Dried Fruits

Am I getting less nutrients for eating dried fruits as opposed to fresh ones? I've been "snacking" on dried fruits for weeks just for the heck of it but I'm worried that I'm just loading in lots of sugar for nothing. I did see "antioxidants" and some other stuff in the dried fruits packets but I am not so sure if what they are claiming is true or not. Are dried fruits really beneficial for the health or should I stick with raw, fresh fruits?

Hi Ink! I guess it would depend on how they were dried. If it is vacuumed (did i spell it right? perhaps my nephews can tell me ugh) fresh, then i guess it would be just as nutritious. but if it is has many sugar or salt powder around uh oh... better cut it out.

Dried fruits are beneficial for fiber, and some minerals like potasium, but most vitamins are lost. There may very well be antioxidants in the dried fruit (especially berrie), but you will get more from the fresh. Also they are more sugary than fresh fruits since they've been concentrated.

Fresh fruit is definitely the way to go but if you can't get them then the dried is the way to go. I know grapes are made into raisins and they have alot of iron in them I would think that drying them right away seals in the nutrients. You would really have to see how the fruit is dried.

Dried fruit isn't nearly as good as the "real" thing (meaning fresh fruit.) I sometimes eat dried fruit just to switch things up a bit, but I definitely don't replace fresh fruit totally with dried.

I guess I'm going to be the person that goes against the grain on this one. I really don't think that there are a lot of health benefits of eating dried fruit that are lost from eating that instead of fresh fruit if it has been dried in a food dehydrator. In fact, we do that a lot with our fruit to naturally preserve it. However, if you are buying things that have been predried and that you don't know the method behind it, it probably has some preservatives and also some added sugar and that wouldn't be as good for you.

Fresh fruits are better than dried ones because the processed dried fruits already contains preservatives when the juice are squeezed from the fruit. So aside from getting a lot of sugar from it, you may also get the preservatives and other additives. Take note that some of these ingredients when accumulated in the body may pose harmful effect. So, I guess you better have fresh fruits this times...

Dried fruits are good sources of plant proteins, carbohydrates and dietary fiber, as well as small amounts of Vitamin C, most B vitamins and minerals. Of course, it depends on which kind of fruit you're eating. Nutrient values of dried fruit varies, just like fresh fruit. Also, most dried fruit has added sulfur to help keep the colors bright and sulfur destroys Vitamin D and B1, I think it is. It's not bad for you to eat a lot of dried fruits, but it's better to eat fresh ones, if they're truly fresh. Much of our food in the grocery stores is not as fresh as it looks.
