Did you go to your high school prom? Did you think it was a waste?

I did not go to my highschool prom?
Why? Mainly because our prom was held at the ZOO! Yes, the ZOO. I love the Zoo and stuff because I had a yearly pass with my boyfriend but out of all places, it isn't really romantic, the smell stays on your clothes and it's more of a tourist spot. Everyone has been to the Zoo before... and another reason the tickets were like $75-100 each meaning my boyfriend and I would be like $200, then you have to go out to eat {recommended}, buy a dress/tux.. I rather save the money and take a day cruise with a 3 course meal. It'd be better in my opinion.
How was your prom?

In my home country there's no such a thing as a prom. I always thought it was something taken out from North-american movies, but not as a real thing, to tell you the truth
That's why I only know the image from movies, but sounds pretty awful. The ugly dress, having to get a boyfriend in highschool -there were nothing but fugs in my highschool-, the miss and mister contest, the boring music... I hope it's like that only in movies, because I never want to experience something as stupid as that.
By the way, your highschool sounds pretty awesome. At the zoo!

Can i ask what school you're in?.. that's sound strange huh!.. A prom in the ZOO. It may not sound romantic but I'm sure it's gonna be a hell of experience.. It can still exciting depends on your company. It can be fun, still if you're not wearing gowns or tux.. Prom is definitely not a waste of time, it's an experience that you can treasure for the rest, that you can eventually share with your future daughter or son. I can still remember the excitement of choosing gowns and the right accessories. I'm sure that it will be the same experience with you, if you're school choose the more appropriate location.. hehe

That was back in highschool, grade 12. I am now in college. It is weird.. and you do wear a tux & dress if you go to prom.
I did purchase a prom dress, just didn't go :)

I seem to be the only one who had enjoyed my prom in here. It was fun thing because we got to party from 6pm tp 6am the next day, and when morning came we were all worn out walking barefoot carrying our high-heeled shoes. That was the policy of the school, the prom would last all night long and nobody could go out unless fetched by parents. So it was quite fun when the dance music would be stopped every now and then to make announcements like "John Smith, your mom is waiting for you at the gate."
My prom was not a formal thing. It was a party and it was not costly since I went to a public school and collecting money from public school students for any purpose was against the law. I was in the student council and got budget for the prom through sponsorships. Before our prom, there had not been such an event in the school for two years due to lack of budget. But we really wanted to have a prom so we made it happen.
So maybe that was why it was great for me---knowing I was one of the people who pulled it off and made the 800 plus senior students have a blast one last time before graduating.

Do you mean 12 midnight-1am (which is just an hour) or 12 noon-1am? Who holds prom at noon time?

Hi,
It does seem like you enjoyed prom! Our prom was more like until 12-1am then there was an after prom somewhere corny... I forgot where but it was lame from what I heard. And what that sucks.. see I rather party outside of school and it was on a weekend! (well our prom was)
I went to a public school too and we had to pay for tickets.
Thanks for sharing & glad you had a good time!

A zoo? Were they trying to go for an exotic theme or something? That's a very strange choice. I actually did not attend my high school prom or another other dances during my school days. I was never one for those kind of things and I'm still not. Plus, it was expensive and I had better things to spend my money on, I think the tickets were $25 a person and then you have to factor in dresses, dinner and other things. I wasn't made of money nor were my parents back in those days and it didn't feel right asking them to shell out an outrageous amount just for prom. A lot of my friends didn't go either so we ended up getting together at my house and having our own little party which was a lot of fun.

Yup, the Zoo! That is a strange choice, definitely ............ not a prom I'd want, it's not even like a fairy tail ending. I went to one school dancing and I didn't have fun. I liked the getting glam , photos but the rest was pretty boring. And, yeah the cost was expensive and not worth it. Party sounds way much better, I agree. Thanks for sharing. :)

I've never heard of a school holding prom at a zoo. I didn't go to mine because I was depressed at the time and didn't want to be around anyone, even though a couple of my friends went and really wanted me to go. I didn't go to my graduation too, but that was also because I graduated 5 months early and saw it to be pointless to have to give back in my diploma just so I could walk and they could hand it back to me.
People always say you will regret not going to your prom, and honestly I do... especially after hearing about your experience, because ours was actually supposed to be nice. It was on a yacht that cruised around Manhattan. I can't remember what the cost was though.

That's so funny - the zoo! Well, I did go - but looking back - it wasn't necessary, even though at the time I really really wanted to go. Back in high school, I wasn't dating - heck, I don't think any guys really "liked" me. So it would be a dream to go to prom. No one asked me to go though. My friends hooked me up with this guy who might want to take me to the prom . . . and we had a pre-prom date just to see how we'd work out - and we decided he'd take me to the prom! It was at a nice hotel - and we paid a lot of money, but we also ended up going to a college party . . . and then to the beach. But we ended up kissing (which I think it was both of our first time kissing) - and we kissed for a long time - and were missing from our group that they all thought we were off doing the wild thing for a moment there which is totally not what happened. Anyway - stupid night for me . . . I just get embarrassed thinking about it. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done things differently - including about getting a date. Or I would not have gone at all and saved all that money.

I never went to my high school prom because I did not want to waste money on a dress I'd be wearing just once. Plus we had to pay for our prom that time. I think it was P500 ($12 now but it was like $20-25 that time) and this was twenty years ago. My friends who attended the gig complained that the food was bad and they were not able to really enjoy the prom. I don't really miss it when my high school friends and I get to talk about it.

