When dating when is the right time to have the "talk" about commitment?

Being newly single for the first time in over a decade, is there a certain etiquette to dating? When you talk to someone every day and you are hanging out on a regular basis, when is the proper time to discuss your relationship status? I apparently am not up on the whole dating scene as I just got burned. I talked to someone literally every day all day for months, we saw each other several times, went out, had plans one night and the next thing I know he is with someone else. I obviously thought the relationship was headed in a different direction, so when is it the right time to discuss where things are going?
