How Bad Are Drivers Where You Live?

I haven't done a lot of traveling in my life, but from the little that I have done I think that New York drivers are probably the worst. Don't get me wrong, I'm a born New Yorker and I could not imagine living anywhere else, but when traveling to other states I have seen and heard of drivers from some other states they seem to have more consideration and patience when driving. For example, in some states it's considered rude to honk your horn unless you're in a certain situation. In New York people honk simply because someone isn't fast enough for them and people cut lanes and speed a lot. When my best friend moved from New York to Georgia and used to come back to visit her mother always complained of having headaches when she was driving because of the roads and honking.
How are drivers where you live? If you're from another state in the United States and you've visited New York do you agree with my statements? Have you noticed a difference in drivers and driving "etiquette"? If you aren't a driver, are you afraid because of the things I've mentioned? I'm interested to learn about the subtle differences that may exist in driving "etiquette" and behavior from other countries as well.
Happy myLotting!

I think you may be right about New York drivers being the worst in the country.
I've traveled a bit myself and, quite honestly, I NEVER want to drive in New York again!
I grew up in Maryland and thought that the drivers there were bad enough but, geez! New York's got Maryland beat in the driving etiquette department, or I should say LACK of etiquette department.
Still, Maryland is pretty bad as far as inconsiderate drivers goes. The worst there, I'd say, has to be the tailgaters. I honestly don't understand the mentality of those who climb up on your butt and think that's going to get them "there" any faster, especially when all traffic is moving about the same speed in every lane.
My ex had to tailgate whenever he was driving. His reason I understood... he was terribly insecure. He couldn't stand it when anyone would cut in front of him. He took that as a personal insult to his masculinity or something.
I live in Virginia now. The drivers here, typically speaking, are the nicest I've encountered anywhere. If I'm driving down a rural road and a car passes, the driver generally smiles and waves. That's how the majority of drivers here are... exceptionally friendly and considerate.
Still, there are the speeders, tailgaters, lane weavers, those who think that they are more important than anyone else on the road. There just aren't nearly as many here, on average, as in other states.
I'd LOVE to see the day when DMV (or MVA as in Maryland) makes us all have to take all the tests over each time our license expires. It would at least make every insane driver re-read and re-learn all the rules of the road.

Yea, it's pretty scary. I visited Maryland before with family and it didn't seem that bad, but I guess that's because I was only there for a little while so I didn't get the full experience.
Of course there's always a mix everywhere. We also have our share of careful drivers, but I guess it's more scary and dangerous because of the volume of traffic on the road. I noticed in other states that it isn't as congested as it is here.
New Yorkers are pretty unfriendly, myself included lol. But I remember when I was little my best friend and I could sit at the back of her dad's jeep and wave at drivers behind us. I've noticed in other states that people are super friendly and are always greeting, smiling, and waving. It's nice. You don't get that much here. People will just think you're weird if you talk to them and you don't know them, or get scared :P
LOL at the comment about your ex.
Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

I live in Ohio. Actually in a very small town with horse pulled buggies are the norm. There's no honking here, unless someone is about to have an accident. I've often wondered if the drives in New York were as bad as the TV shows make them out to be. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I don't think I'll be driving in NY anytime soon.

Wow horse pulled buggies. That actually sounds nice, like it's calm and quiet where you live.
I would think that horns are meant for emergencies like a warning someone gives when they are about to have an accident. Here it also means "hurry up!" lol

A reckless driver around the corner is a threat to dwellers . He would not care a little for those humble pedestrians nor does he take into account the right of other motorists in the streets.

In the city where I live, it seems that there are a lot more bad drivers than good ones. I might be wrong, but from what I've seen, this does seem to be the case. It seems to be worse here, than in other places that I've visited. I definitely do not feel very comfortable driving here.

i have read and saw on tv that new york drivers are one of the worst but i don't think there would be anyone much worst than the drivers here in the Philippines! Jesus christ!!! I know I shouldn't be bad mouthing my fellow filipinos but....Lord Almighty!!! They really are the worst!....they make devils out of anyone they encounter!...Public utility drivers or private vehicle drivers.. They are all the same! They are undisciplined, risk takers, aggressive, selfish, confrontational!!! Its like everyday that you are commuting its like you're one foot is in the grave(like preggy moms!! heheh)Big buses would race each other, would swerve like they're on a racing track! Sigh..... and the the list continues on....Its like here in the philippines the only requirement to have a license here would be a set of hands and a set of feet and Walah! you are ready to go.....

Drivers are very rough especially bus drivers they think that the roads were made for them only, they do overtake at every corner without adhering to the traffic rules, they over speed causing numerous accidents, they hoot all the time making noises to the passengers, one only prays that they reach to there destination when they are safe..drivers luck courtesy and they talk bad to other motorists and this is when i say i wish i were traffic police, there would be no vehicles on the road because i would have arrested alot of drivers..Drivers should also learn to respect the pedestrians without spilling water on them when it rains.

There are times I think that some people get their drivers' licenses from a prize in a cereal box. They can really get out of control sometimes. Children on bicycles have better driving and road etiquette than a lot of people I come in contact with on the highways.

Hi dear,
I think drivers are of two types. One belongs to the driver of the self car or vehicle where as the second being just driver (rented or hired) ones. In my observation, self driving also again belongs to different attitudes. Most of them will drive carefully where as the later, youngsters and crazy people never bothered of anything. Once they are in the road, they have a feel that they are in a race and to be finished the race in any way. They are the most dangerous ones and they never care of who all are on the road opposite or side by. They just will concentrate on their way an nothing more.
In our place, most of the public roads are so crowded with vehicles and racing is impossible. Also, many are much careful and cautious because there were restrictions and controls by traffic polices. Still, wherever we go, there may be certain percentage of people who were good for nothing and belongs to the worst category. So that is an exception and if we don’t care about them, it is good otherwise. They are the main peoples causing for major road accidents.
I am really scared to travel on the speedy high ways because any expert driver also can be expect a unseen up normality, if the other person is careless.
Thank-s

Indian Highways are the best examples of rude driving, we can see a lot of accidents every day. Especially truck drivers who have there targets to reach the destinations on time. Drive slowly and drive safely.

well, i live in southern florida, and we have alot of southern folk here, so we see lots of trucks of all kind- old, new, dirty, clean, mud splattered,-speeding down the road and throwing trash out of the window. Those of us that arent driving trucks are usually pretty safe drivers on the other hand. I guess in a wrap up, we have a mixed amount of crazy and safe drivers.