That was when I was in highschool, 3 years ago. I am now in college. Yeah, that is pretty strange - who has a prom at the zoo. I went to a public school too. I would have gone if it was somewhere nice/fancy then to get ready for the zoo though.

I also did not go to my High school prom, mainly because I never went to High school. I stayed home from High school to help my Dad on the Farm. Then after I had helped for one year I was old enough to go to College. At age 16 I enrolled in the Agricultural College at Kemptville Ont.I graduated the 2 year course in 1951, and have been a farmer ever since.

I was a shy and awkward teenager. i didn't run with the popular crowd. i was a bit of a loner and that didn't really bother me. I didn't go to the high school prom. at the time I really didn't think i was missing anything. Now that i am older, i often wonder if missing this high school experience was something I should not have missed. I don't think the prom is a waste of time. Many people look back on prom night as something very special in their lives.

Most people who responded so far didn't go to prom and didn't regret it. Out of all I've read, 1 enjoyed it :P I guess it depends on the person.
I don't regret going & it's 3 years later, thanks for sharing :)

Why the zoo?! Maybe they thought it would be more romantic if the animals are involved. I expected to get laid during my senior prom but I didn't so it sucked. We spent more than enough for the post-celebration just to get the girls too drunk but they were fetched by their parents. There were girls left but I'd rather go home and sleep than get with those.

OMG!AT THE ZOO LOL. I don't blame you. That seem's like really strange place to have a prom but whether it's a zoo (i'm still laughing) or a ritzy hotel it doesn't matter if you went or not. I didn't go to my prom because my boyfriend was a little to old (in his twenty's)and i didn't want to put him through something that lame! I didn't have the money to spend on a fancy dress that i would never wear again and the ticket price etc...... From what i found out from some friends, i didn't miss much. I had waaaaay more fun hanging out with my boyfriend (now my hubbie)anyway.

Hi! I attended our high prom because it was like a 'compulsory' activity. At first, it felt exciting because we had to prepare for our clothes and try to look at our best. However, buying a dress and having your make up and hair done means money, so I guess that's one downside of high school proms. Personally, I didn't enjoy the prom because I'm not usually the social type. Proms are limited to dancing, eating, or selecting the most beautiful and the most handsome.

No, I didn't go to my prom. I went to 4 different high schools, so I didn't really have a large group of friends, much less many that were going. I would have liked to go- it's something that I'd looked forward to since I was little- but my high school years were basically taken away from me for various reasons... anyway. I didn't feel a PART of my high school, that's why I didn't go. Do I regret it? Sort of. I wish my HS years had been more enjoyable and consistent, but stuff happens, you know. I'm in college now... I try not to think about it.

I am in college now too, going on my third but yeah in your position.. I guess it'd be different. I'm sorry you had to go to all sorts of colleges. :( I had a group of friends but most of us didn't really go just because we didn't want to. Thanks for sharing.. As you can see most of the people that commented so far didn't go/nor cared to go so you're not alone.

I went to my senior prom. It was okay. I wasn't comfortable enough to dance up on the dance floor so we spent most the night sitting at the table talking. I don't remember how much the tickets cost or anything like that. I went with my highschool boyfriend. I wish I had known that another boy had a crush on me for awhile, because I ended up marrying him lol.

That's weird, but I wouldn't go just because well I never went to my high school prom because it was way to much money and instead I saved that money for college instead and I made the right decision because that money is coming in hand. I am always picky with my money I always make sure to spend it on things that I actually need well I do buy something for me once in a while because I want to have something nice and it's like a reward, but yeah me and money we are tight because it's hard for me to let go. Some people spend their money like nothing, but that will never be the case for me because my head is always thinking about the future and the future bills that will have. That's why I have to save right now so that I won't have a tough time down the road. Never spend money that you don't have that's the number one rule of money because if you do that it's what pretty much gets everybody into debt.
Being in debt must be horrible because than ones credit gets ruined and makes it almost impossible to repair the credit. So like when you want to buy a house or even a car they always look at ones credit score and if it's bad well they won't want you, simple as that. I want to have a good credit score so that I won't struggle. I will never use credit cards because what credit cards have is an interest fee that just keeps adding up if one does not pay it. Paying off credit card bills for the rest of my life well that's no fun. Some of my friends went to prom, but I think that my one friend she should not have gone because she should of used that money for college instead because now she does not have money for the community college and I don['t think that her parents have enough money for that because they pretty much live off of welfare.
Saving money is the way to go sure proms may seem nice well they never actually seemed nice to me because the money that goes into it well it's not in my budget, but yeah I am glad that I did not go my high school prom because then everybody was saying that it was no good and that nobody really danced so pretty much everybody that went to prom had a bad time.

A prom at the zoo?? That's the strangest location I've ever heard of for a formal dance. My prom was held at a really ritzy inn and I did go to it. Complete waste of time and money. No amazing memories, bad pictures, and a $200 dress I'll never wear again.

LOLS..ZOO!? what are they thinking? Your school should think of a romantic place rather than in a tourist spot place. And you did the right thing dear XD. You save TIME, EFFORT, MONEY and you will not experience to have a weird prom XD. Be Blessed!
