Is it a Wasted Life or Fulfillment of Individual Dreams?

Most of us have personal dreams and goals. Some of us share similar goals and others have different hopes and dreams. One example of this is the ever elusive American Dream. A house in the suburbs, a white picket fence, two cars, 2.2 children, a good job etc... Others aspire to do great things in life like make changes to social injustices, save the environment, or become leaders of their countries. On the other hand, some want a simple life living close to nature and working hard. Some people simply want to just live their life day to day in their private secluded lives. I believe we should all live life to suit our personal desires as long as we don't hurt those around us. It is a matter of choice. Some of us do not see it that way when it comes to family members and friends that seem to not aspire to our perceptions and expectations. Many people have talents and in our eyes don't seem to be doing anything positive with them. Have you ever commented about one of your family member or friends, "he could be a good doctor or lawyer" or, "she could be a good teacher or nurse"? Is it fair to judge someone based upon our perceptions of a good life? Is a talented person that is comfortable living day to day wasting their life or, is that person truly achieving his/her goals in life?

There are plenty of people like that. They are multi-talented but their talents are going to waste not because they don't wanna use it but because they can't. Most professions today require certifications like diplomas and these talented folks are limited to only what they have finished as a degree. And another thing is that's why parents should encourage their children to take the course they want and should make them realize what they really want as early as possible so their talents and interests won't go to waste.

It is true that many individuals cannot use their talents and as a result they go to waste. But how about those that don't want to use them or use them in ways that the rest of society views as wasteful. Who are we to determine if an individual's life is a waste? Perhaps the individual is happy the way he/she is. Since they are god given abilities, shouldn't we use them as we see fit and not how society decides we should?

Once upon a time I used to make those very same statements, when I was young and on the traditional path in life. As I began to study other thoughts and esoteric writings I began to realize just how unfair this judgment and assumption was to people. I've now changed my thoughts and actions with my own children and do not suggest they be "anything". I simply let them find the world on their own, and they have blossomed into the people that they are, not who I wanted them to be.

I wish everyone thought like that. Its funny, I have a cousin that earned full academic scholarship out of high school, earned a Bachelor's in Biology and a Master's in Administration. Upon finishing graduate school, she got married and became a housewife. Her mom considered it a waste. My cousin has successfully raised two beautiful children and is very happy with her decision.
