topffer, in my country, there is hardly a site qualified as archaeological site. I am thinking more in term of using the metal detector to hunt for lost gold chains or earrings. Many colleagues have lost the diamond in the engagement ring. Some of them manage to lose the whole gold chain while walking on the street. I think using the metal detector to hunt for those lost items are even better. That is why many hobbyists buy the one for beach use, and hunt for items that people have lost while playing with water or sand.

I did not saw a metal detector on a beach since ten or twenty years. People were finding more often the pocket money lost by the kid for an ice-cream than a gold chain. Here, the most popular beaches are cleaned now in winter with a special machine that sort out papers, plastics... and metal : I think that the gold chains and the coins are found by the cleaners now . But there are still many uncleaned and uncharted beaches. Each of us needs a part of venture, of fantasy and dream in life. I wish you to find many gold chains if you decide to buy a metal detector. Have a nice Sunday scheng1 !

Well yeh you couldstill find some on the beach but like said above i forgot that they clean the beaches and move the sand around over winter. You also have to remember the sea aswell it constantly comes in and out washing all stuff out there.Just imagine how much gold and other metals must be out there at sea there must be hundreds of grams if not thousands. If someone found a way of draining all the water and getting the metal then they would make a fortune.

I have never used a metal detector to hunt for gold. It sounds like it could be fun though. the treasures that could be found that are out there waiting would make it all worthwhile.

Hi Sender621, I have never tried that too. i think even if I find some lost coins or lost gold chain, I would be very happy with the findings. Those underwater metal detectors are good for divers who know where to look for sunken treasure. I think a single find will make a lot of money for the finder.

Yeh i have nottried it either but i think it would be really good for the hobby but i am not sure that you could turn it into a full time job as some days you will find nothing.Infact for experienced friends of mine some of them have found nothing even with the $2000+ metal detectors that go right into the ground but hopefully if you know your area well then you will do very well and hopefully make a lot of money.

I haven't try to search for golds, because where i live, i would have to make a long travel to go to a place where you maybe can find gold. It would be very interesting to make that a hobby.

Hi Chinoxads, there is no point hunting for raw gold, since these are mixed with the mud and other earth material. I think the metal detector is worthwhile if you manage to find a lost gold chain. Many people manage to lose their diamond earrings or gold chain while walking on the street. Most people do not even know where they have lost it. I think if we use the metal detector, we can find those treasures. Some people go to the beach every weekend and use the metal detector to hunt for those items.

Yeh plus with the price of gold at the moment really high i think if you find one then you will be really cool as people are still taking care and some earrings are so small that you dont really stand a chance.Although saying all this there is a slight chance you might find a small piece of gold.

no.I don't have such kind of hobby!but it sounds so cool and exciting!i mean being a investment or a explorer is very cool and I do want to be one of them, but the question is these things just are over my head!I just make some simple crafts,I like the feeling of making things by yourselves!anyway, have a good day!

Hi Xiaoanorincess, the problem is that the cost for a good metal detector is about $50 to a hundred dollars. The powerful metal detector can detect even aluminium foil. A person is more likely to get the aluminum foil or wrapping rather than the expensive metal such as gold and silver.

Wow, Wefight, I sure wish I have this kind of luck to find old coins. I know that some gold coins command a very high selling price now, especially those coins minted with 90% pure gold or silver. I will be happy even if I can find a gold earring or bracelet. There is a market for gold jewelries. Too bad I stay in a country that is hot and humid, and the public frowns on weird behavior. I think the police will invite me for a meeting in the police station if I walk around with a metal detector.

Yeh i think it would be a very cool hobby once you have paid off enough for the metal detector i used too know some guy near me that found a big area full of coins. When he dug them all up he found out they were some really rare ones and know he is wondering whether to sell them for a lot of money on ebay. And i am talking about 1k plus per coin and he has 17 of them lol :D.He seems to keep them though as he thinks he will make more money with them in the future as they become rarer and rarer for people losing them and breaking them.

I have always dreamed and wanted to buy a metal detector and make it a weekend hobby but I just don't know what kind to buy, they say the cheap ones are not very sensitive and would only detect nails or cans at very shallow depths while the more sensitive ones that can differentiate what is under at greater depths are really expensive, wonder how true. They also say finding treasures with a metal detector is not that easy, not unless you are in a site with known historical or archeological finds. Owning a metal detector in my country is big fuzz and would draw so much attention so I had second thoughts of buying one

Hi Louievill and Wefight, I think the cheap one is good only for searching for lost earrings or gold chain. You will be surprised to see how many people lost their gold chains while walking in the street. Some people with diamond earrings manage to lose the diamond. Since the diamond is so small, most people give up hunting for it. If you are serious about gold mining, I think the more expensive ones are better. I have checked out some metal detectors in Amazon. Many of these are for very specialized purpose, eg underwater, beach, forest and so on. The problem is that you need to have a shovel to dig if the treasure is a few feet in the ground. The underwater metal detector is good for those divers specialized in sunken treasure.

Yeh :D i would not really bother with the cheap versions as they are really rubbish and cant go very far at all.You also need too have lived in the area and know all the hotspots.Even then you might need permission of the landowners as most dont let you as it iwll dis value the site a lot.

Hi scheng1 and yeh you are right i forgot that you could walk the streets with a metal detector in search of things like gold and since i live in the 10th largest city here in the uk with over 300k people in i suppose i stand a very high chance although i suppose places like china and new york would be the best as they are pretty rich and well populated. Also if you walked round town with one for the day do you think that you would find much or not?

I do remember the craze for metal detectors many years ago, which now appears to have almost disappeared.

I think metal detector no effect on the gold. cause i have seem a young lady use many gold jewelry and checked with metal detectors. oddly enough it did not show any tool of metal.

Hi Henkiprananda, that is surprisingly to hear, since gold is a metal. If metal detector cannot detect gold, then I wonder how those miners discover the gold vein to dig for gold. I wonder what is the use of metal detector if it cannot even detect such expensive metal. Maybe it is good to detect only aluminium foil.

It depends if they have calculated their ROI correctly and whether they live in the right part of the world. For me (if you know where I come from), I think it will look weird walking around with that, they will call either police or IMH. There are better investments. By the way, how much are those? Can it be home-made instead?

Hi Tiffnkeat, the metal detectors have a very wild price range. It can cost as low as US$26 to as high as a thousand dollars. Some of the more expensive ones are for used underwater. That means you can use it to hunt for sunken treasure. I think we are more likely to get aluminium foil or wrappers than gold and silver if we walk around with the metal detector. That equipment looks more like the one that the cleaner used. I think people will think we are litter bug, make to clean up east coast.

Yeh you are right you need to work out the profits and loss but i think eventually you will pay it back if you live in a good area as if you buy a more expensive one like $500 and upwards then it will last a long time maybe even your whole lifetime.I personally would not bother with the small cheap ones as they are a waste of time and dont really bring up much though i would like too try a water metal detector i have not tried or heard of one before but they sound cool.
