I have a friend, someone that I met online, who I talk to almost every sunday evening. We have met a couple of times and we have met each others families. Although we have one anothers phone numbers we don't ever ring each other, even though we could do so for free. We use Yahoo Messenger and type. We feel more comfortable that way. Do you have a friend that you chat to but don't?

i don't think that i have ever really been in this position. If i had somebodys phone number then i would like to keep in touch with them often, just to see how they are and what they are up to and things that are happening in everyday life. I like to meet people online and yet i have not got anyones phone number, if i did then i would want them to be in this country for cost reasons and also hope to at somepoint meet up and it could either be a great friendship or may even turn into a relationship.

It is great to meet new people and if we can communicate through things like skype free of charge then it is a great way of staying in touch, especially when they are based in different countries.

My hubs............with the new laws against having a phone in your ear while driving, we now text more than talk on the phone. It's quite a relief really cause I'm not constantly being interrupted with the phone ringing (he used to phone at least 10 times a day!), and can 'speak' to him while I'm on the computer without breaking the flow of what I'm doing online.

I have him trained to text only after he stops his truck, and as most of his time is spent in wait lines, it works out pretty well. lol
And yes, the peace is a treat.

I "chat" with a lot of people, but I don't talk on the phone much any more. Electronic stuff seems to have taken over...

greetings! yes, i've several friends that i chat with a lot via ym and facebook, but due to the distance between us, it's the only cost-efficient way to communicate. although there are times that you just want to hear their voice, which is what i did this morning. i chatted with a friend last night, and i just had to call him :)

I also prefer to have the text chat because when I need to have a voice chat, at least I have to focus on it. It is not proper to let others to hear I do something else at the same time. When I have a text chat, I can also do something and I won't waste the time.
I love China

Hi. P1kef1sh. Yes. I do, I have a friend that I can chat with. She gave me her IM and, I still don't contact her. I usually will forget to do so anyway. A guy friend of mines wanted to chat with me. He asked me for my telephone number. And he wants to text with me. I don't feel so comfortable chatting with him in this way.

I hate talking on the phone with most people, period. I've always been like that. I was always more of a letter writer. So when emailing came along, it was GREAT to say the least. I do like instant messaging, but I don't necessarily have the block of time to "chat" with someone for a deep conversation - so for me, emailing is still the way to go. I am an avid Facebook user - and the little bits of communicating that goes on with the comments and such has been good enough for me too. I'm actually this way with all my friends . . . and I like typing and reading on my own time.

Yeah, I have several friends whom I talk to online, but no where else. I think it would be weird to have a phone conversation with them because there might be awkward silences. At least when you are chatting with someone online you can stop chatting for a while and it doesn't get weird. You're both doing other things while you're chatting like surfing the internet or talking to other people. It's a more casual form of communication and I sometimes prefer it. Plus you can send links which are really cool.

I don't think so because i use all forms of communication technology to communicate as per its circumstances. Yes i prefer Calling from my mobile.

I prefer to type anyway. It's easier that way I think. If you run out of stuff to say, you get awkward silences and things on the 'phone but it doesn't matter if you're typing and, I think, people feel more free and less restricted about things they can type which is strange really because things can be more easily misconstrued if you can't see or hear a person. I tend not to chat with many people at all in any way but would be more inclined to do so by email or letter rather than actually speaking to someone. Although there are one or two people I would prefer to call.

lol...yes. They are 2 that I met online and though I have their phone numbers, I feel more comfortable chatting online than calling.
I have a few of my classmates in the same city that I stay in and we find it easier to text everyday than to pick up the phone and chat. If you ask me, it's mostly because except for two of us, the others work outside the home and I wouldn't know when they are free to chat. I also find that I get to talk a lot more on chat than the phone :P and I'm not distracted with the ruckus my kids make when I am on chat...but when I'm on the phone, my face would be a myriad of expressions trying to shush them.

When I first met hubby online way back in 2003 our preferred method of conversation was via Yahoo Messenger, as I lived in Blackpool with my parents, and he lived in Carlisle, where I've ended up lol. We typed at work so it was natural for us to do this.

Presumably typing at work was easier than talking too. Kept the boss at bay! I love both Blackpool and Carlisle. I had friends in Thornton Clevelys and used to visit often. Carlisle has a wonderful cathedral. If you havdn't been you should . Just go admire the architecture and history. Make me feel that it's time for a northern road trip again!

I love talking to friends and family via email. My only problem is with people who say, "I have email now", but never check it. I get excited when a friend or family member finally gets on facebook and sends me a friend request, but never goes into facebook. My sisters husband even set their home voice mail up so they could get messages through their computer. She never knew how to retrieve her messages! It's a case of the "I haves". At least that's what I call it. I explain it to them like this. You have a mail box, do you check it? If you didn't you wouldn't really be getting mail, would you?

Hi! In our changing time and hi-technology i can say many of my friends now also prefers to type online using ym or mostly known as yahoo messenger. With the busy schedule they are imposing to me every time i want to meet or call them, they always want if you see their status available online or else you don't like to pm them because it says not online or very busy at work. I just wish they allow sometime to talk or chat using old techs. Happy mylotting!

It's really strange how i can talk to my friend about so many things while typing, but the moment we hear each other's voice, we seemed to be at a lost for words.
Yes i do the same thing as you do and somehow i find it more comfortable than talking to that friend. Maybe our brain functions well when we are typing rather than using the voice that was given to us haaha!.
