Utah may install a surveillance system in an unmanned blimp. Spying in the sky? WTF? http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70F1DJ20110116?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews&rpc=76 Have you noticed all new laptops have a built in camera? Scary. How do you feel about this? By the way, put a piece of tape over camera lens.

Ever seen the movie "They Live". That was the first thought I had when I read about this, was the drone that was tracking him. It seems that George Orwell's 1984 came a little late but it is on its way all the same. Technology didn't bring us more freedom but less of it.

I am actually all for the use of surveillance cameras watch the streets, especially in areas where there is a lot of crime. I know some people argue that it would be nothing for one of these cameras to look into someone's house, etc. Well, yeah, that's a risk, that someone who has access to the cameras won't misuse them.. however, I think the bigger picture here, that criminals would be caught on tape and hopefully deferred from participating in crime in the first place, far outweighs the possibility of some sicko catching me picking my nose on camera!

Drive byes really aren't a new thing. They've been around for hundreds of years. The mafia was known to use them when people didn't pay for "protection" and before automobiles they were done on horseback. Do you really think everyone had "common decency" in Ben Franklin's day? Do you really think GANGS didn't exist back then? "I think the bigger picture here, that criminals would be caught on tape and hopefully deferred from participating in crime in the first place, far outweighs the possibility of some sicko catching me picking my nose on camera!" That may be fine for YOU, but why should you be allowed to waive MY rights? Do you really have any respect for the constitution of the 4th amendment?

Benjamin Franklin lived in different times and did not have to fear gangs, drive by shootings for no reason what so ever, or people who have no: common courtesy, common decency, morals, values, personal responsiblity.

Ok, so you guys can join those petitioners attempting to block the installation of a camera on a street corner where half my city's crime typically takes place.. however, if your loved one is killed or raped on that corner, and that crime goes unsolved for the rest of time.. I don't want to hear no complaining! If my loved on gets killed on that corner, I'm going to hold each and every petitioner responsible!

PC Camera - I do not know if this photo is clear enough for you to see the icon.
I have this little icon at the top of my screen (photo) is this what you meant? Do you not need a web cam for this to work?

Well, Walmart has partnered with homeland security to get people to rat fink on each other...Orwellian 1984 101...There are cameras at every street corner in the County I live in and they do not all point at your license looking for red light runners...They are pointed at your FACE while you sit at the red light. Bizarre! A friend works for the folks that keeps up the cameras...some of them take night photography. We have had the "balloons" in the sky for ages...they try to pass them off as weather balloons...idiots. With the s510 bill on the books now, the poor will not be able to afford fresh vegetables in a year or so...Another book or movie comes to mind...Remember the 70s movie "Soylent Green". Our food is already full of pheromones and fillers whats a little more?

I'm ok with the blimp...I see it as not much different than officers in patrol cars with binoculars, aircraft/helicopter surveillance, etc. Doesn't mean I like it...another good reason for living out of town. Because I live up against BLM/Ft.Bliss/WSMR lands/WSMR restricted airspace, you don't find aircraft/helicopters/blimps/balloons flying over. (Now, my neighbor swears she's seen flying saucers coming from behind our houses?) And I'd like to know the cost of the blimp, so we can figure the real cost of monthly operation. I seriously doubt it's a $100 plus a few bucks. But it still may be cheaper to operate than aircraft/helicopters. I have a 2007 or 08 laptop I use at family reunions to run the projector and that's about it. I don't intend on replacing it, because I really don't like laptops... But you know, I never checked, because I use it so infrequently, whether it might have a built-in camera. Next time I pull it out, I'll look and tape if necessary. Thanks.

Yes it is scary! As scary as the satellite zooms in on web maps of all our homes!! I find it interesting though that folks are not privacy conscious as they talk aloud on the streets, on public transports, in market places ... everywhere .. on their cell phones ... about any and every personal thing ... that amazes me too! Another scary thingy is wireless anything!! Hooray for high-tech!

You think THAT is scary? Just look at what the pervs running some highschools are doing. They're spending TAXPAYER DOLLARS to give laptops to kids to take home, and then using the cameras in those laptops to spy on children including in their bedrooms. It's the most disgusting and frightening thing I've seen done in a long time and I say that not just because of what's happening, but because it was endorsed and supported by those in charge. "The suit said that on November 11, an assistant principal at Harriton High School told the plaintiffs' son that he was caught engaging in "improper behavior" in his home and it was captured in an image via the webcam." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/02/18/national/main6220751.shtml http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/18/harriton-high-school-spie_n_467491.html http://articles.cnn.com/2010-02-19/justice/laptop.suit_1_laptop-program-webcam-district-s-two-high-schools?_s=PM:CRIME

I had heard about this. My daughter was issued a laptop at her school the paper work said they would NOT be using any recording equipment. I warned my daughter anyway, she only uses it at school or in the kitchen. Oh yeah - and with tape over the camera

This is totally disgusting to use children to spy on their family. It reminds me of Hitler's Jugend when German children were encouraged to spy on their parents and then report them.

It is a little freaky that the new laptops have a camera. I often check to see if the light is on, though I know that is an easy solution to someone who truly wants to spy. I have nothing to hide, but I still think these little stories of how the government is wasting money to spy on us all is disheartening. They say we have no money, yet we have enough to spend on these frivolous programs.

There is a camera at the top of the screen. I always don't know why the camera built up om my laptop untill you point it out. It was scary someone could remotely turn on my cameras through the internet and watch me whenever they want. I support to use the camera to surveille the public places, it can fundamentally control and reduce the rate of the crime. But use it to surveille people's private life is kide of misuse of power.

A school here in Fl. gave a bunch of laptop computers to schoolkids that they could take home for schoolwork. None of the kids knew that when they turned them on that the webcams came on too. They watched the kids homelife and recorded it. Finally someone realized this was going on and the schools and teachers and Superintendent all got in trouble. The kids got to keep the laptops but the disabled the webcams first. Talk about big brother. It is everywhere. I think if they had gotten away with this they would have done it all over.
