Remarkable! Awe inspiring. What a blessed moment it was to have had a visit from a Great White Snowy Owl.
The size was enormous. It's wing span six feet easy. Snowing white, as if it were glowing.
I heard my dog woof, woof. I was asleep. Then she woofed again. I woke up to my dog growling and snorting. Clearly awakened from her puppy dog sleep and startled. I heard the loud screeching. Upon waking my dog was sitting, ears perked starring out the bedroom window.
I could see an outline of a bright white image so I got up to get my glasses.
When I returned, my dog began a rolling bark. Distressed from this nocturnal visitor. I crawled back into bed and my pup came to snuggled close, laying on her belly still starring out the window, ears perked.
As we watched, together, my dog began giving me slow gentle kisses on my hands and face. Clearly happy that I was there to comfort her, at a time that she was obviously scared.
Perhaps dogs know intuitively, what are the predators.
Five O'clock in the morning and dark, we watched together, the owl occasionally letting out a loud screeching sound.
Suddenly the head of the owl turned and it flew off. Once in flight, the owl was much larger than I expected.
What a beautiful morning it was, having such a majestic visitor.
Even my Mom at 72 and from the interior, has never seen a white owl.
I can not help but feel privileged.
Mythology of the White Owl
Naturally I am going to wonder what, if any the significance was. I began reading myths of the white owl, finding some contradicting information. Some say this and others say that.
When I told a friend of mine what I had seen, she immediately said "Oh that is a good Omen".
I sure hope so as the night previous was fabulous! Good things happening.
So I continued to research and read more.
In mythology, I understand that being visited by a white owl can also indicate money and wealth, a guide through the underworld, sign of warning - not necessarily death, good omens, good luck, symbol of magic and more.
Have you ever seen a white owl? What are your beliefs if any, what a visit from a white owl may mean in mythical terms?
I have read of the doom and gloom, death and bad luck but I am also read otherwise too. For myself, I like to think, as it felt a good omen, for sure.
What a sight to behold! Absolutely beautiful!

when we see some creature that we have never seen just by chance it is an amazing experience. About 2 years ago I was driving by the coast and my DIL just let out a yell to stop the car. I pulled over and we saw a school of Manatees. We stood there in awe as we have never seen the creature before and they have these little 'arms' that are waving around. I cannot remember the correct name. They were huge and I will never forget seeing them. An experience in a lifetime. I am so happy that you witnessed seeing this ow. I have only seen a small owl out here but that was thrilling too. I would have loved to have seen the owl.

A Once in a Lifetime sort of thing, for sure as there are many people who have never been so blessed to witness such a magnificent sight. I am unsure what a "Manatee" is but I feel your awe.
perhaps other MyLotters could shed a bit more light on those creatures ..
Personally, I doubt that it will be any time soon when I fail to recall this extraordinary experience. Absolutely breath taking!

I am sorry for not being more specific. In the long ago times they were thought to be mermaids by sailors who saw them at a distance on rocks. They are truly magnificent but like so many other creatures are becoming scarce in the world. It looked like they were just waving to us and then they would raise their bodies out of the water- wonderful.

A white snowy owl! Hedwig! Wow, that is so awsome! Mythology aside, I think being visited by a white owl is very rewarding. Not a lot of people get to see them, and especially now that some animals around the world are getting endangered, it's nice to see them once in a while. Such luck!

I agree Such Luck indeed. Regardless of omen, good or bad, I still feel so privileged and honored to have had this amazing experience.
The sight was something! Breath taking to say the least. An amazing animal to see so close, even in the darkness of night, even though it was 5am, it was still dark but the Owl glowed he was so White! and uge. At least sic foot wing span when the Owl flew away.

Awesome! I think I've seen only one owl, a brown one and seemingly injured. My aunt nursed it and flew away when it got well. They're indeed amazing!

I never see one. but what you wrote sounds similar to my understanding of what owl's message is. not sure if it's different, black or white owl. but I can feel you are a gentle caring soul, I believe you know what the visit means.
I love owls. I think they are cute with cute big eyes.

How incredibly spectacular! You are so lucky to have seen an owl! We have owls here, but they are rare and I've only seen the dark outline of one once in 6 years as it swooped past us one late summer night.
What an amazing experience for you!

