It's about university and college, What's the difference?
Here in Ecuador where I live, people go to the university after they study high school, but I don't know what is college.
Is the same college than university, here in Ecuador, there's no college, there's just high school and then university.
Can you please explain me what is the difference. Thanks for helping.

hi,
for me, my opinion about this is the college is only have limited colleges,or just a building only, while university is more wide and have many options of colleges, many building and every building have there own college name. i think thats the differences between college and university.

A college is an educational institution where only one subject is taught. A univeristy has a number of different colleges, each teaching a specific subject. A college requires fewer electives and focuses on that one subject. A university requires more elective from a wide range of different colleges before the student focuses on that one area of study.
That was the original difference. Today, the term college and university have become more blurred. Colleges now teach a number of difference subjects and require a lot of electives just as universities do. Universities seek to have students wide general education.

University is much bigger than just a mere college because it has more courses and it has complied with requirements of schools that should be given university status. When you say you study in a university that means you are in a bigger and more popular school. A college only has limited courses and the student population is just small.

In Indonesia, we have to study at elementary school for 6 years after kindergarten. Then we go to Junior High School for three years. Graduated from Junior High School we can go to practical school to study tourism, computer, designer, etc. Or we can go to Senior High School - another three years. After this, we can go to practical school or university.
So, I guess college is kind of a practical school after Senior High School. Graduated ro here you can either find a job and continue to study at University.

Hi,
your question is just a function of country/State. Here in Nigeria, we have Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges. Colleges here gives you a diploma certificate which will enable you further your education either in a university or polytechnics where you will obtain a higher certificates(Bachelor degree)

Hi! I think it depends on the country. In my country, there is no difference between a college and a university. Both offer the usual 4-year degree courses. However, in some countries, there is a difference. A university seems to offer a higher level or degree of learning. The courses take 4 years to finish. On the other hand, a college offers 2-year courses.

To answer your question, the difference between college and university depend very much upon where you live. Like here in the US, the college refers to a four year advanced education only, and an institution which does not have the accreditation to offer more than than a bachelors degree. College may also be restricted by its modifiers. For example, a technical college may offer Associate of Arts degrees or certification in certain fields only. A Junior college or community college also offers a variety of A.A. Degrees and certification programs. Traditionally, the term college applied to a part of university. Large Universities may be split into colleges or departments that offer different degrees. In a sense, the university unified different colleges. The one at University of California, Berkley, for instance, has a colleges of music, law, and liberal arts, to name a few. Deans or heads of the college oversee each college, but the ability to grant degrees is through the overhead university.

Colleges are smaller, they are 2-years, have less variety in classes, you typically just go there to get your generals and then transfer to a 4-year University. Sometimes colleges are like technical schools, which are usually for people who want to do a shorter, non-traditional program to go into something specific like nursing, massage therapist, computers, etc. It is common for older people who have graduated highschool, but didn't go directly to higher education to go to this type of school. For example, if my parents decided to go back to school right now. Colleges are less expensive as well and are usually considered less prestige.
So yes a universities is 4-years, but can go further with graduates if they are going into something like medicine, for example.
Sorry if I'm not very good at explaining.

It is really difficult to draw any such boundaries. It depends on the educational system in a particular country. It depends on the division made by the government to maintain transparency and accountability. In India you go to school up to 10th grade. After that you can either choose to leave high school and get admission in some college or you can stay in high school for 2 more years. After you pass your 12th grade examination you need to choose a college for graduation. Then once you graduate from there you can go to University for post graduation. Now all colleges here must function according to the rules set by some universities. Different universities have different colleges under them. However, there may be some autonomous colleges. An autonomous status is usually awarded observing the size and popularity of a college. This is educational system that we have in India. Every college, universities and schools will follow rules that are more or less the same everywhere within the country. In the US students go to medical schools to be medical practitioners, but in India they should go to medical colleges which has wider scope than high schools. Sometimes I think the difference is only in names and the way we divide the whole system. The ultimate objective is always the same.

In a wide sense, a University is a mainstream to which the colleges are affiliated. Colleges can conduct the legitimate courses which are sanctioned by its university. University decides the dates of exams, composes question papers corrects them and issues the degrees and diplomas signed by the Chancellor . University has the monopoly to compose the curriculum and the syllabus. A college can be a pre- university or it may conduct the degree courses sanctioned by the University. The University conducts all the courses at the same campus or outside campus but directed and supervised by the University. The college courses are narrow, they are directed and supervised by the management and the Principal/ Dean of the respective college. The university has the authority to inspect the courses conducted by the college which is affiliated to it.

In my country, university has a higher level than college. After high school, we'll make exams to go to university. If we can't pass them, we can choose college. We also make exams, of course. Besides, we could choose other education methods such as apprentice or studying as a middle-ranking school.
Only has university in your country,so what will you do if you can't pass the exam to go to it?

There is a huge difference between a college and a university, when you say college they only offer specific courses wherein a university it composes of colleges and offers different courses like college of engineering, college of nursing etc. But I think that it also depends on the country that you are in.

I had the same doubt before and I am now can distinguish colleges and universities. College usually smaller than a university. Most of their student focusing on practicing real hands works. But a university is much complicated. The students in universities have to learn more about the theory and do a lot of researching. They usually become senior engineer, researcher, designer, university teachers and so on.
