Darn that traffic cam!

Darn! I think I got caught by a traffic camera.
As I was driving to get to work this morning, I was in a bit of a rush because I wanted to get in early. It was still dark, and there was less traffic on the road so I was doing 10-clicks above the speed limit. In one of the intersections I crossed, which I could have sworn was still yellow while I was underneath the signal, I saw lights flashed in my rear view mirror.
Uggh! I guess I have to wait for the notice in the mail. And pay whatever the fine is.
Have you ever been in this situation? Isn’t it a sinking feeling? Do you have traffic cameras at where you are? Have you ever been caught and received the notice in the mail? Does it make you want to drive slower?
Could it have been just a tourist taking pictures of the sights at 5:30 in the morning?

I hate those traffic cams! I got a ticket when they firat put them in my area last year.
Mine was because I didn't wait a full three seconds before turning right on red! There was not another car in sight so I pulled up and yielded for a second and went on. Perfectly legal except I didn't count one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand
I paid the stinking fine, but I count now to at least five before I make the turn.

They sent me the pictures of the rear of my car with the ticket..lol..of me turning but it was close enought that you couldn't see the area surrounding me. It wouldn't have mattered because the law apparently says a yield is three seconds..lol. Creepy but when I count to five one thousandths..the thing never flashes. Oh..and the catch is if you fight it and lose..they report it to your insurance..if you pay the ticket...they don't report it to your insurance. I don't know if they have video or not to be honest...if they did..I wouldn't have won..I know I didn't wait three seconds.

Ohhh, I hate those stupid things they are so ridiculous and too accurate. I haven't really gotten caught running a light with those cameras but I did get caught by one of those toll way cams though. It was when I was living in Houston and got lost looking for a job then got on the express toll way and didn't' even realize it lol. Imagine my surprise when I got a ticket in the mail showing the back end of my car and charging me $40 just for not paying the $2 toll!!! I never did that again and I never went anywhere in Houston that I didn't know how to get back from lol.

well..we don't have those cams in Jabalpur yet...nor there are any strict traffic rules...there are traffic lights at some most busy 4-ways..only there people follow the rules...rest of teh city is just free from traffic rules
but tell me more about this system...how do they send u mail?....are ur mails ids filled while u fill the form?...and then what happens if someone neglects the mail...at our place its still done manually...the traffic police carries a receipt book to charge people...

They get your information when you register your car and get your insurance. The plate number registered is linked to your name. So when a car is pictured, showing the license number, then the letter is sent to the address of the person who's license it is registered.
There are advantages and disadvantages with this system though.
Thanks.

Wow, sounds cool to me ! And not cool when we receive an e-mail for the fine, LOL. Well, i don't really like driving fast unless it's an emergency. Lucky for me, we don't have such cameras installed on our highways yet. He he. Paying the fine just because you wanted to get in early sounds bad, normally the cameras take the photo of the rear number plate so most probably it was one of those traffic cameras, unfortunately.

Nope and never will! Why? Because I don't have a car! I don't know how to drive one! and even there is a running speed limit in our country there are no cameras in here that can take pictures and get your license plate number if you violate the speed limit. I guess you are from a first world country like America or Australia. I have a friend in Australia who use to be a jeepney driver here in the Philippines. He always got traffic ticket mails because he is used to drive fast. As in very fast that you eyeball can be placed at the back of your head!

Oh my, guess you have to be careful next time. Wake up early and leave home early. Use a gps that has a traffic option. It will save you a lot of time and gas. we are using it and we are avoiding the traffic jam. I think you also have to render community service if you want to lower the fine or something. My aunt was caught in traffic camera for beating the red light and she was obliged to fine and serve the community. She was also ordered to attend the driving school. Hope it was just a normal camera not for traffic.

That's what I'm hoping. That it was just a normal camera, from a tourist.
I've heard about those GPS with traffic options, but I have never seen those. I have a GPS device, but without it.
I'm sure there is a fine, but I'm crossing my fingers that it never comes in the mail.
Thanks.

I've never seen one of those cameras flash. Not all of them are even working some of them just are there for show so you never know exactly which one will catch you doing something wrong. Its been 4 months so I am wondering if you ever got the ticket in the mail that you were dreading.

