As a medical student, I'm supposed to be professional in medicine, and my family and my friends ask me something about their health problems sometimes. Usually I can't answer them, of which makes me quite ashamed. I know there are lots for me to learn about, but I don't know where to start. Could any one do me a favour?

Most of the student face this problem at the beginning. Believe me this is perfectly normal. You feel like you have a lot to learn and that realization, my friend, is the essence of all learnings. At least, you have a good estimate of the depth and vastness of your field. You are going to be a medical practitioner so it is quite natural that people around you will have lots of expectations. Medical science is a very practical subject. This means, it is a subject that you can apply in your own every day life. If you can't do that that means you have a fundamental deficiency in your approach. You are studying but you are not relating all those things to your everyday life. When people first study psychology some of them begin to get the impression that they are the patient themselves and that they have some acute diseases. This happens because whatever they learn they relate it to themselves and to all the persons around them. You need to do exactly the same thing. Don't just study. Learn. Go beyond mastery. If you don't know where to start from, then start with something that you find most interesting. The subject itself will do the rest. Equip yourself in such a way that whenever you are asked for a solution to some practical problems you immediately follow the three logical steps - observation, deduction and conclusion - almost spontaneously and instinctively.

I will take note to that three logical steps as a tip from you. Its hard to relate things when talking about medical subjects for it connotes sickness better not empathizing but rather sympathy.

Hello watson, Dont worry too much on things that you cant answer at this time. You are yet a student and this shows your are concern and that really proves your eagerness and has the enthusiasm to learn and be a specialist in your chosen medical field. No need to be ashamed for every unanswered questions but rather make each as a motivation for your query and start from there for your personal studies for human anatomy is interconnected. finish your study first and then pass the board and that time you'll be a professional in your field.

i think there is nothing to be ashamed of, because when a question is posted to us and we can't find an answer instantly then we should do our research. this is how i do it but u can use different concept. u said u don't kno where to start and that is because u have not build your own concept of learning. so the next time a question is posted at you and you cant answer, go and do a little research and give the answer, it dont have to be 100% accurate but at least u made an effort to find out. this is how everything operate, before u can diagnose a problem u have to do test to make sure the diagnosis is accurate, similarly when we are asked a question and we cant give an answer we do the research, the research is the test in this case and the answer is the diagnosis...happy mylotting

You said your a medical student so how can you be a professional in medicine? Your not a professional until you have finished your studies and had some practice and earned your credentials. As a student of medicine you can only comment of what you have learned up to a particular point in your studies and you know you should not be giving a diagnosis if your not a doctor so there really is no reason to feel ashamed. I would answer, "sorry, I haven't leaned that yet." I don't really understand your question about where to start since as a medical student your at the place you ought to be.
