When I was a student, I remember I was good in English. But since I wasn't using English language in the past (except just recently), I am no longer good in English. I am now trying to learn it again because I need to, I am into article writing!

Learning english was always fun for me. I moved to Quebec, Canada from France when I was 6 years old, and had english classes all the way to the end of highschool. Even if my parents dont know a word of english I was fortunate enough to hang out with english people really often, plus travelling in the rest of Canada and USA, so at some point I just learned it perfectly, and I am so happy i did! Now I have friends from UK, spain, germany, austria, usa, and english is the way to communicate with everybody.

I was born in America, in the northwest. I loved English in school and got very good grades. I just had a nack for it and love the language. I love to write and find the right word for the given situation. Love to play word games and keep up on new words and meanings. It is a lovely language.

I wish I understood what you meant alittle better. I have a history in the English language and so that helps.

Yeah, learning English is fun and other languages, too. Since English is the national language and the second language of our country, I don't have difficulties in learning it. It's really quite interesting that Americans (they conquered our country) taught our old folks to speak and write in English so when the new generations were born, it was like inborn to them to speak in English. They can easily grasp English words and speak it.
in my point of view, maybe your students are just afraid to commit errors in their grammars and spelling but eventually, they will be learning and speak it and enjoy it with your help. Just be patient and show to them that you really speak it and enjoy it, too. Thanks :)

Teaching English as a second language is sometimes boring because student do not understand it yet.
What we do in my country is to start it from the very basics. in the elementary level.
I had taught in China ESL for 3 years and found out that they do a different thing giving their students hard time to grasp the language.
I am sorry to say that most school do it the "rush way".
They ignore the "basics" and jump to memorize difficult words with out understanding the alphabets.
Most schools tell me that I just do it to entertain students which does not satisfy my feelings.
As if I am a clown in front of the room. hahaha
One way to teach the language is to let them participate.
For example, In teaching them English words, let them read, say it and let them write it on the board, let them spell out the letters, and give their meaning.
You can do this in one hour with 3o students.

Well adhyz, entertaining students is different from teaching them.
Chinese schools just want me to do that but not to teach them seriously.
In this case as a teacher I am not satisfied with the result.
Because what I want is for my students to really learn from me.
If I give evaluation and found out that only a few understood the lesson because they just want to laugh, this makes me sad because on my part it makes me an ineffective teacher which affects the way I feel.

Hi Adhyz!.
I am not really good either at English when I in junior high but when I was in senior high I got really great teacher who made English is fun. Its not about tenses but about understanding it. He gave us many translating task and I got her as my English teacher for 3 years. I am lucky in this case because I can not use others language beside English in her class. Even how awful we speak he will try to understand ans smile.

hai nangisha...wonderful stories...
ya, some of english teacher never do the best..most of them only do based on curriculum...
some of curriculum is very boring and make many students dont understand and can not speak english..
how come??
if we are truly want our kids want to speak english, we must do better...
if we see curriculum is very boring, why we never change the method to be fun and understandable by our students??

To make the students feel interested in learning a language, the teacher should be creative in class, playing some games with them, such as hangman, bingo etc, not just reading, dictation and exams. Also what is important is that the teacher should set up some situations and ask the students to make dialogues using what they've learned, so that the students can practising the language withing different contexts.

Yes, students are more interested in games, when they hear the word game, they will be excited. You can divide them into different groups, prepare some exercises, and make them to have a contest. The exercises can include questions, or can involve them to write answers on the blackboard, etc. The score each group. Competition can make them more interested in doing exercises.
When reviewing some words, another method I use is word guessing. YOu can ask a student to draw or describe something, (cannot say the word!), and let others guess the word.
Hope this will be helpful.

Learning other languages is fun for people who are talented in languages. For others learning languages may sound impossible hence they never started it. The good thing is that our Government put English subject in our education starting from elementary school. That way, we are exposed to English as early as possible. The bad thing, we do not have qualified English teachers in schools so their teaching method in English is questionable. I always check my niece and nephew works on English - so I know that what I am talking about.
Well, as for me, to learn other language we need to know the culture of the people, how do they express themselves, how do they interact with each others, how do they think on a subject. Some of their culture maybe in opposite to ours, if we do not know this, we can hurt or be unconsciously rude to them.

that's really true~even if i really love to study English but the way they taught us.......That is why learning that subject for years mean meaningless unless we have an alternatives to serve the best for ourselves.
most of the time i learn English by myself rather than with someone else or teacher with me.

Back when I was still in my elementary years, English words were taught by my teachers. As a child then, I was quite hesitant to learn such because we also have another language to learn aside from our native tongue. It was difficult for me, but gradually I learned how to read, write, and speak in English. Our medium of instruction here in my country made my learning of the language easier.

I think learning english is not difficult if we really took interest in it.Everything is like this.If you really like it,you would try your hard to make it good.So at first i learned english on the internet and try to listen more and most important is that i have to say it loud.Oral english is very important because you have to communicate with native people. So i think speaking out should be the best way for us to learn english better.

Hi dear this is arvind from India.
When i was in 12th standard i start speaking english properly. Means after a long time i was able to do that. In India there is a local language called "Hindi". and used to speak only that. But i think learning english is very easy but using english on regular basis is necessary.
Thanks

I am from America but in my Spanish class people are always talking about how hard it is to speak and my parents being from Egypt i get mixed up with the words and pronunciation. Yet i am at the top of my class. I have a accent (because i sound cool when i speak :P) and i love when people try to talk like me. not really on subject but i would just like to say.

Hello adhyz,
Your students are right. English teachers from highschool were boring. English was boring class, they didn't do anything to make us interested in learning English. What I know I've learned mostly by myself. I was motivated to learn because I needed to read English articles over the Internet about the subjects that interested me. I attended some English classes after finishing the University and there I insisted on grammar issues. I am still learning and my activity in myLot helps me a lot.
So, if you want to make your students be interested in learning English, you must find out what are the subjects within their interest and then try to discuss with them themes from that interest. I wish you good luck!
