Do you have self-promotion issues?

Do you have a problem promoting your product, service, idea, or self? Do you have issues with those who do so, especially when done with a "look at mememe" mentality?
I have no problem promoting my own products or ideas, but promoting self might be an issue. I'm more comfortable with and proud of my "stuff" than I am with my "self".
And I've little use for those who constantly shout, in one way or another, "Look at me!" or "Look what I can do for you!" I'm more of an "Here's what we can do for each other." kind of gal.
I look at self-promotion as a positive thing when done from the direction of sharing with others more for an idea exchange that is beneficial to both, as opposed to shamelessly cramming me and my stuff down another's throat.
So how about you? How do you feel about self-promotion?

I so agree with you about the one-on-one factor being much more comfortable. Now, when you take those lessons from your friend, you will pass the learning along, right?

I'm not really great about putting myself out there. I'm the one in the back of the room when everybody else is shmoozing and shaking hands. But I'm going to be publishing some novels online this year, so I'm slowly building my "platform." Mostly, I'm doing it by blogging about writing, and by serializing a couple of my novels on one of my blogs. For me, social networking is something that should help others as well as myself. I participate on a couple of forums, leave comments on other people's blog, and try to promote the writing of people I admire. Recently, about half a dozen posts on my writing blog have been spammed by the same person. The comment is okay, but it's exactly the same one on every post, and they're promoting a site where they're selling stuff. Luckily, Wordpress holds that kind of comment instead of publishing it, and I'm able to delete them without anyone ever seeing them. That's the kind of self-promotion I hate.

Perfect example, thank you! As far as I see, you're going about it the right way. You're utilizing the networking from the perspective of getting yourself out there, yet promoting others, which in my opionion promotes you and your product.
Bravo on the novels! I do hope to hear more! I have a book blog and would love to connect with you: Ruthi Reads! at http://ruthireads.blogspot.com

Catana, do stop by my blog from time to time! I do a weekly hop from my blog and would love to have you hop right in. It's called WoW 100 Weekly Words...sharing 100 words from whatever you're currently reading. Even though it's a Wednesday hop, you can hop in anytime and link up, so hope to see you hop along!
As for your writing... I'm an eclectic reader, enJOY diversity, so I look forward to published versions, too!
You got my main "mememe" point! It is the worst form of self-promotion, for sure. Nothing turns me away from even caring about what someone has to sell when all they are doing is selling. It can be so much more effective to soft sell, in my opinion.

Thank you. I've bookmarked your blog. Though I'm not sure you'd enjoy my novels. They're pretty dark. Not horror or suspense. They usually involve slavery or some kind of power imbalance between people, and try to get into the heads of the characters.
I like what jillhill said earlier, about one on one connections. I've met a lot of wonderful people by writing about writing, and by serializing my stories. A couple have become online friends. Some of my readers are waiting for the revised and edited version of the stories to be published. I can't imagine any of that happening if I'd been spamming or even just saying "me, me, me" all the time.

I know exactly how you feel! Funny thing, though, I've always felt deep down that if we can sell our selves, the products would sell themselves.

I do not promote much, but have no problem with others. At this point I do not have anything that I need to promote. I think there is a difference in being focused on self and on helping others. That is why I have enjoyed the interactions here on MyLot and other places.

Good for you that you have no problems either way! Yes, there is a difference in focus. However, when one does have something to promote, I feel it can be done in a friendly, non-intrusive way, basically with the focus on self and others at the same time.

I'm not sure....I'm not a salesperson (and you probably already figured that out)
I'm working on getting the word out about the things that I make....it's because, quite honestly, I truly need the money.
However, I refuse to do what some do, which is blantantly make posts saying "please visit my store and buy something because of this or that reason that I need the money for"
I truly want someone to order from me because they like what I make.
You are a great person in the way that you help others out...

Marsha, I actually enJOY the way you promote your products! You share them, show them, go into the steps of work from start to finish, and so forth. You show us what you've got without pouncing on us, involving us in the pleasure of your creations.
I so agree with you on the "begging"! We all are pretty much selling our creations because we need the money for something. No need to beg us to buy with your latest tale of woe. If we spend time getting to know one another, truly networking, we already know the financial issues involved.
And yes, agreed again, purchase because you truly like the product.
And, m'dear friend, you are an inspiration to me, as well as to others, I've no doubt.

Promoting myself is not really part of my personality. But I have learned to do it a little bit. I work in a corporate type of environment and we appraisals done regularly. I've learned in the past that if I didn't toot my own horn, it affects my compensation potentials. So, I don't do it regularly, but I document any self promotions that I have, and I let it all out come evaluation time.

You are so right about the effect our self portrayal has in the work environment. I like that idea of documenting, storing it up for evaluation time! Also gave me a thought of documenting in order to look back to see what was effective and what was not so.

I really do think that I have a hard time promoting my stuff and promoting myself. The reason that I feel that way is because I am a person that has a lack of self confidence. I'm a naturally shy person and that is the reason that I tend to not want people to pay attention to me. I think that I would be in very good shape if I was ever able to overcome the fact that I really am a painfully shy person. Shyness and self promotion really don't go together well.

Believe you me, I know all about that lack of self confidence issue! Sometimes the world of pretend works to alleviate it, though..:-) And the neat thing is, you can promote your friends and believe me, when you shine the light on them it shines right back on you and you don't even realize you're in the spotlight!

dorannmwin, the nice thing about the internet is that if you're shy, you don't have to deal with people on a face to face basis. It helps to keep in mind that's it's not really yourself you're promoting in the long run, though that's how we express it. As a writer, it's my writing that I hope will attract people. I keep in mind how much I've enjoyed writing, and how the characters have come to life for me, and I want people to enjoy the end product. Yes, I also want to sell my books, but if I wasn't passionate about my writing, I couldn't do it. And I certainly wouldn't be able to put it out there for people to read.

If you can promote your stuff, then you can promote yourself too! Look, that thing is like a package without the other, it won't move further. In a workplace is like a "jungle", so be aware always with your steps going to the top. Be smart and brainy in dealing with your peers and bosses. do what is required of you, and exert more effort to show them that you can. Work harder than usual and you'll see the results. Don't bother yourself to think of others, when it comes to promotion in a job. Work is work, and outside your work, that's the time to intermingle with them, but be very careful of your image. to promote yourself in the job, use your unique attributes and show that you've got talent and other character of being the one. Don't boast but show with etiquette and flair. prove to them that you care for them, in fact that's your way in surviving the jungle.

WoW! Excellent advice! Spoken like a true leader. I really liked this comment of yours: Look, that thing is like a package without the other, it won't move further. I'll remember that advice ... thank you!
