How soon can I plant peas and early vegeatable in my garden? Can it be March and if there is snow on the ground can i still do it? How early can I grow red potatoes or white potatoes? I saw on tv channel 12 you can real potoates you get in the bags and plant them and you will get more because they splinter off! Sounds cool but does it really work?
Thanks and have a great day!

How soon you can plant depends on where you are. Here, the ground is frozen and will probably be frozen for another three months. Peas and other early vegetables (lettuce, radishes, spinach, etc.) can be planted "as soon as the ground can be worked," in other words, as soon as the ground is thawed and reasonably warm. I've found that peas and other seeds won't germinate well when the temperature is cold, no matter what they say. I wouldn't plant if there was still snow on the ground.
I don't understand or know enough about the potato question, so I can't help you there.

Hello peavey,
Thanks for the reply and help here on spring planting. I still waiting for my snow to diappear for good but they are calling for more snow. I guess come March I will start inside to grow my plants. My boyfreind got a mini autrium which he has in the basement which includes lights and all and starting his planting already. it is pretty amazing see them grow.
Thanks and here to Spring planting soon!

peavey gave you some great answers! As soon as the ground can be worked, I plant peas, sweet peas, beans of all forms, kales, spinachs & all members of that family, and radishes. I mix the radish seeds in with the kale & spinach, as they are the first to sprout, they mark the rows, and you aerate and loosen the soil when you harvest them..as they are a short lived crop.
For all forms of potatoes...the soil must pass the "trou" test..LOL!!! That means you can sit quite comfortably on the soil without your trousers on!! One large potato can yield many seeds..chop the potato up INCLUDING an eye with each portion. The eye is whence the new plant comes from.
I have nearly 900 Garlic plants that I put in last October, up nearly 6 inches. Love my Garlic...and love to share it. It will be another 2 months before we can plant on the West Coast of B.C., lower mainland. Looking forward...ah, Spring!

Hello pergammano,
I agree with everything you said here except the potoaes they said on TV not to chop them when you plant just plant them whole because the bugs will get to chop ones because they smell the juice or wetness of them.
I am reall curious to see if this works in my garden the potaotes. I think I will try this after last frost or when I plant my tomaotes. I live in penna. near philadelphia so I so months to go get.
Question though I have a big plantern and fill it potting soil could I plant potatoes in that as long as the basement is warm?
Thanks for all the ideas from both of you.
Have a great day!
