Hi mylotters, while traveling do you prefer staying in budget hotel or hostel or staying in comfortable lavish hotel? I prefer staying in budget hotel since I usually travel alone or by myself and I only stay in the room for few hours for sleeping. The rest of the day I usually walk around the city, which is why I feel it is not worth it to spend money for staying in four or five stars hotel. Staying in budget hotel or hostel also offers me the chance to know other visitors as well since usually there are lounge or restaurant to relax and backpackers are more friendly than people staying in hotels. We can even end up traveling together. So, which one do you prefer?

I usually stay in a budget or backpacker's hotel. I don't mind as long as it is clean and the bathrooms are clean. You are right in saying that we only spend a few hours in the room when we travel so we don't need those lavish hotels. We can spend the extra money we save from budget hotels to do more tours of the city. And you are right backpacker's hotel offers the chance for you to mingle with other guests and have fun sharing your stories with your fellow travelers. Though in some instances, I book myself in 4 or 5 star hotels. My work requires me to do so, so I will have a good review of the hotels at both end of the spectrum.

Yup, I only book 4 or 5 stay hotels if it is for business travelling and my office paid for it, otherwise I would choose to stay in cheap hotels. I usually go spending a lot in tours and food, it always fun to try tasting local foods. Thanks for the response doggydimon

We usually stay in a budget hotel or somewhere in between. Something like a super 8 or a Day's Inn. We've stayed at others that were more expensive but not any nicer then the cheaper ones. I don't understand how they can charge so much for a room when all you do it sleep there. I can see the rooms that offer a refrigerator and a microwave and more things like that costing more but for just a basic room and they still charge $100 or more, its ridiculous. I prefer to stay in my inlaws motorhome that they let us use. They bought a second one for all their kids to use. We can stay in nice campgrounds at half the cost and have our own little place.

Yeah, I understand these hotels can charge you like crazy, but some hotels are actually really has excellent service and provide various things to do inside. Mainly, they charge very expensive because of the location are very strategic, close to shopping center, business area and the tourist spots or the rooms have breathtaking views from the room. Sometimes the experience exploring the hotels itself can be very interesting, I really want to go to Vegas because of the large casinos and various entertainment shows and concerts they have.

Hey there sophisticated_boy, I usually stay in a budget hotel when I travel alone or when I travel on my work. But when I travell with my family, I usually stay in a good hotel, not a four or five star, but a decent hotel, with a good bed, toilet and a good restaurant.I always look for a hotel with sufficient parking space, so that I can park my vehicicle.

Hi, if I am with my family, especially my parents I also usually try to find a decent hotel, not four or five stars but two stars is enough. I don't need parking space though, as we usually go by tour or by public transportation. It's usually cheaper by doing that :)

When I travel I like to stay in a mid-range hotel. one that is not too expensive nor one that is too cheap. I feel a mid range hotel will have good rooms and good service as to where a cheap one would not. but I do not desire to stay in one that is lavish becasue I can't afford it and I would be paying for a lot of stuff I couldn't use.

Same like you, it is very rare I use the facilities inside the hotel, all I do all day are just hop from one places in the city and another and go to the hotel just to take a rest.

It depends on whether I'm going to spend a lot of time hanging in he hotel (like I'm having romantic, stay in bed all weekend weekends) or if I'm going a conference or to site see or whatever. I want a cool room for event 1; otherwise I could care less about the sort of hotel room I'm in.

In my younger days I traveled on my own so was happy to stay in a dorm in a youth hostel. I stayed in independent backpackers hostels too. Sometimes I camped in my own tent. I liked staying in a private room when I got that opportunity.
Nowadays I travel with my disabled three year old son and my twenty month old daughter. We like to stay in locally owned guest houses that are not too expensive. I love it when we can stay in unusual accommodation. The year before my disabled son was born I stayed in a thatched tree house in Belize and a little beach hut in Mexico. Years ago I stayed on a flat roof in Jordan.
I like to get the chance to meet the local people and low budget travelers. I stayed at a hotel and two cheap guest houses on my trip that I have just got back from. went to Cartagena De Indias and Santa Marta in Colombia.

I have stayed in many different kinds of hotels (budget hotels, medium hotels and expensive hotels) and I have stayed in hostels. I usually prefer to find a relatively cheap form of accomodation like a hostel or a budget hotel. I don't spend that much time at the hotel anyway, so that there is no need to pay for a very expensive and luxurious hotel. I prefer to spend the money on sightseeing instead. Sometimes I don't book a hotelroom in advance and if I am not able to find a cheap room when I arrive I sometimes stay in a hotel which is more expensive.

When our family travels, we will typically stay in a budget priced hotel because we really don't have a lot of money to spend on hotel rooms. In addition to that, we also don't tend to spend a lot of time in the hotel room so there is really no purpose in our family wasting a lot of money in order to have all the bells and whistles in our hotel room. However, there have been times that other people pay for our hotel rooms and in those situations, we tend to have nicer hotel rooms for our travels.

I like your idea to stay in budget hotel, or hostels. I don't have much money of my own, and I prefer to stay in someplace where I can save a lot of money. And one thing you mentioned is right too. Those backpackers are much nicer than other people who stay in those high - level hotels. I would prefer to know one or two friends along the trip.

Like you, I prefer to stay in a budget hotel as long as it is clean and have hot shower. My decision is based on money wise, so I can spend more to explore the town or the city. I like to visit local village and interact with local people, that way I can learn about their culture in one go.