It was just the most awesome ting ever, let me tell you.
In fact it was so amazing that I have a hard time finding words that can express the magnitude of the experience. Just absolutely spectacular. For sure.
One of the Most Beautiful Creatures I have ever seen and huge. Six feet wing span, easy.
Glowing white in the darkness of the early morning. The screeching was loud. It woke my pup and scared her like I have never seen her scared before. None the less it was a truly blessed experience.

Oh, that is so awesome EvrWonder, I love seeing wild life and that is what I believe the white owl is, another part of G&hearts'd creation. I can only imagine what it was like to see this creature; I have only seen the brown/grey owls, never seen a white one before. I am sure he was beautiful and well as magnificent to watch..

If you could video tape it, it would be something I'd love to see, even if it isn't in real life for me, it is for someone I know and that is close enough..:)

Wow, what a wonderful experience! Unfortunately, where I live, there aren't any owls flying about. I don't really believe much in omens, but having been given the chance to have seen such a wonderful creature sort of up close is something like a once in a lifetime opportunity.
... And it'd be great if it had an envelope containing an invitation letter to a certain wizardry school too.

Lol. Well it was one of those Once in a Lifetime opportunities. I must agree.
It would be awesome to see the Owl once again but I will not soon forget the magnificent sight of this beautiful glowing white Owl. So Huge too. At least a six foot wing span when the Owl flew away.
Glowing in the Dark of the early morning hours and a screech loud enough to wak and startle my pup.
It was quite the experience I must say. I still feel so privledged to have had such a majestic visitor.

Oh, I think it has to be a GOOD omen, but then I do not believe in bad omens. We have some little light colored owls in the trees hereabouts and my neighbor loves them much more than I do. We were standing under one tree and she kept saying come closer and see the owl, and I stayed back saying I could see it well enough from there. I told her the owl was going to drop something on her. Well, it did, too! We were on the way somewhere and she had to go back home and wash her blouse.
I am not too often awake at 5 a.m. Not any more. But our owls come out in the evening. Our owls are little, but so are the dogs in my neighborhood, so the dogs had better watch out. I wish the owls would eat a few of the ground squirrels we have around here! They are ratty looking and dig holes everywhere and eat every plant in people's gardens. They ate my tomatoes and peppers and even the grape vine.

The squirrels can be a nuisance to our gardens, I know. In fact I suspect that the Owl was here to hunt for them since we have many around here as well.
I found it quite amazing as to the timing of this visit, being 5 a.m. as appose to in the evening hours. It did not matter. The sight was so magnificent and the experience in itself is one I will not soon forget. I still feel privileged by such a wonderful encounter.
The owl sure scared my little dog though. She woke right up, I suspect from the sound of the loud screeching. My dog was snorting and barking. Clearly distraught, working to wake me, with all her might. Poor little thing.
Such a majestic visitor, the Great White Snowy Owl.
I shall keep my eyes alert should the owl return.
In the meanwhile, there are a pair of brown owls near where our cows are. They nest in the trees. I see them during the day, late afternoon and again, I must protect my small dog from them as well.
Maybe not as mighty as the Snowy White Owl but still so beautiful to see.

I don't know if it is a good omen or not but if it feels that way then I would hold it close and let it be one.
I bet it was amazing to see a white snow owl. I have seen a barn owl but that has been as close as I have been. I was just scared he was going to take my little dogs.
I love the way you have researched it and found out such interesting things. Awesome that you have experienced it! If you see that owl again...tell him you have a friend that could use a good omen or two as well.
I'd love to see one.

IT was a great experience indeed.
I have not seen the white owl again but I did hear a similar screech the next night as I was heading out of the building, but on the opposite side of where I seen the owl the night before. I suspect the Owl is hunting perhaps.
IT was an amazing sight Jen! Huge, at least six feet wing span when he flew off.
I suspect that it was a Good Omen and prefer to think so as well.
I would be frightened that even a barn owl may tend to look at my small dog and think snack as well. I am very careful with my pup out in the open. In fact for the next few days she was on a leash constant.
I keep her close by. We have many eagles as well Bald headed ones. Those too can prey on the small dogs. Always having to keep an eye out for them and the other eye on the dog.
Yes, it was a thrilling experience to say the least. I would love to see the Owl again and if I do I will suggest that the Owl spend a visit with you as well.
