Can video games like ,,Guitar Hero" cure cancer or save the humanity from poverty?
Many experts see this games as a step back in our intelectual advance. But the real truth about computer games is slightly different.Today computer games fulfil humans needs which the real World can simply not.In fact Computer games could be the key to solve some of the most important problems in the world.
Hundreds of millions everyday spend a larger partof their freetime for this alternaive reality. To sum up we all spend 3 thousand millions hours whilst playing them for a week. In the U.S. alone there are about 183 million active gamers and the gaming industry gets 15500000000 dollars revenue from them yearly.Although the average gamer spends his time playing games up to 2 hours daily, now are over 3 millon radicals who spend more than 45 hours a week.To make a deeper impression the gamers from the world already spent 59300000 years while playing ,,World of Warcraft".
Of course these players get back to reality. They have jobs, families and real and active social lives. But as they spend endless hours playing they realise that something is missing in the real world. The world we know can not offer such excitment or thrilling challenges, strong social bonds as the virtual one.Reality is not made to maximise our potencials, or make us happy.Reality does not motivate us enough.
Those who find games as an escape from reality, will have to face certain difficulties, becouse more and more players will use this power for real things. The things that games gives us can be divided in to four groups:Makes jobs satisfactional,a real thought of sucess, strong social bonds and hope to become something more than we are.
We can achieve all of these graet things in reality, but in video games we get them all the time. This is called the inner reward. We do not play games to make money, to achieve friends or to get a better life.Reaserches from Pensilvanias,Harvards, Barkleys univeritys have shown that this inner rewards give motivation to do things in reality.
When playing a good game we feel productive.Besides we can always feel the effects in the surounding virtual world. Finally we know the importance of our participation in projects and we are then more ambitious in life.Reaserches show that people who play a guitar in ,,Guitar Hero" take the real guitar and learn how to play it.
While playing we have the feeling of optimism. We honestly believe that we can face any chalenge, we get more resilient.Reaserches have shown that 80 percent that fail at games try again. That makes them stronger to face the real chalenges.
Games help us create stronger social bonds with friends and family.Again reaserches show that our relations to others increase after playing games even if we loose. No wonder why people in ,,Facebook" play its games so much.
So with the presence of all these positive things we can use the created energy for great things to serve humanity.
In 2010 more than 57 thousand players participated in the scientific magazines ,,Nature" reasearch.Gamers with no biochemistry skills worked in a 3d space called the,,Foldit".The work was to sovle the puzle by putting virtual Proteins in new ways wjich could cure Alzheimer or cancer. The people that created the game from Washington university Believed, that players could beat the supercomputers and they were right as the people won in over the half of the games.
These examples is just a beggining of what we could do if we use the power of games trying to make the world and ourselves alittle better. Those who master this power will be the ones who will create our futures. So let's begin playing.
What do think? Im really looking forward to replies.
cheers!

I don't think video games can save the world but they can cure boredom, if you ask me. Like go your example about Alzheimer's disease, I guess it can also cure memory problems. Research also say that video games can also improve eye-hand coordination which is good for reflexes. I guess there are benefits playing video games after all which goes to show that I wasn't really wasting time back then playing video games instead of attending school. LOL

I think video games cant possibly save the world. Maybe rescue form the boredom that can happen. I also play games just to have fun, meet other players better and makes me want to beat them all.
But does every human being in need of comfort for himself. One they can do is play games, because its simple and easy thing to do.
So video games can save the world from boredem of life.

I dont really think that video games of the present gen have the capability to save the world or make its users do so. But i do think some games can instil a sense of courage or patriotism or the anger to fight against crime.
