It is a popular version of Linux, because it is probably easier to install for a Windows user. I am using Gentoo, a Linux compiled from sources ; Ubuntu use pre-compiled packages and is more vulnerable. It has also a lot of dependencies, and a crash with Ubuntu is really a bad crash...
It is a good Linux for a beginner, but if you are really interested by Linux, you will soon install a better one : Open Suse, CentOS, Mandriva...

i think if you want a linux os for private use ubuntu cna be the right solution..in reality on this os you can find all you need for almost everything and you can laso install free softwares from the software center without browsing too much finding a right open software for your disribution...so it is smple, user friendly and really smart!!I like ubuntu as linux os..

Ubuntu Linux is an open source Operating system with some great programming features. Ubuntu itself is great for advanced users who are familiar with programming languages and Linux commands. But for general users Windows 7 is good for use.
