Optimistic is a good attitude, but if one is excessively optimistic, then it may turn to bighead. If you always be close with such kind of friends, you may become blindly optimistic about life, and you may underestimate the difficulties, once you meet with difficulties, you may easily give up. Of course to be pessimistic is not good, but sometimes a bit of it will remind you of the reality. The most ideal situation is let these two kind of person influence each other.

While being incredulous can be a hearty way to avoid getting taken advantage of, being pessimistic - that is, always assuming the worst - can have major negative consequences on your life. Seeing only the bad aspects of any situation can cause you to miss opportunities, neglect problems that need to be solved, and fail to take action that would otherwise improve your relationships and quality of life. Optimists look for the light at the end of the tunnel. If you've always had a pessimistic worldview, it can be difficult to shift your focus, but it is possible to start seeing the glass as half full, not half empty.

"An optimist is a person who sees a green light everywhere, while the pessimist sees only the red stoplight. The truly wise person is colorblind." -Albert Schweitzer
I want my friends to be "colorblind". I don't think that having an optimistic friend increases the chances of one's success. If someone is over-confident, their attitude can actually work against them. They may not try as hard, or underestimate an opponent or obstacle, etc.
However, having a negative person around all the time will just increase anxiety and other negative feelings, which is never fun, but also clouds our judgment.
I believe that we should see things as they are. If we can't see both the good and the bad, then we aren't going to be able to make as good decisions. Attaching too much of a certain emotional energy with things gives us a bias and therefore makes see things differently.
