Did You Know That Lilies Can Be Toxic To Cats?

I didn't know this until today. Mum rang me and, during our conversation, told me that any lilies I have should be dug up immediately because they are toxic to cats! I had no idea! Did you? Fortunately, we only have two of them. Funnily enough, John pruned them to the base earlier today. Maybe he should pull them out completely? Our neighbour who left has two cats but of course, they have all moved out now. Our cat goes out but is disinterested in the flower bed as she doesn't stay out very long and uses the litter tray anyway. I'm just worried about any strays that may be in the area. http://www.vetbase.co.uk/information/lilies-are-toxic-cats.php

Well I wasn't sure about Lily's but I'm pretty aware that certain plants can be toxic to cats and dogs there are also certain foods that we humans eat that cats can not and should not eat, and I think its a good idea for pet owners to educate themselves on whats safe and not safe to feed there pets and maybe your post will help people be more informed about these things.

This was a very good link, because it gives signs and symptoms of how your pet might react. I think you are right, apples, we need to educate ourselves to what the dangers are and how to deal with them, as we will never be able to remove all hazards for the kitties from our environment.

I have always had cats, and we have always had lilies. I think the cats are more interested in other plants, like grass and I have never had a cat have a problem with my lilies. I would not dig them up. Did you know that both dogs and cats will lick where anti freeze has dripped and it will kill them. You can get pet safe antifreeze for your vehicles, but most people do not. There are many things that are toxic to animals and to humans, we cannot remove them all from our lives.

The thing is, if all this was researched, no doubt animals like cats would be experimented on..and I don't want that either.

Yes, lilies are toxic to cats, and dogs... BUT... cats and dogs that have a fairly normal access to outside, and can get to other greens are in less danger than a totally inside cat who any green thing is a novelty. So, its kind of up to you. Dig them up or not, but know that since your cat can get to other greens and they aren't inside with inside only cats, they aren't that great a danger.

I have lots of lilies in my yard and lots of cats come to visit. None of them are the least bit interested in eating them. Don't worry about it.

What about brushing their coats against the pollen and washing it off though?

Hiya Janey, Did not know that either. I know that Lavender oil and I suppose maybe the Flowers are toxic for Cats too. I had no idea that Lilies could do such harm though. They look very inoffensive don´t they? I will keep that in mind though I know that a lot of Dogs here are being Poisoned by Farmers and Land owners but I don´t think that they are trying to poison the Dog it´s something else they are out to get rid of but the poor old Dog comes in for it. So if anyone is out on farmland or suchlike and your Dog picks anything up over here get him to drop it right away. Also I don´t know what they are using on their Baits but it´s quite lethal to Dogs and I imagine Cats too.

I didn't know that either. But then I don't have any cats. My neighbors all have cats, but they keep them indoors because of the coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, eagles, owls, etc. I do watch for bad plants for my dogs and I won't plant anything that could make them sick or kill them. One plant we have around here bad for dogs is oleanders. I won't plant them...besides their non-native/exotics from California, I think.

From what I can gather your dogs should be OK around lilies, if you have them.

The plants I've planted are mostly native (penstemons, salvia, etc.). The only non-native plants I have are mums...but I might have killed them this year. I guess I should go check. I don't usually plant "normal" flowers, such as lillies, daffodils, etc. But I'll certainly keep the lillies in mind.

I never knew that lilies are toxic to cats. Cats seem to be magnetized to different plants and my cat has killed so many of my potted plants. One favorite especially during the cold months here in my country is lemon grass. I guess it helps them with their colds because I have seen my cat Purr chew on the lemon grass then push his nose on the stem. My neighbor even complained that Purr killed her lemon grass plants too. But this is useful information. I don't have lilies by the way.

Wow, I've never heard that about lemongrass before. Attacking it eh? I love the fact the cat killed your neighbours' lemongrass plants too. They can't help pooing and weeing in neighbours' gardens as well. It's what cats do isn't it?

I had no idea...wow..I did know that there were some plants..common plants that were poisonous to pets but I had never heard of lilies. Poinsetta leaves are very dangerous for dogs. I didn't know that until a couple of years ago.

Mum only found out about it after reading it in the press. So, she asked me to do my research and..lo and behold, I found that website I just had to share with my fellow feline lovers out there.

Very helpful information Janey as although I do not own cats my good friend does so I emailed her the link so she can take a look and understand this as I did not know this before your discussion. Thanks so much.

I'm so glad you have let your friend know about this..the more the merrier (although I don't want to scare people either), which explains why I sent the link.

Well, no, but honestly, they do not seem like something healthy for anyone to eat, cats or humans. So I am sure she is right!

Fortunately, my cat isn't interested in plants. One of Mum's is though. She likes EATING THEM! She breaks twigs off them, eats small leaves, allsorts. No lilies though, thankfully!

Thanks for sharing this info and this useful link. I did not know that lilies are poisonous to cats, although I did know many plants are--pointsettias, for instance, and many types of evergreens. Since our cats are indoor only, we have just stopped having any sort of houseplants indoors, just to avoid any problems.

That's a very wise move. We bought some kitty grass and we've ended up planting it outside because our cat isn't interested in it! We've stopped giving her tuna now (she has the all-complete munchies) and she's not throwing up as much.

Yes, tuna is actually very bad for cats, too. We don't even give our cats cat food with tuna in it--it can cause urinary tract problems.

I came to know about this from quite an unusual knowledge base- the sitcome FRIENDS! It is when Monica is worried about her wedding budget and Phoebe says that 'you wouldn't want lillies in your wedding. If a cat ate them, it would die!' Strange source but one does learn some general knowledge from such sources.

Wow, you're the second person to mention that and I'd not seen the episode in question. Phoebe wasn't such an airhead after all!

Wow, that's something new. You learn something everyday. I certainly hope they're not toxic to rabbits as well. We have rabbits here, and I don't want them dying because of that!

As far as I know, it only applies to cats but it may be worth checking out, just to be on the safe side...not that I want to alarm you or anything. I'm sure your rabbits will be fine.
