Does the media have our society under their control?

Whether we realize it or not, the media have an enormous amount of control over our society. There is almost no escaping it - everywhere we go, the media is there to shape our lives in one way or another.
Take the news media for example - the news that we listen to every morning and night tells us what they feel is important for us to hear, not completely providing us with the most pressing issues in our society. What the news media chooses to ignore is viewed as unimportant to the majority of our society because we are left uneducated and are therefore blind to many problems within the country.
Advertisements in the media have also shaped our society in many ways. What we wear, what we eat, how we dress, and how we act is determined by what we see and read in the media. For example, we are convinced that we need to fit in with famous models, actors, and singers by wearing the style of clothing we see them in through the media.
It is argued that individuals have a choice to buy into the information we are so often provided with from the media. I disagree with this argument because the majority of our society has already been influenced by the media, so those who ignore the media directly are still shaped by society all around them.
To what extent do you think our media has control over our society?

I totally agree with you. Even if we try not to get influenced with what the media says, the people around us still influence us or else you could be considered an outcast or something. From the way the government runs a particular country to what a family will have for dinner, the influence of media is somewhat in there, directly or indirectly affecting all of us. The truth is, even if we don't watch any television, we are somehow a part of a society that is built, influenced and run by what the media says. This we need to accept and that's why I think that the media should be very careful with what they have to show us.

The media has become so much a part of our lives that it influences almost every aspect of it. For example, the way we look and how we perceive beauty. Court cases are decided by the media as well as laws. There is probably no segment in our society that is not influenced by the media.

The media certainly has an element of control in today's society but I still believe it each persons choice to choose whether they buy into the media or not yes we may be influence to some degree by it throughout our lives but aren't we always going to be influenced by things which are constant in our lives such as our parents which is something I don't mind being influenced by as they've done well in there lives which is the main thing I wish to achieve in my lives. So not all of the media's control rather influence can be a bad thing and there's no way to stop them experting this control other than to completely ban all types of media which just isn't possible in anyway. I personally don't buy into all types of media and know that there are things they don't tell us and tend to hide some home truths from society.
