I had observed that countries where there is snow are more progressive than countries in the temperate zone except in countries where there is oil. I know snow can really be a terrible thing but I think it keeps people more disciplined and makes them more prepared, am I right thinking about this? In my country people just seem to take things for granted, you know , build a shanty or an informal colony where ever they want even on other peoples property or vacant lots simply because they do not fear freezing to death? What's your take? think the snow contributed to your progress?

I once made this observation too and my conclusion was that it wasn't about the weather. You might call it coincidence or faith but it all has to do with a little of history. Countries centuries that were involve in constant war and conquest usually end up being develop because competition and the fight for survival bring ingenuity. lets take Europe for example. After the roman empire collapse, a bunch kingdom start popping up. These kingdom usually fight against each other and you will see how development happen. If you go further back in interest, you'll see how steal was develop by the romans to defeat the iron use by the Greeks. Over on to north america which has a cold/temperate climate, Indians that once live there wasn't as advance as the Europeans that came there. This was mainly due to that back the conflict between tribes were usually skirmishes and not some large scale war. After the Europe settle and America was form, it had couple major war. The fight for independence and a civil war. During this cannons became more advance and stable upon fire and the riffling concept and technology was develop. These area of the world went forward and the left everyone behind. Its just like in the two world wars that cause the development of the tank, computer and during the cold war internet and GPS. History has a lot of answers to a lot of questions.

So nice for somebody who has quite a knowledge of world history to respond, I understand exactly what you mean cause I was raised by an old maid aunt who was a teacher in history and geography from one of the finest University in our country. Yes progress came at a great cost of conquest, killings, explorations , trial and errors, World wars and so many factors within the course of the history of mankind.

I think that snow makes us more aware of our lot. We have to work double time when we know that there is a factor like snow that is beyond our control. Not like in tropical countries wherein we could just let it past and wait for another day.

I agree with you, some Filipinos seem to take things for granted because the weather is most of the time fine the whole year round, no preparations, just have fun, sleep, party and attend fiestas, procrastinate, then we wake up to find out that we are already lagging behind

Same observation here. But i think in reality it does not have to do with the weather, nor with the location. It has to do with so many factors.

Yes, and I wonder why so many of our countrymen still insist on building shanties and informal settlements on esteros and other waterways when they know very well they and their families could get washed out during the typhoon season, they are still lucky lakes and rivers do not freeze here, might shake some of their brains to rethink

I think is some respects you may correct in your assumption. But where I live we can have considerable amounts of snow at different times. It's not usually here for the entire winter or anything. But I just drove home from my parent's house and was surprised to see how many people are living. And we are going to get ice and snow tomorrow night! They seem to live in substandard dwellings. So I am not sure it is an all or nothing supposition!

Singapore is awesome :D, though its been raining for 3 days straight and it just stopped, snow probably won't help us.

Singapore is already progressive, for sure it's not because of the rain and snow is no longer needed, I admire your country especially the discipline
Yeah, we people in Southeast Asia seem to be getting more than our share of rainfall these days, I wonder why?

I don't think that, maybe this is only an excuse that the people make to justify the things that they don't do. I'm really sure the snow doesn't affect hahahahaha.

hi again lost response I think that a lot more than snow factros ibn to making a coungry progressive or not, like education the more education is available to all people in a country the more progressive the country is
right now in one of the richest countries in the world US A has horribvle economy through a lot of states with jobs completely outnumbered by the thousands of people here out of work. it has affectd stores and other business places as if they cannot sell thier goods as people are short of money they will have to close shop. we are a progressive country and also have some states with snow but I doubt our snow has much to do with our progressiveness.I was hardy coming from horribly cold winters to where I live now Californis where its much warmer.

Yes Maam, so as in my other post about the train culture, I understand your basic stand is on collective effort by citizens to make a country great, am I right? Thank you so much for sharing especially from some one who has so much experience and had seen them all unfold

I think it comes from experience basically as since it is always expected we know what to do for next year and be prepared. Where as a place who has never experienced it would be a shock and less probability of quickly getting over something they have never had before. I think..

Yes so in a way it alters people's behavior towards preparedness, imagine exercising the same routine for thousands of years so I guess it could have contributed in some way towards progress.

I don't think so, but I think it has more to do with the location. For example Hong-Kong and Singapore doesn't have snow, but their place in the planet is ideal for trading. And so they have a good economy.

but the Philippines is also a good location, that's why Spain made it the queen colony, it controlled shipping in the far east, even the Americans thought the same so they had to retake it at all costs during WWII, well Hong-Kong and Singapore are good exceptions because they are small and easy to manage (Singapore only being the size of Subic). I'm talking about the general, countries with snow are just more progressive, we can even count them with our fingers
