Have you nothing else on this location as in country maybe even what era? Where did you read the poem? This could be a hard one to narrow down. Can you even remember if it was a widely known poem or by popular author? Anything more would be helpful to track down the poem.

i think it was one of the world wars but i have no idea who the author was it has been years since i read the poem i think the first time i read it was in high school grade 10 or 11 so i think it might have been a popular poem i dont have vary high hopes of finding it. a year ago i started to look for it but there was hundreds of poems on the war poem website i was looking at i was on it for at leas 3 hours. any help you can give me would be nice to point me in a direction to search

Yeah the fact you read it in school suggests it would be more likely a popular author I don't think I know it personally but I'll keep an eye out I'm doing a creative writing course maybe it will pop up there I'll keep you posted. I did a search myself and found quite a few poems on similar things to you described but no world wars as of yet. I found a song I like though through looking for your poem about a soldier who saved some people from a grenade, strange how creative pieces can repeat themselves it's based on a true event in Ireland during the troubles.
