Now there are plethora of healing pracctices around the world under the caption complementary and alternative medicine. What is their effectiveness? Are they a threat to main stream medicine? It remains to be seen.

I prefer the term complementary medicine because that's what they are 'complementary'. They are meant tocomplement mainstream medicine and not act as a threat. Unfortunately the term alternative medicine communicates it as an alternative to mainstream medicine.
In order for any complementary therapy to be effective, it requires the involvement of the person being healed. I am a reiki practitioner, so maybe im biased to it....however although I have found reiki to work wonders, I would never replace mainstream medicine for it. It works alongside traditional medicine. That's the beauty of it.
