Does anyone know when the best time to travel to the Caribbean is?

So I have been following the discussions about Caribbean cruises here on MyLot, and I see there are quite a few people who have been there or would want to go there. So would I, but I honestly have no idea what the best time to go there is... Does anyone know, or do you have any recommendations what time of year is the best there? I know there are hurricanes in the Caribbean sometimes, so I would mainly like to try to avoid them...
