Building A Computer

I never can seem to find all the options I want in a computer so I am always ending up not satisfied with what I get. Most of the time there are only two memory card slots or not enough other slots for all my cards. Most of the time I don't really have the processor that I want. I want a really fast one but unless you build your own they are too expensive. I want to pick out my own mother board and processor as well as plenty of ram memory. Does anyone know where the best place is to order these parts?

Looking at your profile you are in the United States. Friends on and offline I have over there are always bragging about newegg.com . Have a look there im sure you can find everything you need. You will need to decide what is it you want exactly though, saying a 'really fast one' doesnt necessarily mean its what you need. For example a Quad core may give you the same satisfaction as a 6 Core cpu. Save a bit of money right there alone. Another thing to look at is what you will be using it for, games? movies? surfing the web? etc etc If you were just going to surf the web, emails etc then a top end duo core at the very most would be sufficent no point spending extra money on something higher (such as a quad or 6 core) if youre not getting the benefits from it. Alot of boards, atleast the ones ive looked at recent have had at the minimum 4 ram slots, 6 sata ports 2 pci, pci-e then sound etc. Depending again on what you need for expansion would depend on how many expansion slots you need. Alot of boards now come with atleast 5.1 sound built on so unless you have a really top notch sound card sometimes you wont notice the difference between a basic card and onboard sound. Another thing to look at is the space you will require inside the case and so on. For example you decide im gonna do the odd top quality game, so you buy a rather big and bulky graphics card. You would be surprised at how many people buy a big hefty card and realize oops this wont fit in my case with sitting against this hard-drive, or cables etc. My advise is to buy parts first then look at your case. Give yourself a budget also. Goodluck

Sorry forgot to add, you will have two options mainly for a motherboard, mini (or sometimes labelled micro) atx and full atx. The mini atx is a smaller board and usually not much room for expansion, where the full atx will at times come up with 3/4/5 PCI slots. If you want upgradeability then look at full size ATX in my opinion (you will be sure to get atleast 4 ram slots, and more than 2 pci slots.

Extra great response. I agree with you that I can get what I want with a quad core and not spend on over kill. I also like the full size mother boards with four memory slots and several pci slots so I can always upgrade. I will always want lots of ram and a video card. The case is important to me also. I like the full size cases with plenty of room and I think I will finally get one with a clear side and lights. I know pretty much what I want I just can't get it under $700.00 unless I get a refurbished one from pricewatch. Thanks so much for your response.

I had this probem when decided to get a new computer early last year. Rather than getting all the bits and building it myself, (been there, done that), I decided to have it built by one of the online companies that allow you to spececify all the components that you want and then they build it for you. That worked out all right for me and I've got a really good up - to date machine with exactly the specification I wanted and which did not cost a fortune. I belive there are several companies in the US that will do this and you can probably find them by googling "configure your own computer"

I have found that when ordering your basic parts it is sometimes more feasible to let the manufacturer put the mother board etc. in before shipping then all I have to do is add the hard drive, dvd drive, and install windows and memory. Thanks for your response. Most companies that sell computer parts offer to install them before shipping at no extra charge or very little.
