Two-Way Glass or Mirror - Can You Tell The Difference??

Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? A policewoman who travels all over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on.
She said that when we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., many do not know for sure whether the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror. There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms.
So, how can we tell?
Place the tip of your finger against it and if there is a GAP between your finger and the reflection, then it is GENUINE mirror. However, if your finger DIRECTLY TOUCHES the reflection, then it is really a 2-WAY MIRROR!
REMEMBER. No Space, Leave the Place.

Unfortunately, you have been misinformed as this page explains: http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/mirror.asp
First of all, the two-way mirror is 'old technology'. Miniature cameras are much more likely.
Second, all mirrors are made from a sheet of glass with silvering (and usually a protective coating in the case of normal mirrors) on one side. A two way mirror has less silvering (actually an aluminium coating) and no protective backing. It is only because it is dark on one side of the mirror that it looks as though it is reflecting all the light back. In fact half of the light passes right through. Normal mirrors are, of course, always installed with the glass side outwards but two way mirrors may be installed with the glass facing either way, so your 'finger test' is no guarantee that the mirror is a one way mirror if there appears to be a gap between the finger and the image.

Not professionally, Gameslayer. I just know 'stuff' and what I don't know I can look up.

Don't believe everything you read! I guess I shouldn't have assumed you were intelligent enough to know this, my bad.

Some people can tell when they are faced with two way glass. I am not one of those people. i could be standing in front of a two way mirror and i would not know the difference.

I do know that a mirror built into a wall is highly suspicious of being a 2-way, as apposed to a mirror hanging on the wall. The mirror in the bathroom at our library is built into the wall, however when turning off the light I see nothing on the other side. The backside of that wall is an empty hallway. If these too factors weren't there I would have left the room!

Wow! This is a really good information. I will try to do this every time I get naked in a fitting room. I have never thought of this before and when I think about the possibility that this could happen, i feel scared. With the advent of technology nowadays, they could just record it or watch us undressing and sell videos of women naked in that fitting room. It's kind of creepy.
Thanks again for the information.

Sorry
This didn't work on my bathroom mirror, or any of the other mirrors in our house.

I have heard this before and it seems to be great advice. I think it is pretty freaky that there could be two way mirrors installed in clothing stores. I remember not so long ago on here, hearing about a store that was caught having one installed!
Luckily for me, I am male and less likely to be the victim of such an invasion of privacy.
