Help! This thing is driving me crazy! Are there any other sufferers out there? What do you do for it? I've tried everything. For those who have no idea of this condition, I will try to explain it. When you have a chronic cough the first thing you do is go to a doctor which is what I did. Naturally the first thing they will check is your lungs. Xrays and MRIs usually follow. There is no mucous being coughed up, and no congestion. In fact, the cough is dry and contains nothing but air. It is also involuntary, and you can no more stop it than stop a freight train. You have no fever and other than the violent cough, you feel pretty good. The attacks are usually violent and sometimes you cough until you gag. I have even pulled muscles around my abdomen. Fortunately there are periods when you don't cough so you do get a break from time to time. Unfortunately though, because everything appears normal, some doctors think it's only psychosematic and its probably all in your mind. My lung doctor couldn't find a cause so he simply called it chronic bronchitis. If I'm not mistaken, COPD usually has some mucous involved. I have tried throat sprays with mild anesthetics such as pocket Chloresceptic to soothe the nerve and it does work most of the time. Some cough drops work fairly well. I'm trying a regimen of Vitamin B12 now in hopes that will help. I decided to do some research on this condition and found a website which explains it pretty well: http://www.fauquierent.net/cough.htm

Same as you , i am suffering from stuffy nose and cough since last Friday. My throat started to get itchy when my officemates and i ate a lot of chocolates while discussing in a meeting. I wasn't able to drink water for about 30 minutes after eating those chocolates , so when i got home i noticed the itchiness. I gargled warm water with a teaspoon of salt but to no avail, until when i woke up i already have this stuffy nose and cough. I am treating my cough with a mucolytic syrup but its seems it's still so sticky in my chest when i cough. I will be going to the doctor when this persist for two more days. Meanwhile, i will see if the said mucolytic will treat it.

Thanks for your response SYMPLYD. Sounds to me like you may be allergic to chocolate. I'd have that checked out if I were you. I don't have any itching, runny nose, sinus infection, stuffiness; only a dry, non-productive violent cough.

You sound just like me! Driven to distraction ! Chest Man says there's nothing wrong, Ear Nose & Throat guy said much the same but with the addition of "Count yourself lucky you are only ill half the time" - my cough is seasonal, it kicks in Oct / Nov (for the past ten years plus) and goes away in Spring. My family doctor has given up and admitted defeat! Found a wonderful piece on YouTube, search for "Chronic Cough" and think I have found my problem and doc agrees that I seem to have a full house on symptoms. Currently trying to locate someone in UK who knows this thing and can offer me the treatment I so desperately need. May I ask why you think Vitamin B12 might help ? Cheers in coughing, Maggie in Redcar (UK) xxx
