What is actuarial science?

I'm taking it as my degree course this coming May and I have no idea what it really is, only because Dad wouldn't allow me to pursue something else. What is actuarial science all about anyway? To be an actuarist, is it the only career option in this field?

actuarial science is all about calculating and analysing risk for insurance companies. It is a really good paid job. One of the highest paid one in the maths field.
