Forums like yahoo answer, answer.com, linkedin, and even here in Mylot, hundreds of answers are posted everyday in response to questions asked by users of these sites. And the amazing and astonishing part is this interaction takes place between people who are mostly stranger to one another. Why do they and you do so? What motivates people to spend their time and effort in responding?
In my point of view I too answer questions when I feel it interests me or I have knowledge about the matter, or I also want to know the answer thus join the discussion. It also happens when I get any questions about my country. I love my country and I want to answer any question related to it. Or it may be about my work, subject of study which give me two way knowledge. as I believe..sharing knowledge helps gaining more knowledge. This is the only thing that gets bigger in amount by sharing. There is also a hidden pleasure that adds up to fuel. It always makes me feel good and honored when someone appreciates my answer and discus further on it. It's like an achievement to me.
When I asked some friends of mine, some reasons came as follows:
1. Help someone in need: If someone is in need of some information, opinion or advice, why not help out if you are in a position to?
2. It's about give and take: Only when you help others, they will be forthcoming when you have a question of your own. It's a form of professional courtesy.
3. Personal branding: It shows others for what you are, increases exposure and opens doors of opportunity.
4. Insights: When you participate, you get insights which you otherwise may have not got from people you would not know. It helps understand other people's perspective of things. It always teaches something new.
5. networking through conversations: When you participate it may lead to conversations. Ans these may lead to networking opportunities..especially with like-minded people.
6. A good feeling: If the answer has been able to help someone, and they acknowledge it, it generates a worm feeling inside.
7. Mini journalism: There are some who want to be writers of articles and books and till cannot do so, this is a means of expressing their views.
8. Exercises the brain: When you answer a question, you think about what is being discussed. And this exercises the brain into further thinking.
Some even said they do so because they feel like it. So do you answer questions because of any reasons above? or you have your own reason...then what they are?
Feel free to share your opinions and views. Your participation is always welcomed and appreciated.
Cheers...

I answer questions because it releases my stress, it enhances my vocabulary and English and it promotes workout of the brain in thinking for answers. Perhaps, it's also a natural stimulus for us, that we see or read a question, we are expected of an answer. :)

I answer questions mainly to help someone in need provided I know the answer. It's also a good learning process because there might be others who knows more than you know.

Yeah..right you are. I personally can know many things but there is always a limit but the combine knowledge is always way better that one can get throughout his/her life. Like I remember when I was a child mom told me a story. We can easily break a stick but a bundle of sticks needs so many efforts and force to break and sometimes it seems impossible. likewise when we share something...it works as combined force. I know some people who feels bad to know from others, but I always love to learn from others, whoever he/she is, younger, older, lower than my status it doesn't matter. Only valuable thing is how many information and knowledge he/she has. To me the person who has more information, is richer than anyone who has tons of dollars.

For me, it's the best method to get over the writer's block. Every time I feel stuck, I go to one of these sites and answer a couple of questions - just enough to get me back into the writing mood. It's also a way to relax after finishing an article and before starting on the next one, and a good source of inspiration for topics.
Needless to say, I find many discussions genuinely interesting, and I answer because I want to contribute to the topic and to see what others have to say about it.
And on Yahoo Answers there's also the very selfish interest of placing a link to my articles every now and then in an answer to get some more views.

lol....I saw some of my friends to do so...they put the link of their sites to catch traffics easily and really it helps a lot. It also good for reader like us to find out related topics and answers. i like to visit links added at the bottom of the post because I sometimes find some topics totally different that I was looking for but interesting enough to stick me on that page..I learnt many unexpected things but it's fun...like playing with internet and know as many things when you are totally unaware of it..learing is not boring now....

Me too. Communication skills are most important now a days and people like us who are afraid of foreign languages like English..it's a good medium to learn and practice. I have learnt lots of words I never new, basically some communicative Englishes, the way to approach to others, how to explain thought in most acceptable manner. I'm learning and still love to learn more and more everyday. I way good to learn than bookish english which actually have no practical use.