We have them in my town too. They've only been here for maybe a couple years. I've had them flash a couple times when I've gone through but have never gotten a ticket in the mail. I guess they were nailing someone else. I can see how they might be of benefit in reducing the number of speeders and accidents but I don't agree with their use. There has been too much evidence that shows that they are really revenue generators rather than a device used to promote traffic safety. Also, while the number of accidents involving cars that ran red lights striking other cars entering the intersection has gone down(or so they claim) as a result of these cameras the number of rear end accidents has gone up. So, you trade one for the other it appears. I also don't like the possibility that these cameras could be used for much more extensive "surveillance." It's just one more step toward our society becoming the Big Brother nanny state Orwell wrote about in his book 1984. I can understand the need for some security but there is a fine line between independence and having the "authoritative" security that leads to totalitarian rule. Sorry if I went a little deeper into the discussion than you might have expected it to go but I see the potential for uses of these traffic cameras that goes way beyond what they were originally, supposedly intended for. Some people either can't see it or refuse to see it. Afterall, while the use of these cameras may be unprecedented the nefarious ways totalitarian governments have gained control over their people are not unprecedented. And their tactics evolve as society and technology evolves. Anyway, hopefully these "scameras" as some have called them will eventually be removed along with the corrupt politicians and people in law enforcement that support their use.

I like the term 'scameras', and I can totally see it becoming an income generating tool for traffic control or local government.
And I can see your point of these cameras promoting rear-end-accidents more. For those who have a propensity to speed through yellow lights, they might just go even faster to beat the camera which is could possibly hit the cars already at the other side. Or worse, hit pedestrians who are also trying to beat the light change.
And also, even if get too advanced in technology as a society, it is still not worth looking over your shoulder all the time.

oh man! That stinks! We have traffic cameras around here. Luckily I haven't made it close enough (going through a yellow light) to possibly get a ticket! I have seen people blow through those lights before though and I'm sure they got tickets!

I only go through yellow lights if I am sure I could get to the other side before it turns red. But like you, I've seen others who've crossed the street, and are at the middle of the intersection when the light is red already. I've seen the flashes a few times, and I'm sure they also got tickets.
Thanks.

I am very familiar with that sinking feeling. But I never got a ticket so that's a real good thing. I used to walk in Chicago and the lights would be almost blinding when someone tried to breeze through! It was fun to watch - but not fun to do!

I guess I have to contend with the sinking feeling for a few days. Until it comes in the mail. And if maybe if after a few weeks it doesn't come, then I could breath a little easier. But in the meantime, I would be very careful crossing an intersection.
Thanks.

Uh-oh!! There are many times that I have thought I was caught . . . simply because I'd catch my own driving blunder and realized I was at one of those camera intersections. And I'd sweat it because I didn't want my husband to have to find the ticket for it in the mail - we're on a tight budget as it is and I wouldn't want to have oodles of his hard earned money go out the door (I'm a stay at home mom). Well, after waiting for weeks, knock on wood, I guess the camera never caught me. But for a while I would be driving "extra" carefully . . . but then slip back and not be as cautious - til the next time it happens! Sooooo bad. I had a friend who got caught - he was behind a bus and didn't see that the light was red - he went through. He actually waved - and the camera caught that . . . he was bragging about that for weeks!

LOL, no I do not think it would be a tourist, maybe we can hope. As I can tell you that I too one day went through the yellow and I saw the flash, apparently as per the law our car has to be crossed completely over before the red appears.
It use to be that on yellow we could go, now you can but only if you are sure the entire car made it fully across. There are exceptions for turning lanes.
You will get a citation in the mail with a picture of your vehicle attached. My cost was $80.00. I suppose they do not want us speeding across as many of us do sped up when we see the yellow.

I have seen some of those citations on the net. And I have seen the pictures that come with it. The ones that clearly show that the light is already red, while you're still in the middle of the intersection.
The difficult thing about this is trying to decide if you can clear the intersection while approaching it. A split-second decision!

When we were visiting my in-laws in phoenix, I was reminded that they have speed cameras on the expressway.
Near my parents they have ones at the stoplights.
My hubby got stuck in a speed trap the other night. And the fines just went up. He owes 120.00. That is 120 we do not have right now.

lol, you pay for what you did! Always slow down before a traffic light and you could change a fate! It might sound stupid enough for me to say like that, but till you faced something unpredictable, unfortunate, or something like that happened to someone you loved, you will never doubt my words anymore.
Always be cautious in driving. You may be very confident in your driving skills and your road awareness, but this doesn't always apply to drivers/people around you. Accidents happen without any signs, and that is why they are called accidents.
Always obey the law, they are created to protect their people. Don't blame on the traffic cam, blame on yourself for not slowing down before traffic light.
I hope i'm not being too offensive here, just take it as a lesson for slowing down before traffic light. =)
Drive safe and happymylotting.

Hello EddySmellyFish.
No, you're right! And I appreciate that you're a bit 'offensive'. Although I always try to be careful in driving, I know that accidents are unpredictable, and that they do happen.
I hope that when other people read your response here, they will also take it as a warning to be careful.
Thanks.

Never yet, but there have been a few occasions where I would have been busted if there had been a cam...
