Prices of Petroleum products (Petrol / Diesel, etc.) are rising day by day and its now reached more than USD 100 in international market. The whole world is facing this situation of price rise in petrol and diesel which is making difficult for medium salary group people to drive for long. What measures should be adopted to stop this rise in prices and what alternates can be used. Can Biodiesel research has reached at that stage that it can fully replace the petroleum products.
Comment and suggest measures for betterment of society

When I had purchased my bike, Petrol prices were 48 rupees/liter in India. Now they are 63 rupees/liter in just 3 years.
I think it is about time we switched to hybrids. Unfortunately, hybrids are not available in India yet and the one that is available Honda Civic Hybrid costs a bomb.
If nothing is done soon, we'll end up using bicycles again soon!!

Indian petrol prices in Uttar Pradesh is Rs. 63.15 which finally costs Rs. 64 per litre. Its becoming difficult to drive bikes even as roads are too congested and we have to deal with heavy traffic which also consumes lot of fuel. The best alternative you suggested is cycles (Bicycles) which cost no fuel just human effort for paddling. Or we can try the new electronic bikes introduced by Hero and some other companies. The problem with them is that they cannot carry much load and the maximum speed is 40 KMPL.

I agree with you banasree that only prices can not be blamed. We humans are the actual faulters in this case. We must utilize the natural resources in proper format and should not over use it. If we start consuming the natural resources like petrol, diesel, water, wood, etc. we will never find any difficulty in their availability and it will be available at cheaper rates.

Even if we switch to hybrids, it won't solve the problem because not everyone can afford it. This divide might lead to a social sigma. You have to come up with an option that everybody can afford. To the best one is biodiesel. But this will cause a food vs fuel argument. Plus governments don;t want people making it at home so they made home made biodiesel illegal. They want people to go out and buy it instead of make it. So in reality no one cares about the environment, thats just crap people say to please the ignorant. Its all about money!!!

Not only petroleum's price is rising day by day, other things also in the same situation. Of course, to find an alternative for petroleum is the best thing. But up untill now, we have not succeed in that. So as an ordinary person in this world, what we can do is try our best to live economically. For example, we can take a life to pick up our kids. Or family A pick up kids today, family B pick up kids next day. If time permits, we can ride a bicycle to work. Or if we work nearby, we can walk or run to office. That will be a way of kill two birds with one stone. We can not only save petroleum, but also be more healthier. Why not do that?

You are right mastinet, the petroleum product prices are rising at enormous rate. Just 2 days back the local prices of petrol in India rose by Rs.3.5/liter (about 8 cents) this is just after one month when they had increased it by similar margin. This is biting the common man just not for travelling but in just about everything as transportation cost gets added to all commodities. To arrest this I think first and foremost the research and development in other modes of fuel energy like sun energy, wind energy etc. has to be increased many folds so that the pressure on petroleum energy eases. Another very important point is to encourage mass transportation like buses, trains etc. in place of individual cars. Reduce the use of fuel gulping SUVs all over the world.

The petrol prices in India was around Rs. 47 in January 2010 and its jumped to Rs. 63 with an increase of Rs. 16 per litre in just a year. This is making our pockets burn. We have to think much before starting our vehicles for a journey. The research can be done to fully adopt biofuels as much work and research has already been done and in progress to use jatropha oil as biofuel in place of petrol and diesel.

i think now we have an electric car and fuel oil subtitute. but not yet widely used because it is much more expensive than the price of oil, including the cost of her treatment. manufacturers may need to lower prices because the cost of production of electric cars and fuel oil substitute much cheaper, if they want to save the earth. not just make a profit.

I agree. But electric cars and fuel substitute can not solve the problem alone. We all have to think for solving the problem. The best measure can be car spooling. We must start making partnerships for driving. I mean two neighbors working in near by areas should go on one vehicle which will save both petrol and our environment.

I don't think governments going to make biodiesel the solution because it can be made at home. All you need is the knowledge and that will run many companies out of business. So to make life difficult they want us to buy more hybrid and electric vehicles so we can pay a higher electricity bill. Its all about money my friend not about the environment. Thats just an excuse. When something is in high demand the price go up. When something is in surplus and not many people wants to buy it the price goes down. Only two things will stop the rising price of oil. Find another energy source that is reliable and efficient but this will be expense and take years to implement and develop. So the second option which is the cheapest option is to drill for more oil to meet the demand and to create a surplus so that the price can come down. And this is the world we love in.

Prices are rising in many countries and regions common problems. This is a normal stage in the world economy, as long as no serious inflation is acceptable.
On the other hand, the price increases at the same time your income increases.
