Why do you flash your brights?

As I was driving home from some errands this morning I saw a squad car parked waiting for a "victim" as I drove further down the road I instinctivly flashed my brights to the on coming car to let them know of the squad. Then I thought to myself does anyone really do this anymore? I know in some places it's considered a part of road rage. So I thought I would ask if you flash your brights to warn drivers of a squad? accident? or any other reason?

No, I tend not to. If you're speeding, you deserve to get pulled over. I usually end up freaked out when someone flashes their lights at me. I think "Are my lights on? Yes.. then what's going on? Is there a murderer in my back seat they're trying to warn me about or something.. or are they one of those gangs that's going to chase me down and kill me if I flash them back?" I know, those are urban legends, but still it's freaky!

Not all of it is urban legend. Murderer in the back seat, yes, but one summer fairly recently there were warnings that we should not flash because of gang activity. I think that is when I quit doing it much at all.

I had not heard about it having anything to do with gang activity. The only time I guess is like when Kat said if my light was out or something else appeared wrong if I didn't see a cop.

I think it started as an urban legend, and some kids try to recreate it. I saw both scenarios in a movie aptly called "Urban Legend".

Oh goodness..I do it all the time so someone doesn't get a ticket. I am in Alabama and I see it done often. Come to think about it, I think I would be upset if someone didn't warn me of police ahead by flashing their bright lights at me. I guess I look at it as a common curiosity. I just wonder does the police know this takes place ? lol

I'm sure the pd know. I'm sure they know about the apps that are available on phones that have internet access that let people know of their speed traps.

In some places it is considered gang sign. I only flash if oncoming traffic has on their brights and I want them to dim them. In the eighties they did a lot of flashing to warn of speed traps. It was more common to over the road truckers.

I've never heard of it having anything to do with gangs. But I suppose it could... you never know. I would think they truckers wouldn't want a ticket anymore than anyone else. Thought is one particular spot is tricky because it goes from 45 to 25 and it's on a hill down tward the 25 so if you are even just coasting down and letting momentum carry you (to save gas) knowing it's 25 ahead you'd probably be speeding.

I do not know if this is road rage. I would approve of someone flashing their lights to warn that there is an accident or there is a road block because of a road being out, a bridge washed out et.c I would not like someone who flashes their lights to warn someone who is speeding to slow down.

When a semi passes me, I flash to him to let him know that he has cleared the front of my car and it is safe to pull back into my lane. It is a courtesy.

hi even the Ca highway patrol does that to warn you of road hazard ahead and once our taillights and headlights went out.this highway patrol man flashed stopped us, my husband told him something in the wiring must have gone out so he pulled ahead of us and helped us to see to get to the closest service station on a tricky winding road. I have high regard for the chippies as we call them here they are accommodating and courteous and not at all like some police are.

You are right many cops probably would of written you a ticket and sent you on your way. On a winding road and no lights at night that was a formula for disaster, thankfully a kind cop came to your aid.

to avoid getting a ticket obey the speed limit all the time driving too fast is dangerous will cause an accident

Yea, it never hurts to give somebody a chance. If people still used CB radios they would be talking about the location of the smokey.

I still see people flash their lights in order to warn oncomers there is a cop nearby. I live near a road that has a 40mph speed limit. But this road, you'd swear it would be a 50 mph speed limit. It just feels like that, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I always know not to speed there because there is always a cop nearby (I warn my dad every time he's coming by my apartment). If it keeps people from having accidents, then that's great. I'm just wondering when people who travel this road often like I do, are going to learn their lesson. A week ago I saw a car pulled over, and a cop was issuing a speeding ticket. Two days later, I saw the same car (also same driver) pulled over again! This time it was a different cop. They didn't learn their lesson at all.

I used to do this, but I don't anymore. Why should I slow someone down with my bright lights, when they shouldn't be driving that fast in the first place?

I do it too when I remember. I appreciate when others let me know too.

To be honest I do not believe anyone around me, including me does this at all. I think here in this big city most of us are so busy trying to get to where we are going that no takes a moment to do this. The only time really I have seen and or done this myself is when it is way too dark on the expressway and or someone does not have their lights on, as a reminder they need to turn them on.

i dont personally but i have seen people flash to let other drivers know the police are around. i do sometimes wonder why people are flashing then i spot the police car.

hi snuggle, I allways flash my brights when i see a cop in one of there speed traps. I've had people flash me quit a bit when i'm out cruisin so the answer to your question is yes... at least they do where i live and i appreciate it. i also have a pretty good laser detector in my vehicle so i know if i'm coming up on an accident or a cop.

I flash my brights to warn on coming drivers of a cop. I have had people flash their brights to warn me as well. I have seen people use their brights as road rage. For example, I was driving to work one morning on the highway and I was in the "fast lane". I was going over the posted speed limit and some one was tail gating me big time and then started flashing their brights behind me. I have seen people do this down town as well (like we can really go any faster).

I don't see this done that often. It's almost as if it's a rarity in our area. The only time here lately that I get flashed is if I have my brights on to long. I've done it on occassion, but not that often. It's only because it's a pain in the butt sometimes playing with my lights. It's not easy turning my brights on and off quickly.

We don't do this in Indonesia. Sometimes if someone really cares he/she will slow down his/ her car and shouted to any drivers passing by that there are some police squad (razia - we call it) waiting along the road.

I first learned about the flashing lights business when I was riding in the car with my dad. We were driving down a back road and a car that was passing us flashed their lights. This was a few months back so yes, it is still happening. I normally only flash my lights to let people know their brights are on, but other than that I haven't been able to let someone know of a squad car. I would like to help them out though.

yes I still do this , but I was told that in some states that is illegal if the cops see you do this , but yeah I will flash my brights for the on coming traffic to slow down for an accident , and different things like that . Also back in the urban myths they said if you were driving at night and an on coming car had his brights on and you flashed them they would turn around and follow you , and try and run you off the road. I will flash my lights for a tractor trailer also when they are passing and give them the sign to pull back in saying that they are safe.
